Wall Street Journal & USA Today bestselling author Emma Slate writes romance with heart and heat.
Called “the dialogue queen” by her college playwriting professor, Emma writes love stories that range from romance-for-your-pants to action-flicks-for-chicks.
When she isn’t writing, she’s usually curled up under a heating blanket with a steamy romance novel and her two beagles—unless her outdoorsy husband can convince her to go on a hike.
Looking for true suspense? A completely vivid and detailed fantasy? Are you looking for a story that slowly builds to a crescendo so sharp that it will leave your heart pounding, your chest feeling constricted as though every breath were being wrenched from your body? Look no further -This is it - I do not know what else to say - I honestly am in awe right now! Hands down one of the best fantasy reads I have ever had the pleasure of reading. This ends on a cliffhanger by the way! I might add this was actually my reaction after reading the last scene- and yes I was yelling : No! I am serious take me back - Now! You can not leave me hanging by a silk thread! I received a free copy of this book and chose to leave a voluntary review
This is the first book I’ve read from Emma, but it won’t be the last! I’m a big fan of Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson, Poppy reminds me a lot of Mercy. These characters are well thought out, she reveals just enough about them to keep you intrigued, I finished it in one sitting, even though I had things I should have been doing instead! I signed up for her newsletter so I won’t miss anything! Highly recommend!
This story is intense, suspenseful and captivating. I loved this book but hated the cliffhanger ending. The characters are great and the story line pulls you in. It is so good you not nth to stop reading until the end. I would definitely recommend this book! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. This is my honest opinion
I wasn't sure what to expect when reading a book about a girl liking spiders. But I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's not your usual girl torn between two lovers. Poppy endures thinking she is losing her mind but events happen that test her beliefs. Hunter and Thane add to her confusion . Can't wait for the next book .
This is a solid 4.5 stars, it grabbed me and held me from start to finish. The plot is pretty complex and there are many twists and turns for poor Poppy along the way. She has some tough decisions to make and there are times when she seems to be being pushed in directions against her will. The book ends on a cliffhanger that IMOP has you grabbing for the next book.
I've been hearing about The Spider Queen for a while and I was so disappointed that it wasn't available - then it was!! And I'm SO glad that I got a chance to read it! It's an amazing story! It stirs up the whole spectrum of emotions!Thank you for your time, talent AND THE STORY!
I was hooked from page one. This story was so different from any I've read and I loved it. Spiders, magic, torn between two loves, selfless sacrifice, heartache, sadness and joy. What an emotional rollercoaster ride. I couldn't stop reading until I finished it. Excellent story and awesome writing.
There is so much i could say about the spider queen. Scifi meets romance! Emma really has a talant ro be able to write the way she does. I strongly reccomend this book you willnot be disappointed
I could not put this book down. Emma Slate has done what I absolutely love. She wrote a book that kept me awake until 2 AM. I absolutely love, love, love this book. The spider queen is definitely one of my favorites.
Emma does it again, with a unique twist on history and myth. I am never less than absorbed into whatever world she weaves. Hope there will be more Thane and Poppy!
First off, it started out slow. Poppy was your average nerdy college girl. Then she met Hunter who was perfect and cagey... I really like the story of Hunter and Poppy. Then it got really good when Poppy was put into the hospital. It was nonstop and action and I was rooting for Hunter so bad.
Then Thane, who also is perfect and the guy we love to hate, comes in and changes the entire book practically. Now we’re talking about Greek mythology, heaven and hell, ancient prophecies. It was much different compared to the spiders and bees fighting.
I honestly thought a lot of parts dragged on way to much. I really liked Hunter and didn’t like the outcome of what happened. Poppy repeated herself a lot about questioning her humanity. It got old. The poppy at the end of the book was completely different compared to the start. Not because of what she’s gone thru, but it felt like a whole new character. I really didn’t see her fall in love with Thane like she did Hunter. I understand their was a pull, but that’s all it was to me was a pull.
The author did an amazing job writing this and I think would have been better either made into a series or shortened to lose some of the extra.
“I’m honored I had your heart, even if it wasn’t going to be forever..”
Where to begin? Did I enjoy "Web of Innocence"? Yes! Very much so. From the beginning, I was drawn in by the vivid depiction of Poppy - the self proclaimed science geek with an unusual interest. I loved that she embraced her differences, and could say "no" when necessary instead of being pushed into things she didn't want or like. She was witty, sarcastic, and funny. The other characters did a good job of better fleshing out Poppy's character with them being too flat and boring. I found the plot to be quite unique, which I appreciate in the current culture of follow the leader. Each turn of events, action, or decision was well outside of convention, keeping readers on their toes and wondering about the next move. I was a bit disappointed by Hunter's character. His characterization felt a bit flat for me, as though he was only a foil to highlight Poppy, rather than a fully realized contribution to the overall story. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would love to read more.
I received an ARC copy of this book, and chose to leave an honest review. (Review also posted on Amazon)
Whoa , talk about crazy. This one's hard for me to rate, and it's not because of the storyline, but maybe because I expected poppy to be different, idk. This story had me gripping my seat, there was so much going on, so much questions that needed answers, and the worse, a love triangle. on one hand I wanted poppy to be with thane, I mean we knew he was tall dark and handsome in her dreams, maybe if he would have explained what he was, I would have rooted for him all the way home. But he didn't, and that left hunter to swoop in. hunter had his issues, but he really seemed to love poppy for her, not because he needed something from her, and although thane says he does care, we really don't see it. his actions speak volumes. This story was very interesting, but we do not find out really much which sucks. And I know many of us really wanted poppy to end up with hunter, I know I did. I'm sad she had to choose thane, I felt like she deserved better
This story is intriguing and definitely kept me glued to its pages ... but at the same time I got incredibly annoyed at Poppy at times. She has trust issues because her dad "abandoned" her and her mom - and so she thinks everyone, especially men, will do the same thing. Why is that? This also has a huge love triangle, where Poppy love two men, one bound by duty and obligation, who loves her and will sacrifice his own life, and the other that just wants to use her and she was told (by a deity) that he would never sacrifice himself.
I like how she is a scientist and doesn't have a great of spiders - but once her emotions and hormones get going there is no logic or reason to be had. So some of the story just seems a bit too ... forced.
Also, this ends on a heck of a cliff hanger, so be prepared to read at least another book to find out what happens.
I thought the book was confusing. Some things like how much time passed in the book and the main characters feelings/opinions were Extremely inconsistent. When did we get the feeling poppy would develop a mental illness? You seemed to pull that out of nowhere. There were absolutely no signs besides her mother being bipolar. Yet all supporting characters acted as if she had been at the breaking point for a long time. Liking spiders doesn't make you crazy. Maybe the sleepwalking but that's it. Also the relationship with Hunter moved way to fast. One date a breakup and a sex scene later they suddenly can't bear to be apart? Just confusing in general. I only finished the book to add it to my list of read books for the year. Don't read it please.
Poppy is more interested in spiders then people. Hunter demands her attention and life is never the same again. A wild sequence of events leads the two on a quest. A mission to save an ancient being named Thane who has his own agenda.
Team Hunter!
I love the originality of this story. I read 70% of it in the first night. I do, however, have mixed feelings about how this story progressed. I mean its crazy. I appreciate the creativity because the chemistry is there. Though, I'm leary about where book 2 will go. I'm going to check it out, of course. So, mission accomplished Ms. Slate.
Ok I don't take drugs but this book was like a psychedelic infused trip. Spiders wasps oh my! A few things in the book was like really, but hey it's a book. It's hard to write a review with a suspense theme because you do not want to give anything away. Hated the ending. Torn between Hunter and thane. Was hunter in love with her or the idea of her? Was thane in love with her because of what she could do for him. Fate and free will?
I really enjoyed the concept of this book and the storyline. I felt for hunter so much though that felt unfair. I felt like the story took a long while to get into though and I did consider stopping reading it a few times but I'm glad I finished it . Definitely different
This story did not disappoint. I started and finished in one night, not being able to put it down. It was written well and the characters had just the right amount of depth. I definitely look forward to the next installment.
It was an amazing book. Really had me enthralled to the point I couldn't put it down. Woo why 3 stars?? Cliffhanger. Ending sucked a d only left Silk many more questions. It's been a while since a book has made me this angry. Not even gonna bother with the second one
I’m not really quite sure how I feel about this book. The idea was pretty well thought out, I had a lot of conflicting thoughts about who the character should end up with and felt disappointed in how quickly the female lead gave up/in. Idk.
I received an ARC for an honest review. I loved the book! Poppy is a college student who studying spiders, which is something different. When she meets Hunter everything just goes crazy. This book is full of drama, suspense, and little of the erotic. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves or doesn't love paranormal romance. The only downfall is I am upset about the ending. I did not like it.
This book had potential in the story line but was just too rushed. Both the story and characters lacked development and were just shallow and lacking any depth. The love aspect was rushed as well and of course we had to make it a triad. Definitely disappointed.
Are you looking for a book that will give your heart interval training? Then yeah, you need to read this book now. The synopsis was eerie and intriguing. When I started to read the book, I found it difficult to put down (I read it in less than nine hours). The author has a way of drawing in the reader and keeping them guessing all the way to the very last sentence. I look forward to reading the next book, but I better plan to set aside nine hours to binge read that beauty. Emma Slate brought back memories of my time reading Gerald's Game by Stephen King. You feel scared but compelled to keep turning the page. A must read.
