Following the wonderful antics of Clive Eats Alligators and Rosie Sips Spiders, Celeste Sails to Spain depicts children happy to be themselves. Readers will delight in following the adventures of these familiar characters from Alison Lester's previous books-Frank, Clive, Nicky, Tessa, Ernie, Rosie, and Celeste. What does Clive do at the park? How does Rosie celebrate? Where does Celeste go in her dreams? Each child has a grand time, whether it be at the park, the zoo, in their room, or in their dreams. Celeste Sails to Spain will inspire young listeners and readers to try new things and to use their imaginations. And Alison Lester's cheerful detailed illustrations will have them clamoring for another read.
A group of friends having different interests is normalised and celebrated in this book which is a learning lesson for adults and children. We should pursue our passions and it’s ok if our friends have different interests.
This book is not about Celeste sailing to Spain. That's only the last line of the story. Not sure why she was singled out in the title. I wonder if Clive, Nicky, Tessa, Ernie, Rosie and Frank had to "deal" with Celeste after the book came out. I'm sure there was some jealousy.
It was cute though. My five year old daughter wanted to be Celeste and I pretended to be Rosie. So she got a kick out of seeing what each one of "us" got to do.
This format (offering snippets of an experience from the perspective of each character) is so distinctly Alison Lester and it just works so well. It's such a clever way to represent a diverse range of lifestyles, beliefs, personality styles, strengths and interests. We all have something unique to offer and the way we see the world is valid and just as relevant as anyone else's view.
I picked it up thinking it was going to show pictures of Spain but there was one page that one of the girls dreamed about sealing to Spain. The pictures were good and it was interesting to see the 4 friends stories moving across the book at the same time!
