“Toddlers will enjoy learning about helpful heroes. Very engaging.” - Whitman Public Library Fires are really dangerous. Luckily there are firefighters! They jump into their special suits and within minutes they are at the fire. But they also help people in other ways…. An instructive picture book for children about the brave men who fight fires. For ages 4 and up. What do you want to be when you grow up? Liesbet Slegers’s successful book series helps young children search for the answer to that important question. Do you like food and cooking? You might want to be a chef. If you are afraid of heights, becoming a pilot probably isn’t the right career choice. Or maybe you like school so much that you decide to become a teacher? There are so many wonderful careers to choose from! With clear language and cheerful drawings, this series presents many of the most popular professions. Each book is packed with fun facts, new words, and interesting stories of real professionals. Do you know why an astronaut wears such a funny suit? How about why it is so difficult to be a ballerina or a racecar driver? Or why it’s important to visit the dentist twice a year? Read these books to learn the answers to these questions! So . . . what do you want to be when you grow up?
Liesbet Slegers (1975, Belgium) studied Graphics and Illustrations at the Saint-Lucas institute of Antwerp. She works as a fulltime graphic designer and illustrator. With her simple, recognizable style and vivid colours she knows how to attract the attention of every toddler. In her many books, Slegers frequently focuses on the first experience of a toddler," a time she characterized as "exciting but also very scary! I try to help them with my books," she added, "and also try to give the parents or teacher some assistance!"
A simple introduction to firefighters and what they do. Equipment is shown and labeled. They also show them doing other important tasks besides fighting fires. My one complaint is that there are no female firefighters represented. Bright simple illustrations accompany the text. A nice read aloud for young students learning about community helpers. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

The fire department receives a call for help! We see the firefighters' uniform, the equipment they need, and what they do to get to and put out the fire. They also help someone on their way back.
The illustrations are simple and adorable, I think kid interest would score much higher if the book had photographs instead. The size is great for a purse or a diaper bag and the hard cover is a plus.
This cute title with simple illustrations will appeal to the little firefighter in your life. Both of our boys (ages 1 and 3) love firetrucks, and this book captures their attention. It has short, instructive text that depicts firefighter turnout gear and equipment. I'm glad it also depicted firefighters doing jobs other than firefighting. Despite others pointing out that no female firefighters are illustrated, I'd like to point out that for the most part, characters seem androgynous.
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I do love it when a title tells you everything you need to know. This book is mainly made up of drawings that show the equipment and how it’s used. Most kids probably don’t realize firefighters do more than just put out fires. Ends with a little maze game. Really simple, as in preschool, in fact it says it’s for toddlers, so believe them. 3.5 pushed up to 4/5
A lovely, informative introductory book on the important work that firefighters perform. Children found the clear illustrations quite fascinating especially the one in which the firefighters clothing and gear was labelled.
A simple and easy look at what a firefighter does. Its just like the rest in the series, although they could mention that girls can also be firefighters.
I didn't mind this children's book, however, it appeared below my son's interest level. It would be more appropriate for younger children, either before or beginning school.
Lengthy narrative description about what firefighters do, including a description of their gear and equipment. While representation is limited and text is rather staid (e.g. no female firefighters are present), this is an adequate introduction to firefighting. Recommended.
Pre-K to 1. Always looking for new community helper books and fire safety titles. This book reminds me of the Capucilli books in its simplicity. It shows fire equipment and some situations where fire fighters help. Perfect for storytime.
I have read a few books in this series and they have all been really enjoyable. This one is just as good and I loved the images. The book is easy to read and follow and I can see it being a favourite. Four stars from me for this one.
