Rate this book
Southampton, 1912. Jessie is made from tough stuff. At just 19, after the death of her father, she opted not to follow her mother back to Ireland, preferring instead to take charge of her own destiny. When Jessie marries an Irishman and takes over the running of the cafe she works in, it seems as though all the pieces are coming together. But when destiny and a pushy local businessman have other ideas, everything she has worked for is taken away, bit by bit. Will she find the strength to keep fighting for the life she wants in the face of personal loss, gang bosses and embezzlement?

I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook by June Tate. Totally love books set in this era and this was a wonderful story to listen to. After the death of her father Jessie decides not to go to Ireland with her mother but to stay in London. Jessie is only nineteen but with sheer hard work and determination she is determined to succeed in life. Personal tragedies beset Jessie but no matter what life throws at her she does her best to carry on.

Loved it

The book set in Southampton starts in the year 1912. Jessie McGonigall a feasty red head and her next door and friend Daisy Brown both have husbands working at the docks. Jessie works hard at the cafe and daisy as a seamstress. The Titanic was mooring in the docks the ship named the unsinkable and once she sailed the men would be looking for more work. But all isn't plain sailing for the women and men as you read on. I loved reading this book full of hardship you get to know the characters and feel you are in the book with them it takes us up to 1915 the great war is going on making life harder. Jessie is a fighter no matter what she is dealt with. Very enjoyable book

DNF…. I got to just after Connor’s funeral and realised I don’t actually care what happens from here, I’m sure she will end up with Forbes but where I was hoping the story was going and what happened have no hope of aligning and the character I invested in as the most likable is gone so 🤷‍♀️ I’m tapping out. I’m sure Jesse is ‘ahead of her time’ and ‘an amazing woman’ but I can’t relate to her decisions and priorities.

I loved this book! I was gifted a copy and had never read any of this author’s books previously. The tale was set in Southampton in 1912 and described the living conditions of ordinary working people very well. The reference to the Titanic was interesting. The story follows the life of an Irish girl Jessie through her life and loves and is extremely readable and interesting to the very end.

I found this book slow to start however once I got into it I really enjoyed it. It had a good balance of crime and romance and the romance itself was very passionate and came across really well. I loved Jessie and her independence and her career mindedness.

There was nothing wrong with this book; it was well-written, I enjoyed the story, and the setting - but definitely nothing special.
