Revolution and the fight for freedom in the Island of St Lucia!

Just over two hundred years ago, ex-Slaves in the tiny island of St Lucia were at the forefront of opposing the European Slave hierarchy in ways similar to their contemporaries in other parts of the Caribbean (such as St Vincent, Jamaica and Saint-Dominque). These Neg Maron of St Lucia were to so thoroughly challenge the British that at the end of the conflict the British decided to leave them with their freedom.

In his historical novel, "Neg Maron", Michael Aubertin has captured the essence and spirit of those freedom fighters of 1795. In addition to the evils of the slave society, the story shows how the war between Revolutionary France and Britain echoed throughout the islands of the region.

The Neg Maron are a documented part of St Lucian history and I found this a very a captivating story, especially as I myself was born in St Lucia. It would have been nice to see a little more depth to the characters in this tale but overall it was a pleasant read.
