"Sheila are you coming into the temple with me?” Sue Ellen asked as she got out of the car. “Two prayers may be better than one.” Mrs Singh would give anything for a wedding proposal for her daughters, then the mysterious text arrives, something about juicy mango's? Will Shaz accept or just visit the Magic Vodka Wardrobe where she can drink and dance with her sister Trace and Aunt Sheila? As Rogue One hits the cinema, George Lucas is back from Uni, but will he catch the eye of the knicker-less shop girl, Sheryl? Martha starts a new waxing business from her back kitchen while her little Avengers terrorise the street. We also meet Betina, the dog walker and the homeless Skinny Rita as they do whisky shots at the community centre with Dammit Janet the local Buddhist nun. As Storm Doris wreaks havoc, Martha chases the wheelie bin full of empty tins of cider down the street. The wardrobe shakes and Shaz and Trace dance to Stormzy as the hairy barman Bachittar watches from behind the counter…. Sighing.
Sheila Patel was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK. She is the youngest of 7 children. Born into a traditional Punjabi family she went on to study Engineering at Leeds Polytechnic and John Moores University. She later obtained an MBA from the University of Liverpool.
After working at British Aerospace for several years, she became interested in working with young people and ran a successful training company in Liverpool city centre for over ten years.
She discovered her passion for writing later in life, having spent magical moments with her huge family and lovely nieces. She saw and experienced many things growing up in 70's Britain. Comedy and humour played a huge role in her life and she loved all the funny things that Indians do daily, to adapt to the British way of life.
Sheila now lives on the Wirral with her Professor husband, two boys and a huge dog. Sheila and her family spent 2006/2007 working in Wuxi, China on a project involving bamboo! You can connect with Sheila on Twitter @vodkawardrobe
Author Sheila Patel has crafted a zany adventure in The Magic Vodka Wardrobe: Book 2. It perfectly blends comedy, romance, and hilarious antics into one delightful romp.
This is a fast-paced story with plenty of laughs. If you need a break from reality, give this a read. I enjoyed it in one sitting.
The characters are truly the best part of this story. It's like a trip back in time to my own high-school days!
Roaring with laughter at Sheila Patel's Book 2 of the series, a very enjoyable and fun read.
We get to know the characters a little more and the Niece's are some how still turning up to work in the family corner shop whilst drunk on voddy! Poor Rajeev getting held in immigration whilst smuggling a gold ring in mangoes had me crying with laughter!
Everyone needs a Vodka Wardrobe and I can't wait to hear what the next book has in store!
Ar Sheila does it again with another amusing trip to the magic wardrobe!I thoroughly enjoyed this book especially the ring in the mango and the funny song references. It left me feeling a little bit sorry for Bachittar though as I feel like he's lost inbetween....
The follow up gives us even more madness from the Magic Vodka Wardrobe. Another fun transportation into the parallel universe where vodka is served on tap by the lovely bearded barman Bachittar. Characters such as Gypo Bob, Slut Candy and Skinny Rita will have you laughing your socks off! Another 5 stars for the talented Sheila Patel. Bravo!
In true “wardrobe” fashion, I find myself having read book three, lost track of time and finally read book two. I suggest that you don’t take my lead and start this series from the beginning in sequential order, so you can enjoy the character development to its fullest.
If you are a delicate flower, this writing is probably not for you, but if you enjoy snark, subtext and British-style satire you will laugh out loud.
The author makes fun of literally everything in a cheeky, humorous way that helps you understand local and popular culture in Yorkshire. She does it so well, the vivid characters come alive and you are vicariously having a blast. In this one wearing bamboo bobble hats is the fashion statement and everyone is a bit leery of the local roundabout. As that’s where a lot of crazy things happen in this one. I won't ever think of them the same way again…
Characters I met before, as in Gypo Bob, Dammet Janet, Shaz and Bacchitar the bartender lives n a magical place where the drinks are always being poured, the disco ball is glittering and the advice is free.
There is a situation that comes up that threatens all the fun when someone gets audited and the whole fantasy could crumble. Guess you better read this one to find out!
I loved the addition of the “bad guy” and how he was described. He was definitely my favorite character in this book.
If you had a long, day, week, life? Consider one of these stories by Sheila Patel to lighten your mood and make you smile.
The grand prize winner of the ‘I can't believe she wrote that sentence in 2019’ is included below. SMH, and still smiling. Send me an airplane ticket to the UK, and pour me a tall one in the wardrobe. On my way!
“He even had the telescope set up – Gypo Bob was trying to find Uranus.”
This book came highly recommended. I was looking for a light-hearted read – something to make me laugh. Sheila Patel’s thoroughly entertaining story did that in spades! Her talent for the highly amusing is second to none, the story so unique that I take my hat off to her (and not the bobbly kind that circulate in the story!) I love the Sing’s family dynamic, Shaz and Trace taking centre stage, and all the colourful characters with their amusing names. I must warn you, though, there are a good few – Gypo Bob, Tattoo Tony, Sue Ellen, Lady Fatima, Dammit Janet (the local Buddhist nun) and more. I’m familiar with Bradford, so picturing Rajeet’s caravan parked on Thornbury Roundabout and the chaos it caused, was an absolute hoot; likewise, most of the antics that take place throughout the book. As other reviewers have given a synopsis of the story, I won’t go into it again, except to say that it is a magical tale that certainly keeps you smiling. I have to confess that I ordered the 2nd book in this series by mistake, having not yet read the first. In no way did this spoil my enjoyment, but without prior knowledge of the Magic Wardrobe, it took me a while to sort the fantasy from reality. It is surreal, some of the situations bizarre, and there were times when I felt like climbing inside the wardrobe myself and asking Bacchittar to serve me up a vodka! I particularly liked Aunt Sheila and the witty remark about her and Saudi Arabian boyfriend, Omar: ‘He was a mosque to meal kind of guy, she a vodka to coma kind of girl.’ I thought that was hilarious! Sheila Patel certainly has a vivid imagination, a great sense of humour and she writes very well. If you haven’t already done so, and enjoy a good laugh, I urge you to give her books a try.
The Magic Vodka Wardrobe is a short, fun read with some laugh out loud moments. Ordinarily this book would have passed me by but I got chatting to the author on Twitter and the reviews were encouraging so I downloaded it free on Kindle. Like book one, I later read book two in one sitting because the characters are so well observed and the situations so perfectly believable that I found it strangely compelling. If you enjoy 'Gavin and Stacey' you will appreciate this British Asian community "up North" and the antics of the cast of wacky characters. It all works brilliantly well because the author, Sheila Patel knows her subject and weaves her story around topical events and contemporary culture and sprinkles it all with wonderful comic timing. You recognise these characters and you know their ups and downs. This story could easily be a TV sitcom and, like the best of those, has pathos and a deeper message beyond the humour.
I could not wait to return to the Magic Vodka Wardrobe and author Sheila Patel did not disappoint! The zany daily antics of Shaz, Trace, and Aunt Sheila continue with their friends and family. Romance is in the air this go around--will the ladies find true love? Or stick to drinking voddy's and dancing in the Wardrobe?
Another very fun, page turning read from author Patel. Love the characters and their hilarious situations---you're drawn right into the party that never seems to end! A great read, highly recommended!
The enchanted alcohol-soaked wardrobe is back, and love is in the air. Well, something's in the air, and it's not just the smell of greasy fish and chips. Under the wary eye of turban-topped barman Bachittar, the gals continue to dance and drink beneath the glitterball whilst studiously avoiding anything that smacks of growing up. Aided - or perhaps I mean infected - by a supporting cast of reprobates, including Skinny Rita, Slut Candy, Tattoo Tony, Omar the Saudi, Gypo Bob, Dammit Janet, and eyebrow-waxer Mad Martha with her super hero-themed offspring, the hi-jinx continues unabated despite threatened hurricanes and unreliable boyfriends. Hilarious and wacky, TMVW2 is another laugh-out loud journey into the Yorkshire Surreal. I enjoyed it even more than TMVW1 - and that's saying something. Highly recommended, especially if you can't afford a trip to the pub to cheer you up, or don't have a well-stocked wardrobe of your own.
I picked up this book not knowing what to expect and it didn't disappoint. I was immediately sucked into the story, a colorful, cheerful and loud community where everyone knows exactly what's happening in their neighbor 's yard. Fathers, mothers, daughters, aunts, friends, cousins, they are there for each other and, eventually, to enjoy the Magic Vodka Wardrobe.
Aunt Sheila was my favorite character, the one woman all girls go to when in need of advice and, boy, is she knowledgeable! But I also enjoyed the forever hopeful Shaz and romantic Trace.
I would highly recommend The Magic Vodka Wardrobe to anyone in need to escape from reality. It has humor, an intriguing plot and characters that jump off the page!
Mad shenanigans again! An old caravan on a roundabout with traffic hooters and bright lights. It is how Rajeev dazzles a girl with a fast food take away.
Mad Martha is going entrepreneurial with her front table and bikini waxing business. While the Magic Vodka wardrobe awaits the attention of the wonderful wizard of wardrobes MOT inspection.
The Magic Vodka Wardrobe is like the Tardis. It has a grand bar and a live-in barman. The girls can get as inebriated as they want because outside in the real world, everything is completely surreal! Yep, Outside it is total plucking hell and calamine lotion for the girls of the Magic Vodka Wardrobe.
It can be grim up north, or so I am told, but not if you’re a family of sisters with a Magic Vodka Wardrobe to dispense the drinks. Alas, the magic of the walk-in speak-easy is under threat with an MOT inspection looming from the wonderful wizard of wardrobes. What will they do if their sanctuary fails the inspection? Charming, madcap characters abound, each simply trying to live their own lives as best they can. A very short read nicely written.
I LOVE the craziness this author has brought into my reading life. I read the first in the series recently and expected to laugh again reading this second one, but I didn't think I could giggle from Page One. Hilarious situations and memorable characters. A must read for anyone who needs a good dose of laughter.
