An antique sled with amazing powers has taken Emily and Matt across the continent and all through time. They’ve come face to face with pirates, prospectors, the Vikings, and even dinosaurs. Now, in the seventh title in the Canadian Flyer Adventures series, they’re off on their most important journey yet — helping along the Underground Railroad, where they meet Harriet Tubman and Dr. Alexander Ross. A special section at the back of the book gives readers additional facts about the abolition movement.
This book is about Emeli and her adventure with her aunt. I like this book because I like the part that the aunt of Emelia leaves a letter that seeing the sleigh that is what Emeli loves. I give this book 5 stars.
"Hurry, Freedom" is a great book for 2nd-5th grade students to read in order for them to understand some of the struggles that people had to go through during the time of the Underground Railroad. This book is one in a series that follows a girl, Emily, and her friend, Matt, as they travel through time on a magic sled. This particular adventure submerges them in the Underground Railroad, and teaches them that it isn’t about a fun train ride. They meet characters along the way, such as Harriet Tubman, that show them how to be brave in the midst of trials and how to fight for what’s right. I recommend incorporating this book into your classroom to teach your students about some of the hardships that were faced in the Underground Railroad, through a gentle historical fictional story.
Emily Bing and Matt Martinez find an old Canadian Flyer sled in the tower of Emily's house. There is a note from Emily's Great Aunt instructing them to fly to great adventures. Pulling out the sled, there is an inscription on the front on how to operate the sled. In an old dresser is an array of unique objects. Each one will lead to its own adventure.
HURRY, FREEDOM gives the children a first-hand account of the Underground Railroad. Matt wants to take a train ride, and when they find a feather in the dresser with a note attached saying Underground Railroad, of course children will assume it's a train ride. So after reading the magic inscription on the sled, they're off.
Emily and Matt find themselves in upstate New York in 1958, in a doorless basement room. Matt figures out the secret exit, and soon, they are outside the building meeting Dr. Ross and his hidden group of runaway slaves.
Emily and Matt spend a fearful night trying to get the slaves Sarah, Lucy, Elijah, and Sam across the border into Canada. Slave catchers and barking dogs are on their tail and hinder their attempt to cross a bridge into Canada. Alternative plans have to be followed, which are more dangerous than crossing the bridge.
HURRY, FREEDOM is the 7th book in the CANADIAN FLYERS ADVENTURES series by Frieda Wishinsky. HURRY, FREEDOM was highly educational for young readers. The book is appropriate for anyone that is able to read easy chapter books. For fans of the MAGIC TREEHOUSE series, this one is just as entertaining. An added twist is that the two main characters are from Canada. HURRY, FREEDOM was a fast-paced story that draws the reader into the fear and tension that existed during the era of slaves and their quest for freedom.

Fans of the Magic Treehouse books will love these fast paced, easy to read adventure stories. In the seventh book, Matt and Emily ride their sled back to the underground railroad. They learn how slaves were being mistreated and help their new friends hide from the slave hunters. With the help of Harriet Tubman and Dr. Ross they cross the river during a storm.
The plot of this story moves along quickly, but it has a nice clean well developed plot. This is definitely one of the better books in the set.
The educational highlights of this book, as in all of the series are Emily and Matt’s Top Ten Facts and the author’s note section. These brief lists build on the information the story covers.
