Better known for his surreal films El Topo and The Holy Mountain filmed in the early 1970s, Alejandro Jodorowsky is also an accomplished writer of graphic novels and a psychotherapist. He developed Psychomagic, a combination of psychotherapy and shamanic magic. His fans have included John Lennon and Marilyn Manson.

Uh, yeah. Eww. But it’s the kind of “eww” I couldn’t put down, twisted fuck that I am. And there were some moments I wanted to. Son of the Gun: Sinner is the cruelly bleak account of the life of Juan Solo. And let me tell you kids, this one is filled with some really hard to watch situations. Alexandro Jodorowsky pulls no punches when dishing out all manner of depravity. I mean he starts off with a newborn baby left to die in a South American dump, and while that might not mean a lot to some prom queens out there these days, it’s pretty fucked up. And trust me when I tell you it just keeps going downhill from there. Listing all of appalling shit would just take away from the story and what I think Jodorowsky is hoping to convey. This one is not for the light hearted comic fan. It’s like a Greek tragedy addicted to meth, lingering in a subway restroom, ready to blow a filthy old man or slash his dick with a straight razor. Hate the term “hardcore”, but it applies.



Georges Bess does a magnificent job of illustrating Jodorowsky’s distressing vision. This book would not have had the same impact without his beautifully disturbing illustrations.



I have to think that Jodorowsky is trying to show the depths of horrific behavior that people are capable of in Sinner. He pretty much touches on just about every terrible thing a person could possibly do. Now whether or not he’ll be able to convince me that some people are capable of redemption in his next book, Saint, remains to be seen. One thing for sure, I’m gonna read it.



And HELL YES, it’s a recommend. If you’ve got the stomach for it.

Jodorowsky does not disappoint. This tale has all of the Jodorowsky elements; saviors, saints, sins, redemption, and an eternal quest to find out who you are and what your business is being alive. This is definitely worth picking up, and will keep you reading until there is absolutely nothing left to read.

Jodorowsky deixa o seu lado violento à solta nesta história escatológica de corrupção, lealdade criminosa, morte e redenção com contornos edipianos. Abandonado enquanto à nascença por ter nascido com uma cauda, Juan é adoptado por uma prostituta anã e vive numa lixeira alimentado por cães. A sua arma e uma capacidade implacável para aplicar violência são as virtudes que o levam de líder de gang criminoso a segurança pessoal de um primeiro-ministro a soldo de um general corrupto que controla um pais curiosamente similar ao México. O que se segue é um rol de violência extrema, com torturas e assassinatos a rodos em nome do dinheiro e manutenção de privilégios. A história complica-se quando Juan é destacado como segurança pessoal da mulher e do filho do primeiro ministro. Sedutor e seduzido, cativando também o jovem filho, Juan acaba envolvido numa cilada criada por uma mulher que sabe que o marido violou e matou a filha e encontra finalmente forma de se vingar. Antes de morrer, o primeiro-ministro revela um segredo destrutivo: num espelho visceral do mito de édipo, Juan seria o seu filho, que tal como na história grega foi abandonado, seduziu a mãe e matou o pai. Segue-se uma fuga pelos desertos, que termina numa cidade perdida onde a mãe de Juan decide expiar os seus crimes prostituindo-se e obrigando Juan a humilhar-se mostrando a sua deformidade. Jurando vingança, o filho do primeiro ministro persegue-os com um fiel segurança que tem uma paixão homossexual por Juan. Não o encontram, mas encontram a mãe e chacinam todos os clientes da cantina onde esta se vende. Novamente em fuga, Juan atravessa os desertos e acaba numa igreja índia, onde a sua cauda leva os nativos a acreditar que se trata do seu santo padroeiro. Inicialmente enganando os crentes com falsos milagres, Juan acaba por se convencer de que é um representante divino e exige ser sacrificado para que volte a chover. A história termina com a sua redenção através da crucificação, ritual que espelha a história de Jesus e através do qual o criminoso violento se redime de todo o mal. Termina como começa: as primeiras pranchas destes dois livros mostram-nos a crucificação, e toda a narrativa é uma longa descida aos infernos que inexoravelmente leva o personagem a um final libertador após todas as vicissitudes de um trágico destino.

Com argumento convoluto e Jodorowsky a fazer o seu melhor de sincretismos mitológicos numa narrativa intencionalmente chocante, os dois volumes de Son of the Gun também se destacam pelo grafismo de George Bess, equilibrando o realismo sujo com uma paleta de cores que nunca varia dos vermmelhos e laranjas, tons quentes que contribuem para o ar sufocante destes livros.

Holy hell, this was a dark one. The plot holds through both Volumes 1 and 2 and the plot is well designed and executed with the drawings. The art is almost, well, beautiful; but, really, what a dark, twisted, world Jodorowsky weaves. He goes to the far depths of humanity for this tale of sinner turned saint. Not for the faint of heart, young children, those happy in life, those opposed to nudity, vulgarity..oh the list goes on.

At first, and this is stupid of me, I wasn't at all interested in Jodorowsky's comic books.
I'd never read them, it wasn't that.
i just thought that because his movies and books were so incredible, that there'd be no way for something as "silly as a comic book" to ever compare.
Well, history has once again shown that I am a Dumbass and Jodorowsky is a goddamn genius.

Ja wiem, że Jodorowsky to przemoc, sex, a na końcu dojdzie pewnie coś z metafizyki, ale kurde czytam to i zastanawiam się: po co? Że bezwzględność, brak skrupułów i codzienność gangsterki Ameryki Łacińskiej? No ok, ale widziałem to milion razy. Póki co nie tylko nie zmienia mi to życia, ale nawet dnia.

All the dystopian 3rd world country cliches that are humanly possible to fit in under 60 pages are here. It's too bad as the drawings shine and the plot showed plenty of potential on the first few pages. After years or worshipping most of what Jodorowsky has done I am realizing that the quality of his writing never matched his bountiful imagination.

A very good (and actually more coherent than his other material) Jodorowsky tale. It's a wondrous epic and this first part will keep you on your toes. I love the art by Bess, it really fits the tone and style of the book. Excellent.

To jakiś rodzaj obrazkowej, komiksowej Wielkiej Improwizacji. Przy czym nie chodzi o ofiarę, ale raczej o próbę popełnienia samobójstwa - rękami Boga

What a wonderfully strange and bizarre first volume. Jodorowsky's putting forth a ton of ideas, and I probably agree with about a quarter of them, but it's so wonderfully executed I just don't care.
