This is a review of all 5 books in the series. I got the first book for free and finished it in a day.
Zach and Briar are pretty much the typical late teen supernatural series main characters. But that didn't detract from their story. There were enough differences to keep me entertained and some really good ideas in there.
Things I really liked:
Briar was a PITA at times, but she never gave up. She was much smarter than anyone gave her credit for, and when she believed in herself, she was unstoppable.
Zach went from the goody two shoes to someone who didn't care about the rules. I definitely got a Harry Potter vibe from him, in that he would sacrifice the world to save the one he loved. But that's not a bad thing and made him a more relatable character.
The twists in the stories. There were a number throughout the series. Some of them were expected or easy to see coming. Others were not so transparent. I'm not going to spoil too much, but I will say the cat threw me at the end. I didn't see that one coming.
The breakdown in magic. I really enjoyed the way that was described and how people were chosen for their element. It was not the norm, and that was a nice change.
Things I didn't like:
The way some of the dialog was written. At first, it was Briar not speaking in complete sentences. Was it supposed to be her Texas accent? Her trying to be the "rebel" and the "bad student"? I thought it was to show her accent at first, but then other characters started talking the same way. It wasn't enough for me to want to not finish the series and sounds really nitpicky, but it is a thing that bugged me.
The quickness of Zach and Briar's relationship. Here's the whole relationship in a nutshell: I just met you, and I hate you. Wait, my roommate thinks you're cute. I think you're cute. Let's kiss! Maybe that's an oversimplification, but not every relationship has to go from hate at first site to love. Don't get me wrong. I like them together and think they are cute, but I hate the cliche of "I hate you the first time I see you, but in two days, we are soul mates."
On the subjects of cliches, why did pretty much every adult in the early parts of the series disregard everything the "kids" said? The main characters were college age, and most had been around magic their whole lives. There wasn't one adult that Zach knew (since Briar didn't know anyone) who they could have trusted? They had powerful gifts and were able to figure a lot of stuff out but couldn't find one adult to talk to.
All in all, this was an enjoyable series. I did become invested in the characters and wanted to see what happened. I'm not going to lie, I would have been happy reading more about this school and the people in this world. I will probably get the other two series set in this world and read those stories as well.
4.5 rounded up.

Lots. Of action and twists. The final book ties everything up for Zach and Briar. This book has a number of shifts in location and POV as Zach and Briar's storylines unfold. The book pacing is good and the shifts kept me engaged as the finale of the series reached its peak. Overall the series was good. This was a clean read with its storyline and relationship continuing thru all the books. No standalone books, must read them all to get a finished story.
This series was incredible and I had a hard time putting it down. There were so many twists and turns and as doon as you think something you find out the opposite. It ended well though. Definitely an author to follow
Great series of books I had a very hard time putting them down. They keep you on the edge of you seat wanting to skip to the end to find out what happens but don't do it you will miss a lot!
This book was epic! Such a good finale. It was action packed, the plot twists were intense and everything was fast paced and awesome. Good ending too :)
Not only does Zach bring Briar back, but, in the end after a final battle on the grounds of the Academy, Briar and Zach together get into Xylon/Theon's head and finally kill him.
