Lift the flaps to reveal the mechanics and engineering of amazing bridges, towers and tunnels including the Channel Tunnel, the Burj Khalifa, Golden Gate Bridge and more. With detailed illustrations and links to websites to see views from the top of the Shard and CN tower, travel through tunnels and see the enormous machines used to create them.
Struan was born in East Africa and spent many years in Africa and the Middle East. He read Archaeology and Anthropology at UCL, and before joining Usborne. Struan worked and lived for a number of years in Petra, Jordan and now lives in London and Dorset.
Bridges, Towers, and Tunnels by Struan Reid focuses on all things related to engineering, design, and construction, specifically focusing on the different types of bridges, towers, and tunnels and how they were constructed. I loved this book! The lifting flaps and pop-outs made it very interesting and neat, as most of the inside flaps depicted the "inside" design of the specific tower, bridge, or tunnel. The book also showcases factual information about the CN Tower, Millau Viaduct Bridge, Tower Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge, Laerdal Tunnel, and many more structures worldwide, which was interesting! The illustrations are beautiful as the colors are vibrant and toned depending on the image they are portraying, providing a visual representation of the specific tunnel, bridge, or tower being discussed. I recommend this book for kindergarten to second grade as the flaps and pop-outs provide a hands-on, interactive element, which is great for younger grades. The book also contains high-level vocabulary terms that are supported by simple explanations. I would use this book to teach students about various engineering and construction processes by creating a class "skyline" in which students choose a tower, bridge, or tunnel discussed in the book and model it on poster paper. I would also create a dramatic play scene where students can pretend to be construction workers or engineers building/designing bridges, towers, and tunnels.
This was absolutely amazing, omg I wish more children's books were like this. It so utterly fascinating to lift the flaps and see beneath and inside the towers, bridges and tunnels. The text is very informative, yet simple. Wow, this really puts the outstanding human work into perspective. Absolutely recommended for adults too, like yeah!
