Viz is a British adult comic magazine founded in 1979 by Chris Donald. It parodies British comics of the post-war period, notably The Beano and The Dandy, but with extensive profanity, toilet humour, black comedy, surreal humour and generally sexual or violent storylines. It also sends up tabloid newspapers, with mockeries of articles and letters pages.
What can I say about Viz that has not been said before, we all know its Geordie smut. I remember back in 1980s when the original creative writing team was at shop in Newcastle Upon Tyne called Timeslip so Called after ITV SF TV show children 's series from 1971-72 they launched Viz there. This has The Fat Slags which is based on Shiely Doggers -South Shield female working class girls from 1950s, Mr Logic , 8 Ace, Sid The Sexist,Biffa Bacon, Roger Mellie the man on the telly,to loads of other favourites.
There are flashes of brilliance in this, and I laughed long and hard at some of the newer ideas. Letterbocks is a high point as usual and the text-heavy sexploit exposes are the nadir (although these are more varied and better than previously - I even laughed out loud at Bin There, Done That). However, the addition of see-what-you-can-spot poster pages, i.e. in the 1970s school, are very amusing and encourage you to take the time to consider the drawings with the care they deserve. Single panel cartoons are frequently very funny (The Railway Children one is a corker). Even a Fat Slags strip (the one with the advent calendar) is funny, which is a rarity. And, of course, every Major Misunderstanding or Mr Logic strip is golden. Finally, Pest Force Alaska says in two pages of art what 1000s of words would be needed to say about mindless American TV show design and, by extension, the slow death of our civilisation.
Long time reader of Viz, although not as regularly these days. Got this compilation for Christmas, slowly been working through it. Biffa Bacon, Roger Mellie, Sid all not bad - best thing is still the letters page.
