The Aldens spend the summer on Grandfather's island! Joe, the island's friendly handyman, helps them with anything they need, but as the children continue to explore their summer home, they realize there is more to the island―and to their new friend―than meets the eye. Adapted from the feature film of the same name, this early reader allows children to step into reading with a Boxcar Children classic.
Nice story, I truly only question that leaving the kids on an island by themselves for a summer. But parenting is different then it was when these books came out.
I love the light-hearted nature of this story. I definitely wouldn't send my children off to an island by themselves for a whole summer, but the setting and time period of this book allows for that being somewhat normal. I enjoyed reading about Joe's background and find it interesting how he ends up being connected to the Alden children. This book, certainly shows some surprises and that they can have surprises pop up that aren't necessarily good at times. I have enjoyed reading this series with Charles. Of course, now he is ready to read the third one. While the series is old, with references to times before our current modern and technological era, it has been interesting explaining some of these concepts to Charles as we read.
