One f*cking breath.

That's all I needed.

Air in my lungs so I could exhale through the pain.

My ribs broken, my face in the mud, one leg useless, I tried and failed to lift my head. Mosquitoes swarmed, and the sun dropped. I wasn't gonna die out here. No f*cking way. I was Tarquin Scott, and that was a hard limit. One arm crawl after another, I needed to man up.

I wasn't dead yet.

But then I heard her voice, angel soft and breathless, and I wondered if I'd been kidding myself. I didn't have time to figure it out. A small hand landed on my back and I fisted my bloody knife.

I wasn't gonna die tonight. But someone else was.

How did I not stumble across this book series sooner?! Holy cow. This one ends in a crazy cliffhanger so be warned. I devoured the pages and raced to get the next one.

Targuin has recently escaped from a crazy commune/compound with archaic rules about women and society. I guess saying he “escaped” is generous as they tried to kill him for giving a young woman a flower. He’s been stabbed twice, brutally beaten and left for dead. He has crawled for miles when Shaila finds him.

Shaila is awesome. She’s never been to school, but has managed to pass her GED online. She lives in the swamp with her drug addicted mother and avoids her daddy on the rare occasion he shows up. She’s looked after herself, knows how to kick some ass, shoot, and drive a Harley. Her 18th birthday is coming up and her daddy plans to sell her viriginity to one of his Harley club buddies. Not winning any father of the year awards here.

Targuin is a massive man, (6’4” and all muscle) he was used as a “digger” on the compound and doesn’t read or write. He has no clue how anything works in the real world, he doesn't know how old he is or who his parents are. When he first meets Shaila, they don’t get along AT ALL. He can’t figure out why she doesn’t do what he says. Shaila patches his wounds and the story takes off from there.

Bartel’s way of writing alpha men that I don’t hate is genius. They are strong, stubborn assholes, but there’s an underling kindness and vulnerability that helps offset all that machismo.

This book isn’t sweet, it’s brutal and graphic so you've been warned.

Hot, steamy, intense, a bit dark (with the cult references), interesting style of writing…

Two strong main characters, with an intense and spicy plot, a unique setting, and an unapologetic alpha hero… It was a reading that puts you on a ride of grit, soaked in raw emotionality and relentless intensity. I’m ready for book #2.

Currently putting up past reviews from my Blog on GR because I forgot at the time oops 😅

* This book is part of the Wanted: An Outlaw Anthology along with 19 other full novels that were released January 8th, 2019 as a boxset for charity. It has been released on its own as of December 20th, 2019

Anti-heroes aren't something that I look forward to reading about. Especially considering the part Candle AKA Tarquin plays in a few other novels in this author's other series. His redemption ARC started quite a few books ago and I'm not sure how to feel about him as a character.

Tarquin (who eventually becomes Candle) is different than I imagined him to be with all his future appearances in the other series. He may not be evil, as of yet, but he's not candy canes and gumdrops either. There's a balancing act that the author is trying to hold and I can't say I hate it.

Shaila was sassy and had a backbone when things needed to get done. I imagine she's going to be quite a match for Tarquin in the future. Though why she saved a dying man on her so-called father's land is still beyond me.

With all that being said, this still felt like half a story and not in a good way. The way it ended to give room for a cliffhanger felt way too abrupt and almost panicked. I understand this is going to be a trilogy but there had to be a better for-now ending other than where the author left off.

Genre: Romance - Dark
Standalone: Nope
Part of a Series: Book 1 (of 3) of the Alpha Antihero series
POV: Tarquin and Shaila
Steam Level: Toasty
3/5

Did I mention that I hate cliffhangers? No? I hate cliffhangers! Hate them even more when I'm blindsided by said cliffhanger. You've been warned.

Now that that's out of my system I found this book simultaneously intriguing and annoying. The premise was fun the but accents/stereotypes were over the top. I don't even know what else to say about this book that won't give anything away. On the fence about wanted to see what happens?

Not only was this story way too short, but totally unbelievable. Tarquin has been stabbed in his side and leg. He has bruised ribs and other major injuries but somehow, he can still engage in Donkey-Kong sex 10 minutes after meeting Shaila.
And then to make it even worse, the story ends in a cliffhanger. I'm done!

Well, Ms Bartel writes the most delicious Heroes so it only figures she'd do justice to an anti-Hero.
And WHAT an anti-Hero Tarquin 'Candle' is.
Ms Bartel's loyal readers have seen peeks of the mysterious, scary & intense Candle who manages to keep up with & compete with Andre Luna's security operatives. But that's after Candle becomes an Army Ranger & serves multiple tours overseas.
This novella, 'Hard Limit' gives the reader a tiny taste, a foundation of just what type of forge took Tarquin & created Candle. A hard, unforgiving violent one: a cult where everyone is home schooled per the 'ways' of the leader. Where women are merely vessels for the male cult members lust & to produce future cult members. No actual mothers are known by the children. Mistakes are dealt with immediately, harshly & with finality.
And no one in the compound knows that better than Tarquin.
Yet one innocent kindness by Tarquin results in heinous punishment & he is cast out of the compound into the brutal swampland to die.
But Shaila lives in the swamp & despite her fear, reservations & better judgement she saves the unconscious boy. Hiding him from her drug addled mother & vicious father, she manages to nurse him in secret.
But Tarquin has very skewed visions of the world, of men, of women & their place in it. And Shaila has her own fears driving her & saving Tarquin wasn't part of her plans.
This one has Ms Bartel's wonderful writing, plot & characters; steam, danger, suspense & tentative romance between two vastly different young people with targets on their backs. This is a short introduction to Tarquin's story & my appetite is more than whetted to continue on Candle's journey.

These people are dumb as bunnies, I honestly don't know why I started reading the second book except for the fact that I'm having a terrible book drought...

It's not like the writing is bad or anything, it's just not my kinda book. There's too much smutt, not enough character development and instalove.

I'm actually okay with instalove, it's just... not so much in our modern, contemporary world, you know? Instalust makes sense for real people, or instant attraction, that works too. I know you can develop deep feelings for a person pretty quickly, but the magical, mystical kinda instalove that goes deeper than the surface reminds me of the "bonded" or "Fated mate" tropes. It simply doesn't work for me as well as it does in a book where the world has a touch of magic in it.

I don't know, I hate not loving all books. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

I can’t take it

I’ve been very drawn to Candle for quite awhile. I can’t wait to read of his redemption and HEA. I always have a soft spot for anti-heroes and his complex background is very alluring. I don’t know how I’ll hold out for the next two installments! Hurry Sybil, this was just tantalizing tease! I need MORE!

Tarquin is a man who is not meant for the life he is living but it is the only life he knows. When he finds himself ostracized from everyone he knows it is only because of the assistance of a stranger that he doesn’t perish from his injuries.

His rescuer is already leading a difficult life, but she is unable to walk away from the injured Tarquin even though she knows it places both of them in danger.

This story does end on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to learn more about these characters and what the future holds in store for them.

Hard Limit by Sybil Bartel a five-star read that you will devour. This is the first story in the Alpha Antihero series and what a great read, it started a little slowly but once you know Tarquin Scott and his story you will just be sucked in and love it. I was so taken by the story I didn’t even notice how far along I was and by the end of the story I was desperate for more pages!! The next story needs to come soon!!!

New author for me and was pleasantly surprised by this book. My only dislike is that it has a continuation but, I guess she has to make money. So who am I to get in the way of someone getting a coin 😉.

Tarquin and Shaila's story began in the swamp. Both of them not knowing each other but soon the relationship became intense and complicated.
My heart broke for both of them and their pasts. It was devastatingly broken and unbelievable.

Not a standalone

Tarquin isn’t like other men. He was raised in a cult in the Everglades. He isn’t accustomed to females speaking their minds, enjoying sex or anything soft. That is until he meets Shaila and everything changes.

Tarquin...I absolutely fell in love with that name once I dived into HARD LIMIT. Like, almost-named-my-son- Tarquin- fell in love (yes, I was pregnant when I read Hard Limit which was originally in an anthology at the time). The Tarquin I knew was named "Candle" and he has been a secondary character in a few Sybil Bartel books. He's one of those characters that you don't know whether to love or hate and his actions in previous novels have been questionable-- but one thing I can tell you is that his character has always been intriguing. Like, whenever he would pop up, I wanted to know what was up with him. So it really came to no surprise when I discovered "Candle" was getting his his own book, well in this case, his own TRILOGY. Somehow it just made sense that this mysterious alpha would need three books to explain and explore everything that is "Candle".

HARD LIMIT totally delivers on so many levels. It gives you background-- like discovering the Candle I know is in fact Tarquin and young Tarquin grew up in an insidious cult and one act of kindness caused him to be cast out like trash...It gives you a budding romance-- heroines are hit or miss with me but I actually liked Shaila. And holy Moses...the sexual chemistry and scenes between these two...HAWT. Finally, it gives you edge of your seat, nail-biting suspense in a totally unlikely way. There is no war or action scenes (like we are used to since most of Bartel's books deal with ex-military alpha heroes) but the suspense is driven by a sort of forbidden romance...will they be caught? Found out?

Yes, this book does end on a cliffhanger since it is the first book of a trilogy. But ladies, don't let that deter you from reading and getting to know all things Tarquin "Candle" Scott. If you like them mysterious and SUPER alpha then you need to do yourself a favor and one click. Like right now. TODAY.

I have NO hard limits when it comes to this sexy alpha!

Review:
Hard Limit by Sybil Bartel blew my freaking mind! I already knew it was going to be intense from all the teasers she has given us. But I had no idea that it would rock me so completely. I have been waiting for Candle's story for a very long time. I figured we would get a story that starts after all his action in the Uncompromising Series but holy hell was I shocked to find out we were going back to River Ranch for some more drama. Not only was this story a page turner, it was one of the most intriguing books I have read of hers yet. I couldn't wait to dive into Shaila's life & find out what she was all about. I literally sat in my reading chair & devoured this book start to finish without getting up I was that into it. Learning more of his background with the cult & finding out what happened to him after he was "vanquished" was amazing. Getting to know Shaila & her background made it easy to see how perfect she is for him. Of course she had to leave us in a cliffhanger since this is a 3 book series but even just in this first one I am hooked & anxiously awaiting the next book! That cliffhanger though holy hell so crazy & not fair!! I can already tell that this series is going to be a favorite of mine for sure.

To be honest, I bought this novella because I love Sybil’s writing & I thought it was connected to her Bodyguard series. It isn’t and unfortunately, this story’s not for me. I can’t get past the stilted robotic cult lingo & backwoods golly gee conversation between the two characters. It’s incredibly distracting and not in a good way. I won’t be continuing this series.

WARNING: This book ends in a CLIFFHANGER. There are TWO other books in the Candle series.

Now, with that being said. I love Candle. I hated him when we were well acquainted with him in Andre and Kendall's book, but I wanted to learn MORE, MORE, MORE!

This has to be to date the darkest, most angst-iest book that Sybil has written. If you're a little squeamish about taboo and dark topics, I don't think this is the best Sybil book to read (especially if you're new). But for me -- I love this side of Sybil. It shows a whole other world that most people aren't used too, not everything is fairytales and insta-love.

Of course, I tortured myself and read this book. Suffered from a book hanger and I'm frivolously awaiting the next two books. I CAN'T WAIT!

Ahhh! A cliffhanger!

So, I'm NOT a fan of books than end on major cliffhangers! However, since all the books in this series are out at the time of this reading, I won't pitch a fit about it! But my other problem is that this installment is SHORT. Too short! Of course, this one's free, and you get just enough of it and it leaves off on such a compelling cliffhanger that you're forced to buy the rest because you can't not know what happens! I hate it when authors do that.

Having said all that, OMG, what a story! I'm so sucked in and so invested that I already know I'll be pulling an all-nighter just to get to the very end! The characters are so rich and full, and the storyline is so compelling that you will find yourself fully immersed in their world!

Hard Limit is edge of my seat reading!

I purchased this knowing it is the first of a three book series. I promised myself that I would not read it until ALL three books were available. Well that did not last. This book took me 97 minutes to read. I could not put it down and I truly loved every single word. The way that Sybil Bartel writes it so REAL, ALIVE... as if the reader is RIGHT THERE. I will definitely be rereading all of them multiple times. Way to go, Sybil Bartel!!!!!

I’ve been waiting and gobbling up Sybil’s books since I first read Thrust and loved it. We learned a lot about Tarquin in the Uncompromising Series. To say his character as Tarquin or Candle is complicated is an understatement. This book ended in an usual place, I think. I wasn’t expecting it and wish I could call Sybil and ask, hey, what comes next. The wait has been hard lol. This is a juicy character and even though we got to know a different side of him I have been eagerly waiting and cant wait to read the entire trilogy - it can’t come fast enough 😊👍

Tarquin 'Candle' finally gets his story.
Hard Limit is an amazing story by Sybil Bartel. This is Tarquin “Candle” Scott’s story. I am thrilled that Candle finally got his story. Tarquin is an alpha antihero, and this gives the reader a different perspective on him. Shaila is a strong and feisty young woman, who doesn’t shy away from Tarquin. I absolutely love Candle and Shaila’s characters. Hard Limit is the first of 3 parts, but it is a captivating story that will have you begging for more. I look forward to the next books in this series.

Oh my Goodness, my pulse is still beating rapidly after reading this book and coming to the end. A amazing start to what I know will be a epic story. Tarquin and Shaila’s unique differences and upbringing really bring some crazy moments to this book that I loved. Eek, can’t wait for the next two installment of their story and to find out what’s to come. Sybil did it again, never disappoints that’s for darn sure!

This is a pretty intense read. I wasn’t sure I wanted to read this story after the glimpses we have seen of the hero in past books. I waited because I knew it was going to be multiple books that end on a cliff hanger, and I really don’t like them. Now all four books have been out for a while and I am starting the journey. I love this author and this novella was just as good as her other books. I really enjoyed it.

Undecided.

Still trying to decide if I liked it or not. The characters both have crazy and dysfunctional upbringings as little snippets appear throughout the story. Shaila finds Tarquin half dead and drags him into the shed to tend his wounds. Along the way they seem to develop an understanding and a slightly dysfunctional friendship.

It ends in a cliffhanger and is apparently the first of four books.

Brilliant rlomance

A high stakes romance where a young girl finds a badly beaten cult member that was left for dead. She rescues him and he helps her escape from her MC President criminal father, who sold her and her virginity to another high ranking biker.
The setting, characters, plot, dialogue and pacing are brilliant and reflect the urgency of the situation.
I totally recommend reading it.
