A bloody surprise turns a summer visit to the aquarium gruesome, but the details just aren't adding up. What should be a simple case of a man being eaten by a shark leads Kuroko's investigation to a small fishing town-one that's as much about the cross as it is catching hauls. A cute local girl named Suiren might just be the key to figuring it all out...though Kuroko is getting a little too distracted by her curves!

I really hate to say this, but this is probably the weakest volume in the series. I know I originally said volume 2 was the weakest, but that was at least partially entertaining. This volume? Not so much.

Considering that the mystery for this particular arc starts with a shark coughing up a human arm, I was super stoked to see what crazy case this was going to turn into. While the arc is not technically over, what has been told so far is lackluster at best and disappointing at worst. Maybe the end of the arc will save it, I don't know, but I was pretty disappointed where this arc has gone so far.

It doesn't help that Hinako was so annoying in this volume. I'm surprised at how much she annoyed me, considering she hasn't been one of my favorite characters from the start and I mostly tolerate her. For some reason in this volume, all she does is obsess about marine life, eat a lot, praise the food she's eating, and pretends to be a ninja as a throwback to volume 4. Not that interesting and not terribly helpful to the plot.

All of the other characters were fine and it was fun seeing the group at the aquarium, but shockingly enough the short story at the end, "Girl's Club", was more engaging and interesting than the actual story. It was probably just me, but that's how I felt.

There were two scenes that I particularly enjoyed: the first was the two page spread where Kuroko's shadow is against the altar and the whole image looks eerie and foreboding. The second was the scene where Kuroko breaks through the roof and stands on the altar, bowing as she holds the candelabra. The light of it casted a creepy shadow behind her yet illuminated her tall, thin physique, making her look sinister. Funnily enough, the priest asks if she's the devil, and her appearance in that scene definitely paints that picture.

This isn't a terrible volume and there were some cool parts, but overall it was pretty disappointing considering what the premise was. Hopefully the next volume, which concludes this arc and will start another, will make for this one. Oh well, not every volume can be perfect.

The priest seems very spineless and his nun mother creeps me out SO much...I’m curious to see how they either die or get captured.
