When do I correct others, and when do I hold my tongue?
Too often we are late in realizing that we mishandled a situation, causing both resentment and frustration. But what if you could approach every situation with the mind of Christ?
Distilled from his decades of experience as a clinical psychologist and a practicing Catholic, Dr. Ray Guarendi, popular radio and TV host, offers here dozens of bite-sized reflections that combine sound spiritual advice with the best of modern psychology.
Dr. Ray will help you address countless daily problems and create a plan of action for your most common troubles. With his trademark frankness and humor, Dr. Ray tackles all the topics that too often bring confusion and heartache, including:
What to do when you’re easily offended Common excuses parents make for bad behavior in their children—and themselves The difference between speaking your mind and losing your emotions. The fine line between being a confident evangelist and being a jerk? What you should do when emotions overwhelm you? How to hold your children to high standards without causing resentment The difference between making an excuse and justifying an action How to tell people you’re angry without being nasty about it. What true humility is – and isn’t. Thinking Like Jesus is more than a self-help book. It will place you firmly into the mindset of a disciple of Christ so you can focus your attention on God and, ultimately, what it will take to spend eternity with Him in heaven.
This book offers an intellectual yet humorous perspective on Christianity and Jesus in it's purest, non-political form. It's a super easy read with relatable stories and examples.
A really insightful book about how to deal with common social behaviours through a psychological lens with spiritual (Christian/ Catholic) advice.
I found the messages and examples to be interesting, but Dr. Ray’s writing style made it a bit hard to see where his main points were, or you would get to it closer to the end of the chapter.
The book has 35 chapters, but they are super short (2-4 pages per chapter) which made it very accessible for a mum who doesn’t have a lot of time carved out to read daily.
Very much like Dr.Ray’s radio show. I could hear his voice in my head as I was reading. Each chapter focuses on issues troubling many people, but with a Catholic perspective.
I enjoyed Dr. Ray's insights sprinkled liberally with his well known wit and humor. Every chapter is short but to the point. Every chapter brings chuckles as well along with advice to ponder and employ.
I had TONS of notes and was majorly influenced by this book. Well, I pray that I would be majorly influenced by it, that I would actually implement Ray Guarendi's no-nonsense approach to Christian living. Loved this little book - I wish it was more read!
This book offers a lot of good advice. However, like any advice, you have to run it through the "filter" of Critical Thinking. This book contains very little in the way of research and much in the way of advice from the author's experience. That said, he is very knowledgeable and he does quote scripture in a way that makes sense. However, some of his advice seems a bit "slanted" and naive. While I agree with much of what he says, there is some that, upon reading, I had to stop and ask myself, "What did he just say?".
I've heard Dr. Guarendi speak and think he's very solid in his faith. However, this isn't a book of theology as much as a book of "suggestions" that he has based on "life experience" that, contrary to what people think, may not apply to you or your situation. What am I saying: take it with a grain of salt. Guarendi may need to go back for some refresher psychology training to get caught up on the latest and greatest. I would never go to him for therapy.
