I received a copy of book 1 in The Eden East series in exchange for an honest review earlier this year (click here to view my thoughts) and I couldn’t be happier. Sacha introduced me to this who new and exciting world that I now can’t get enough of!
The characters we know and love (and hate) from the previous book are back again, and their development and progression from the first book and as before are perfectly formed on the page. I love when I can really connect with characters; the more life-like and realistic they are, the easier I am able to do this. The characters in this series are so well-balanced each with their own personalities and individual flaws, it just makes for a fantastic book which really comes to life.
Eden and Trey are just so perfect - their relationship feels so real and they support each other through thick and thin. I can only liken them to certain Sarah J. Maas couples that really bring out the best in each other! #couplegoals
I really love the way Sacha has brought Eden through her trouble, and gives her the personality to match; not shying away from Eden's true strong and independent self, but taking her losses and personal battles into account.
Bo and Kato are definitely a couple I'd like to see more of - both separately and apart because whenever the story involves either one of those you know it's gonna be good, they both are able to add this depth and bring out the "friend" Eden which really helps the protagonist become a realistic character the audience is able to connect with.
Similar to the characters, the setting and world of Trutinor is one impeccably described which I think really comes to life for the reader. It is the attention to detail in scenes which enables the audience to build this world in their mind's eye and be transported to this whole new world. I also love the similarities between this world and our own - I think it really helps to build up the image and feel like you're there; I can liken someone on their CogTracker to someone on their phone here, and I think those subtle differences make it this entirely new wonderful place that people can really get on-board with!
The pace of this book is also really great with endless action, mystery, and intrigue leading the reader through the pages. I simply had to know what was going to happen next and couldn't put it down. If you're looking for a gripping and exciting read with fantasy and dystopia elements then this book is certainly one for you.
Overall I'm awarding this book 5*/5 for a fantastic plot, a killer ending, and some once again, fabulous characters! I'll be forever grateful to Sacha for reaching out about her first book in the series; Keepers. I cannot wait to see what is in store for Eden in the next book! The book has plenty of action and adventure without compromising on character development and detail - it's a perfect balance!

This sequel to Keepers was every bit as exciting and well written. Love these characters and the storyline. Again, I recommended it to others who also ordered it. Her villains are really evil and the female protag is wonderfully strong and capable. Highly recommend this series. Reminds me that I need to see if her third book is out.

I couldn't put it down!
Another amazing story, full of detail and an amazing plot line, by Sacha Black.

I reread Keepers prior to reading Victor, which was definitely a good idea. A lot of the background information is necessary to understand and fully enjoy the new book. That being said, there is still a lot of detail in this second installment that would fill in some of the gaps left by not reading the first book (just not completely).

This book. The attention to detail is just one reason I am in love with this series and this author. From a coin that Eden's father gives her and its reappearance throughout her story, to the characteristics that shifters adopt in their animal and Keeper forms, to the construction of Stratera Academy with its majors and minors (set up very similarly to an "Earth" school), it is clear that no detail is too small and that the author really pays attention to the workings of this world and the characters that she has created.

That being said, the world of Trutinor is a place that you can visualize and really understand. With the attention to detail, comes a full immersion into who these characters are and how their lives go. We see Trutinor through the eyes of Eden. We notice the things that she notices beyond the scope of an invisible narrator watching the scene play out from above. We are brought, as readers, into the action and inner workings of the story.

The crossover between Trutinor, Earth, between the genres of fantasy, fiction, dystopian... The Cogmail system is how communication is run in Trutinor. They are devices, sort of like smartphones or tablets, with email and applications and can project things like maps. It is a perfect blend of this other world that Sacha has created, and modern day technology. While much of the story is about the Keepers directly and what happens between them and in Trutinor, you cannot forget that the Keepers have a purpose to maintain balance for the humans too which naturally makes them cross paths and experience the trends of that world as well as their own. So, it would make since for them to adopt our technology, right? Of course!

The characters: Eden, Trey, Bo, Kato (my baby), Victor (the jerk that I continue to have hope for and just keep getting my heart ripped to shreds), First Fallon, Arden, Last Fallon, Hermia... then our new additions (I have some new favorites but do not want to spoil the newcomers!).

Something I definitely want to give a shout-out to. The relationship between Trey and Eden. In so much cliche, tropey YA lit, the mate bond/relationship/obsession with the heroine and her love interest is so damned all consuming. While I am down for those cutesy moments, and those borderline steamy ones, it can get a tad frustrating. THANK YOU for creating a relationship that, while controlled by the Binding/Fate (in that it’s hard to be apart and hard to stay mad at each other) isn’t so damn mushy-gushy and all consuming. Eden and Trey love each other and would sacrifice anything for the other, BUT it doesn’t come off as annoying as it does in some YA books. It doesn’t feel superficial, it doesn’t control the story line, and it is just a part of the story of what is happening to Eden and Trutinor.

Finally, the ending... WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL SACHA!! WHY. WHY. WHY???!!!?!?! If the third book does not come out real quick I am going to lose it.

I pulled some quotes I really enjoyed from the book, so if you are scared of spoilers, it might be best to skip this section!!

WITH KNOWLEDGE SHALL WE JUDGE. “The academy’s motto is a stark reminder of what we’re here to do: weigh the Balance of fate, and ensure the fate of humans and Keepers alike is carried out.” (Loc 100 of 4177) I LOVE THIS! It is a pleasant reminder of just who and what the Keepers are, what their mission is, and what Eden believes is her duty (along with her duty to her own people of course).

“The point,” Kato says, “is that even I couldn’t do that, and I’m a god damn genius.” (Loc 210 of 4177) Kato is still my most favorite character because... well of situation like this. His cocky attitude and general, fun-loving nature is a fun little aside throughout the story.

“I give her the ‘is everything okay?’ look, but she shakes a nod at me; I’m not sure if it means yes or no.” (Loc 1401 of 4177). This. This is so reminiscent of real life motions and actions. I loved it because as I was reading, I was moving my head like I was doing the awkward nod-shake thing. Very realistic. And how Eden was like... uh what does that mean? Same. I cannot even begin to describe how many times that has happened to me and my friends. Like are you okay or not? I genuinely cannot tell.

The vault: the mental shield put up by Trey and Eden to keep the imbalance of powers within them, set off by their parents’ untimely deaths, hidden from the world. This gives such a great visual for readers. Throughout the book, when it comes up, I can just picture the cracks and imagine something pushing against the doors to fight its way out.

The first thing I loved about this book was that the action never stopped. I would promise myself that I’d put the book down after whatever chapter I was reading, and then I would come to the end of that chapter and HAVE to go on to the next one, I could not stop myself. The second thing I loved was the love story/romance storyline—super steamy and absolutely great chemistry between Eden and Trey (our leading lady and man). I loved both of them so much, so it was incredibly satisfying to see them finally together, and navigating the rollercoaster of their relationship and the events happening around them. The story revolves really nicely around the action and the romance elements, and the backstory is seamlessly woven throughout, so I felt literally every second like I was being carried along with the story and had no conception of time passing. This is my favorite “zone” to be in while reading!

Now, I will say that I already read Keepers (the first book in this series) before I dived into Victor, but I honestly feel that Victor can be read as a standalone book. The author does such a great job of inserting the essential tidbits of backstory that you never feel confused or like you’re missing something if you haven’t read Keepers. However, anyone who reads Victor is going to automatically want to read Keepers if they haven’t already, because you will guaranteed get sucked into this world and want to know as much as possible. It’s a highly addictive series to get hooked on.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone who’s into YA fantasy, YA sci-fi, steampunk fiction, YA/NA romance, speculative fiction, or just wants an amazing series to sink their teeth into. Victor does not disappoint!

No, no, no, no, NOOOOOOO!

Edit:
Yup, this was my reaction when I finished the book at 4:00AM.
First of all, I would like to thank the author Sacha Black for sending me a review copy of the second book in the Keepers series “Victor”.

This review might contain spoilers for the first book. So if you haven’t read it yet, I highly suggest you check out my non spoilers review of the first book in the series here.

This book starts about two months after the first book has finished. The main character has restored her friendship, finally got together with her love “Trey”, and a certain dead character is well... undead.
The format of the book is similar to the first one where each chapter begins with a quote or a definition that helps us understand the world. There is a gorgeous map at the beginning of the book and a glossary section to help you out in case you needed to check a meaning of a certain word in the book (which is always so useful in fantasy books)!

I admire how Sacha Black was able to build such an intricate fantasy world with a unique setting and magical rules in two short books. However, this book had a lot more dangerous elements with higher stakes. I guess my favorite part is that they started in Stratera Academy, and I am always for a magical school setting! YAYYY! I just wish we can see more of it in the future.

For a self published book, the editing skills of the author were excellent. It barely had a couple of typos which I believe might have already been fixed in the published book.

The only thing I was uncomfortable with is that I felt that one somewhat romantic scene was happening at an inappropriate time. Other than that, the book was a fast paced read that kept me up until 4:00 am daily.

It’s been a while now since Keepers was published. I devoured that and was waiting eagerly for the next instalment, Victor.
And I can honestly say I was not disappointed at all.
The story picked up from the end of Keepers and within moments of opening the first page, I was right back in the action.
Beautifully written, with evocative language, Black kept me on the edge of my (car) seat the whole way through the book. I could feel the emotions and picture the scenes within my mind.
I loved the developing relationship between Eden, the protagonist, and her Balancer, Trey (who, might I say, is a hero of dreams!)
The constant reappearances of the should-be-dead Victor had me racing through the pages.
And the ending… Oh My!
Trutinor, what is going to happen?! (Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but WHAT AN ENDING!)
I am now going to be constantly checking for news of book three! Hurry up Sacha Black!

Like Keepers, this is the second time I'm reading Victor. Since the third book was recently released, I decided to read through the series again. It's been a while and I needed to refresh my memory.

Being a sequel, this book explains much of what happened in the first book. However, I still recommend you read Keepers in order to get familiar with the characters and experience what happened firsthand because it's a lot.

Victor is no different. In this next installment of the series, Eden finally has what she wants: Trey. But the thing is, they still have enemies, she still has a lot to learn, and... oh yeah, she keeps dreaming about Trey's death.

I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't say too much about the plot other than that events from the first book come back to haunt Eden. Not only do Eden, Trey, and the rest of their group have to defeat their enemies, but they also need to save Trutinor in the process.

Like the first book, this one is well written. There were a few subplots to follow along with, which made it confusing at times. If you can juggle multiple plotlines, then this is a good book to check out.

Overall, though, the writing is well done and the characters are fun to be around. If you like fantasy and want to try out a new world, then give Trutinor a visit in this book.

“Victor” is the second book in the Eden East series, and you really do need to read the first book before jumping into this story, as Black doesn’t do a ton of recapping, which I like! I don’t like spending chapter after chapter just going over past information, but at the same time, I did have a bit of a hard time remembering some of the smaller characters… Still! This book picks up right where we left off, with the slain Victor coming back to enact his revenge and to push Eden and her Balancer (think husband/soulmate) towards a prophecy that will change their world forever. Black has an incredible ability to make each chapter gripping and leave you wanting more. The world of Truintor is fascinating and the struggle Eden finds herself in is extremely compelling; I felt all the feelings during this book and enjoyed it a great deal more than the first book, which is saying a lot as I enjoyed the first book! There are only a few things in this story that left me a little less than satisfied.

Like I mentioned, Black’s writing is a joy to read. The flow is perfect; everything in the story has a reason for being there, so the pacing was—to say the least—fast-paced but without breezing over crucial elements. The world felt much more defined this time around, even if it was a bit odd that all the major players are all kind of related to each other in some way. We get a bit more of the prophecy in this novel, as well as a lot more of Eden and Trey’s relationship, as well as Eden’s struggle with her best friend. All those interpersonal relationships felt so real, Eden’s jealousy and her yearning to preserve the little she has left… it hits you right in the gut. But outside of a bit more robust world building and more specifics on the prophecy, a lot of the story was a continuation of the first book: fixing all the things left broken from the first novel in the series. Which is fine, except part of me still wants to see these magical Keepers go to Earth and start balancing! I’m not sure how long this series will be, so I’m sure there will be a book where we get to see just that at some point, but it still feels a bit disconnected from the current story.

If you enjoy incredible fantasy worlds, magic, and some science fiction with steampunk flavors, this series will not disappoint! And if you like action scenes that feel like a movie with a twist on “there are only two sides to a prophecy” trope, then pick up this book! However, I will say that I don’t think this is a young adult novel, more of new adult. There is enough language to be noticeable, and that’s on top of the violence, drinking, and the sex. It’s not graphic like some books that claim to be YA, but given the main characters are in “college” and are married, and therefore have sex (and it plays a pretty prominent role in the book), I’d still classify this as more new adult than anything else.

Now, my hang-ups really come at the end of the book, outside of wanting to see the Keepers you know, do what they are supposed to. The book ends in a way that is so similar to how the first book ended that it makes me worried that book 3 won’t be all that different than “Victor”. I ache for Eden, sure, and I want nothing more than to help her kill Victor again (and again for good measure, because that guy sucks for reals). While the ending was epic for the big battle scene, that’s also what we got in the first book with a very similar outcome. And while it makes sense with all of the dreams Eden has, I was still hoping for something different enough to where that parallel wouldn’t be as obvious to me, maybe? Still, I really enjoyed the fast-paced nature of this book, I love all the different magic systems, and Black can—simply put—write great, compelling stories! I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series, as my soul needs Eden to end so, so many people at this point. So that’s why I’m giving this book a well-deserved 4.5 stars, and thanks to the author for providing me with a copy for review!

Victor buzzes with magic. It's an intense thrill ride that will have you on the edge of your seat! With a vivid world, dynamic characters, and a heart pounding plot, you will not be disappointed!

Once again, Sacha has astounded me! Victor was everything I had hoped it would be and so much more! I could not put it down!

It picked up shortly after the ending of Keepers and was driven with an exciting pace. Bits and pieces of reminders from book 1 were sprinkled in throughout the story to help bring back important events so I didn't feel lost. It was well done and I loved it more than the first!

Victor returned me to the incredible world that Sacha had created in Keepers. I loved how the culture and history of Trutinor continued to be developed and flourished with vivacity! I didn't realize how much I had missed the keepers, fallons, shapeshifters, elementals, and sirens. There was also more history introduced regarding the mermaids of the world!

To avoid spoilers, I've decided to only talk about Eden. I loved her tenacity and strength. She continued to grow and develop from book 1 and had some crazy obstacles thrown her way in this one! I've become so invested in her, and the other characters, that I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book!

This one was so wild and unpredictable. I loved it! I can't really talk about the main events, or the main characters, without giving spoilers away, but I'd definitely recommend buying both Keepers and Victor and reading them back to back! Victor was so much better than Keepers, and I had already given Keepers 4.5 stars. Both books had this amazingly vivid world that Sacha imagined, and amazing characters, but Victor really kept up the exciting pace and shocked me so many times, and left me in a tizzy with the ending!

Mermaids 5 2

I'm an avid fan of this author and the Eden East Series. I've also read and reviewed the first book in this series, Keepers, which you can find on colleenchesebro.com.

Victor is the second book in the series and starts out with a bang! After crashing Eden's coronation it becomes apparent that Victor is very much alive, even though Eden stabbed a poisoned knife through his heart. It's as if Victor can't die!

And if that it isn't enough to grab your attention, Eden finds that she must rule as the "Fallon of the East" and as the head-girl in Keeper school. She also becomes part of a conspiracy to overthrow the First Fallon and joins in the rebellion.

Meanwhile, Eden is still reeling from the deaths of her parents. Those feelings comingle into her life with Trey, her balancer, and soul mate.  Look for some steamy scenes between these two! Whew! Their relationship is all consuming. These two are so twisted up together that the reader knows one cannot live without the other.

Yet, a sense of uneasiness hangs over Eden's world. For all the happiness she shares with Trey, she is plagued with horrible nightmares about the fate of Trutinor and her beloved. She finds herself consumed by these dreams terrified they are prophetic in nature.

Eden turns to two friends, Sheridan, and Charlie who is able to provide some interpretation to her dream sequences. Charlie travels within her dreams searching for the answers that Eden needs to save Trutinor and Trey.

In my humble opinion, Victor surpasses the first book, not in storytelling, but in the detail given to the worldbuilding of Truitnor. This novel could almost stand alone, it is so powerful. However, from the skillful words of this author, the reader learns more about the dryads and the shifters, and the role they play in this realm of existence.

By the end of Victor, I found myself fully vested in the characters and in the mystery that envelopes Trutinor. This is an action-packed novel that transmits just the right amount of tension so the reader will beg for more. I'm begging! I can't wait to find out what happens next!

MY RATING:
Character Believability: 5
Flow and Pace: 5
Reader Engagement: 5
Reader Enrichment: 5
Reader Enjoyment: 5
Overall Rate: 5 out of 5 Stars

I was given an ARC copy of Victor in exchange for an honest review. Beware that this review contains spoilers for Keepers and mild spoilers for Victor in the first paragraph below, through the Victor spoilers happen within the first couple chapters. :)

Victor was the second book in the Eden East Series (Book 1 -Keepers). So much happened in this book. I like how the author peppered in a review of events in the first book without repeating it over and over. This book starts off were the first one left off, with Eden concerned about Victor’s return. Before she can concentrate on that however, she has to assume multiple positions: as the Fallon of the East, head girl in keeper school, and a conspirator in the Libra Legion, which seeks to overthrow the first Fallon. If that weren’t enough, Eden is also trying to grieve her parent’s death, start a life with her balancer Trey, and is experiencing terrible nightmares about Trutinor and the fate of Trey.

I love how Ms. De Black presented multiple arcs in this story and how they came together in the end. I liked that we got to know a little more about each type of Keeper, particularly with the additions of Sheridan and Charlie. The dream exploration with Sheridan was particularly interesting and added several layers to the story. Charlie was a great way to show and explain the powers of a Dryad. I also loved the detailed shifter chase. We also get a new group of people who remain fairly mysterious for most of this book, but I’m sure we’ll see more of them in book 3.

Victor is actually better than Keepers (and I adored Keepers)- it added great detail to the people and world of Trutinor and one big, complicated mystery is solved at the end, but like all good tales, several other questions remain for the next one. I can’t wait to see what the full prophecy is, Eden discovering more about her role, what happens with Lani, and Cassian Black, and how it all fits together.

Do yourself a favor and read Keepers and Victor. They are wonderful, fun, adventurous, detailed reads, and I hope they put Sacha de Black on the map.

I really enjoyed Keepers, the first book in Sacha Black’s series, so was very keen to read on and see what happened next, especially with dreamy Trey and feisty Eden. Victor, the second book in the series, did not disappoint! Starting a few weeks after the climactic end of Keepers, the story starts with Eden and Trey back at school, madly in love, and ready to get on with their lives together. Except there’s one problem: Victor. He’s returned from the dead, and seems intent on destroying Eden’s happiness…

Victor takes the reader on a wild ride, both emotionally and action-wise, with a solid pace throughout as well as lovely descriptive writing. As for the ending? Well, I’m not going to give away any spoilers but BE PREPARED.

When is book three going to be out?

This book is a real page turner. The author keeps your interest throughout with a detail rich setting, larger than life characters, several punchy plot twists and a powerful ending.

The relationship between Eden and Trey is under pressure in this second novel of the series. These characters are not only struggling to deal with their strong emotions for each other, but they are also facing the return of evil Victor, who they believed was dead.

I loved Victor’s eerie presence throughout the book. This was cleverly crafted by the author.

By the end the story has really opened up and you are left drumming your fingers waiting for the next book. A great read!

A strong sequel that holds its own. I really enjoyed getting more of Victor and discovering the hidden secrets of the First Fallon. The world building in book one was excellent but I loved the hidden secrets and additions this one provided (vague to avoid spoilers). I did feel that the story has so much going on concurrently that it feels heavy and sluggish at times. On the plus side, I loved trying to puzzle out where the story was going and just who the real threat to Trutinor is. Navigating the gray between good and evil is a favorite of mine and so many characters are in this gray area, the twists and revelations seem non-stop. This is a heavy-hitting series and I can't wait to see how things play out.

Sacha Black has done it again! Another ten star read from me!

Except it’s TEN FOR SACHA!

If you haven’t checked out her introductory book to this series, or would like to read my review on the first book, check it out! And if you’re looking to read this book, I advise either begin with Keepers, or if you’ve read it before to reread it again. Just as a refresher.

First things first, this cover is AWESOME!

Now on to my review:

The characters I grew to know and love from Keepers are back and better than ever! Their development is plotted perfectly in progress with the current plot line of this sequel. And, of course, connecting with characters is a big plus. Black made them seem human and real, and I must say that I do not come across many authors who can beat that feat.

Obviously my ultimate favorite characters are Eden and Trey. Talk about the most realistic and adorable couple ever! Their fights were genuine, and their love was realistic, it wasn’t mushy, but actually tangible. We live in a world were YA love is cliche and makes you want hurl. So, thank you for giving us these characters who aren’t freaking annoying and represent what a real relationship should be like.
