Marjorie L. Caygill was a curator who joined the British Museum in 1973 as Research Assistant, Secretariat. Assistant to the Director 1978. Retired October 2004 and 2008 Fellow of the Centre for Anthropology.
This museum basically came to be what it is after many years collecting oddities from here and there, and took many years of just piling things up before it actually made any sense and became tidy. This museum actually ended up creating many more, by taking part of its collection out to others because of space problems, and it's still huge! Quite and interesting story it has.
A very detailed history of this institution, from its founding in the 1753 when it held the distinction of being the first, national and secular museum in the world. To how the items were taken elsewhere for protection during the world wars and to the current era with collections and galleries being made relevant for the digital era.
