Surrounded by water, Copenhagen is a well-loved destination for travelers, but it is also a very popular place to live among Danes. This new city guide has something to offer both, taking in overlooked and inconspicuous places that lie outside the usual mainstream attention.

Jan Gralle and Vibe Skytte present an alternative vision of their city, opening up insights to special and forgotten places. Many of the locations described in the book are outside, which is largely down to the Copenhageners love of spending time outdoors. As soon as the sun peaks out from behind the clouds, everyone flocks to the harbor, to the water, onto the many enchanting squares and the numerous street cafés. This book is an invitation to both locals and visitors to drift, to explore the city from new perspectives and allow themselves to be seduced by its variety and its charm.

This is a guide book to Copenhagen. The title directly translated from Danish is '111 places in Copenhagen you MUST see'. I have a problem with this title, because it makes the book sound like a definitive guide. It indirectly promises the readers that if they see these 111 places, they will have experienced the best of what Copenhagen has to offer. Let me make it perfectly clear that this is not the case!

The point of the book is to be an alternative to traditional guidebooks about Copenhagen. As such this book describes the more obscure and unknown sights of the city, leaving out entirely the wellknown and popular sights.

The audience for this book is not those who are only in Copenhagen for a short period of time. Because it makes no sense at all to forgo places like Tivoli and Nyhavn (as described in traditional guidebooks) in order to ride the F-train or see a bicycle bridge (as described in this guidebook)!

The book should be read as a supplement, not an alternative, to more traditional guidebooks about Copenhagen.

If you live in the city (or visit regularly) and want to experience it in a new way, this book might be for you.

If you have done the 'Tivoli and Nyhavn thing' to death and want inspiration for some new sights, this book might be for you.

For everyone else, I would not recommend it.

Update: I saw the English version of this book in a bookstore today. The title had been translated into '111 things you shouldn't miss in Copenhagen.' Clever translation. I like the English title much better than the Danish.

I was thinking about spending a few days in Copenhagen this August. However, after looking through this book I really didn't see much that would interest me. I also thought several of the suggested things to do were kind of unusual and maybe its just a cultural thing but watching planes take off and land doesn't sound like something that should be in a travel book. 😂
