I fear I abandoned the Spark brothers back in 2020 but I'm determined to catch-up with all their shenanigans and, of course, romance (!) in very short order. This is the second book in the series but easily reads well as a standalone too. Love the brotherly connection, their genuine interactions whether they are joking around or engaging in serious heart-to-hearts. It's a fantastic foundation for a series.

And this time it's Brandon's turn to find love, which is only fair since he's...wait for it...a popular romance author who writes swoonworthy happily ever afters all the time...except in real life. Because Brandon is painfully shy and suffers from social anxiety. But he made one special friend in college and after they reconnect during a chance encounter, he can't resist trying again.

The author manages to convey all the awkward emotions and heartbreak along with a healthy dose of humour to lighten things up a bit. Like this:

"If God could make a donkey in the Old Testament talk, He could certainly help him form some words, couldn't He?" (p 48)

Guffaw and happy sigh. This story is sooooo romantical not to mention...drum roll please....rapapapum...Contemporary Marriage of Convenience Alert!!! And we all know it takes imagination + talent to make that trope work in the 21st century and Liwen Y. Ho does it brilliantly!!!!!

When I wasn't swooning over Brandon or his brothers, I was cheering Bria on through her struggles as a single mom who has recently recommitted to her faith. Loved the inspirational arc in this novel and the timeless truths other characters speak into Bria's life.

"Well, if it's any consolation, nothing that happens is a surprise to the Lord. The real surprise is seeing how He turns things around for us. And when He doesn't change the circumstances, He does something even better."

"What's that?"

"He changes hearts." (p 33-34)

I have to celebrate a Christian Fiction novel that inspires while entertains and A Sudden Spark does all that -- and more -- exceedingly well.

A Sudden Spark by Liwen Y. Ho

An unexpected hero

My rating is 4.5 stars

Painfully shy. That was Brandon Spark. His brothers were all almost larger-than-life, but Brandon was the quiet one and preferred hanging out in the background unnoticed. I loved that he was a romance writer who had only fallen in love once. Only kissed a girl once. Never dated. Yet his books were very popular. What a fun idea!

Brandon was slightly jealous of his brothers – the way they were so heroic and able to jump in and take charge. It was so cool how he got to be the hero of his story, as impossible as it had seemed.

Bria couldn’t understand shy and quiet at all. Her son, Seth, was an enigma to her. All he wanted to do blend into the wallpaper and read. Bria was pretty much all alone, other than him. Her parents had disowned her; Seth’s father signed away parental rights and ignored his son. It was so sad. She liked Brandon as a friend but he was the antithesis of the kind of guy she was attracted to.

I loved the way that Brandon and Bria reunited and how despite the fact that Brandon knew he was still in love with her, he was so afraid to take a step to get closer to her. The pep talks he gave himself as he tried to work up the courage to approach her were so cute. One of my favorite scenes was where Brandon finally got up the nerve to have Bria cut his hair and then almost chickened out. He met Seth, having no idea who he was, scared to death about having to order lunch for himself. The ensuing conversation they had and the way that Seth talked him out of his fear was adorable.

This is a very sweet marriage of convenience story that is believable and enjoyable.

Review
This book is so cute and sweet at the same time. 2nd book of the Spark Brothers. Really love the relationship between Brandon, Bria and Bria’s son Seth. Brandon is such a sweet guy eventhough he is really introvert. And who doesn’t want a family with bookworms hehe… it would be a dream. Raving about the books that we love. And it’s really hard to find a guy like Brandon who loves you like so many years.

What I learn:
No matter how many silly mistakes that you make in the past, God will forgive and accept you. God is a forgiving God. So don’t worry and don’t beat up yourself too much thinking that you are not worthy to be forgiven. God loves you and He is waiting for you with open arms for you to come to Him. When you feel that you are lonely or alone, you are not alone because God is with us and He will find ways to get you the comfort that you need such as bringing people into your life to continue to encourage you and care for you. He cares for each and everyone of us. We just have to lean on Him every step of your life and also continue to pray for His strength and wisdom.

Really can’t wait to read the 3rd book of the Spark Brothers’ Series. It will be Colin’s story. The brother who has an ice-cream business. It will be a fun read.

You can purchase Liwen Y.Ho's books on Amazon and it is also available on KU.

MY TAKE
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, so I was looking forward to this one. The brothers are so different from each other, yet so close and supportive. As a mother of four sons, that's something that makes me happy--seeing my grown sons be friends as well as brothers.

Bria made some stupid mistakes when she was younger and is working hard to keep the past in the past. That's hard those since she's a single mom and her son's father has suddenly decided he wants back in their lives.

Then there's Brandon who's still carrying a flame for Bria from way back in college when they were the best of friends. His only real experience with women is in the romance novels he writes--and the memory of the single kiss he'd shared with Bria all those years ago. When she brings a friend to one of his book signings, they become reacquainted.

I'm a sucker of books with children in them, and I LOVED how much Brandon and her son Seth hit it off. The boy is a bookworm like Brandon was, so they immediately had a lot in common. Blending a family can be difficult, so there's nothing better than having them connect right away like that.

A special treat in this series is how interconnected the characters are, often without knowing it. It's important to pay attention when someone's name is mentioned. For example, Bria was the caller from the first book whose radio request helped get Aiden and Abby together again.

This is the second book in The Spark Brothers Series, and it is so fun because we get to read about Brandon who is an author of romance novels. We find out just how hard it is for him to communicate with humans when he’s more comfortable with fictitious people. He has a hard time connecting with women even though he writes swoon-worthy romance. Then he reconnects with a friend from high school who broke his heart. Can Bria help him find love? Can he help her solve her biggest problem, without his heart being broken again?
I have come to really enjoy reading books written by Liwen Y. Ho her writing is smooth and the story flows with wonderful characters and dialogue. I had a problem of not wanting to put this book down. It truly was enjoyable! I was truly caught up in the story and didn’t want it to end.
The relationships with friends and families are so real. When we can put ourselves in the characters’ lives and understand the pains and joys, that is what makes a book great! This author has done that!
I see there are more books in this series with each of the brothers, now I’m looking forward to reading more of these fun characters!
One other thing I realized is that each of the brothers’ names starts with the letters of the alphabet, Aiden, Brandon, Collin, Darren, and Evan. The other fun fact is that the females they connect with also do the same, Abby, Bria, Candy, Danica, and Emma. FUN, FUN!
This is a wonderful book to read, I highly recommend you pick it up!
I was given this book by the author which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a fun sequel to A Single Spark! I love these Spark brothers! Aiden’s story in A Single Spark was really good and this book centered around the second Spark brother Brandon will totally grab your heart. Brandon is very different from Aiden. He’s a total introvert who writes romance novels and hasn’t dated anyone. He’s loved one girl and one girl only his entire life but she only considered him a friend during college before she disappeared from his life. Bria is an outgoing hair stylist who’s made plenty of mistakes in her life and is still paying for the consequences of her choices. She and Brandon were close friends in college but she was dating a lot of other people then and didn’t see him as anything but a friend.
Ten years later they reconnect and Brandon tries so hard, in his awkward, introverted and geeky way, to win her romantically. Bria still doesn’t see him that way but his gentle, kind, thoughtful, compassionate, and unconditional love slowly changes her heart. His steadfast faithfulness is so endearing and incredibly attractive! Brandon is not your typical alpha hero but he is definitely a note-worthy hero for sure. He knows himself and knows when to ask for help when physical strength is needed but also knows that his strength is in his soft and tender heart and a listening and understanding ear.

I loved getting to know Bria and Brandon. Now I need more of Colin and Darren!

I received a copy of the book from the author and was under no obligation to post a review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Marriage of convenience AND friends to lovers!

Brandon and Bria were friends in college. Actually, Brandon loved Bria during that time but he was put strictly in the friend zone as he was not the type of boy to which Bria was attracted. Bria uses Brandon to make her boyfriend in college jealous, and then disappears from Brandon’s life.

10 years later, Bria and Brandon cross paths at a book signing for his recent release. Brandon is still an introvert, and he is still in love with Bria. Bria has made some mistakes in her life, including marrying the boyfriend from college and not following her dream to become a teacher. Now, that boyfriend is a ex, she has a sweet introverted child (Seth) and she is a hairdresser. The ex has waived his parental rights, but still threatens Bria that he will take their child from her.

Bria and Brandon agree to a marriage of convenience so that Bria’s ex won’t have a chance to take Seth from her. Brandon, romance author and introvert himself, relates well with Seth, and the 3 become a family unit. With faith and love, they grow to love each other for their own HEA.

I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it.

Brandon is a romance writer who struggles with dating in real life. He is shy and has trouble communicating with women. At a book signing, he runs into Bria, the one woman from his past that he fell in love with during college. Bria always saw him as a friend back then but will things be different now? Bria is now a single mother struggling with a custody battle with her ex. Brandon offers to marry her to help her retain custody. Brandon and Bria have always been friends but their new living situation brings up old feelings for Brandon and some new ones for Bria. Does God have a bigger plan in mind for Brandon and Bria?

I listened to this as an audiobook and I really enjoyed this cute little love story. I haven't read a lot of marriage of convenience stories but it's a trope that I am really starting to like! I really liked Brandon interacting with Seth, Bria's son. They quickly became a family that I rooted for. Brandon was so sweet and shy but caring and protective too. Brandon and Bria had great chemistry and I enjoyed watching their romance grow through their friendship. This was a fun romance filled with heart and faith.

Romance finds the beta male

This was a great romance that grabbed my attention from the beginning and didn't let go. Bria is a single mom trying to find her way and trying to atone for her past mistakes. She is a strong woman that doesn't know her own strength. Brandon is a quiet, introspective male that doesn't get or want attention. I love his character as he reaches out to Bria's son and to Bria as well. The spark starts showing up as they get to know one another. Both have a relationship with Christ. I ejoyed seeing how they try to follow Christ's lead in their lives. The characters are well developed and the story line is interesting especially with an ex-boyfriend that is stalking Bria. I recommend this to those that like sweet, clean, short romance.

This one is a tricky review for me, Brandon is all kinds of great...Bria less so. Brandon is a great character, who cares about his family, work and the folks who read his books. Pretty much your average, sweet and shy guy. Bria is his one who got away - well kinda.

Sure she had her ish, and is doing the best she can now...but her switch from platonic feelings to not, didn't seem real at all. Her kid is great, but she's shown more as working against his nature instead of helping him figure out how best to be himself and fit with society's expectations of a extroverted personality.

Mostly, I enjoyed the read. There were just some moments that weren't for me.

*I'm a lucky fish and received an ARC of the read.*

Brandon had a crush on Bria back in college, but she was more interested in her current boyfriend Richard so they were just friends. When she kisses him and leaves school abruptly, he always wonders what if. He meets up with her 10 years later during one of his book signings and all those feelings come back. But does she feel the same? Richard is threatening to take their son away from her, so she agrees to a marriage of convenience with Brandon. Will they always just be friends or will real life end up like one of his fairytale romance books? I loved how shy and sensitive both Brandon and Seth are. I can be uncomfortable around new people and in new situations so I understand how they feel. He was strong when he needed to be, but also thoughtful, romantic, and humble.

A story about a sensitive guy

(I don't really like the term beta in regards to Brandon.)

Brandon is the catch that tends to get overlooked. He's sweet and shy and caring. Qualities that are highly undervalued.

Bria is a tired single mom with lots of baggage. She learned the hard way that behaviors have consequences. Thought it was hard to read her beating herself up about it. (It made sense with everything that occurred in her rebellious phase, but I still wanted to knock some sense into her.)

Have you ever looked at someone and wondered how oblivious that person could be? Well, that was Brandon and Bria. They just could not read each other at first. They eventually figured it out though.

A Sudden Spark

This is a cute marriage of convenience story. Brandon is a romance author. He lives inside his head to create stories involving love though he has only had one kiss in his life. A college friend, Bria, gave him a brief kiss before disappearing from his life. When Bria shows up bringing a friend to a book signing, she didn’t expect to see her closest friend from college; a time she most wanted to forget. She is now a single mother working in a hair salon. Her ex is trying to force her into a situation she doesn’t feel is good for either she or her son. A marriage of convenience with her best friend isn’t romantic but they want to do what is best for her son. Will this arrangement be the beginning or the ending of their relationship?

This is a well-written, fun to read book using the marriage of convenience trope. I've read a few books using this trope, and I think this is one of the best I've read. The reasons behind the marriage are fairly believeable and the characters are well drawn and grow during the process. I'm enjoying this series, since the brothers all show up in all the books. I'm looking forward to the next book!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I absolutely adored this story. Who wouldn't want to fall in love with Brandon Sparks. Sensitive, giving and loving. Also feeling sympathy for the character of Bria who friend zoned Brandon years ago. But now she thinks she is not good enough for him, since she turned away from God and ended up a single Mom. But God can forgive and Brandon does also. But she has a hard time believing she is worthy of Brandon's forgiveness even though she accepted God's forgiveness a while ago. A wonderful story of hope. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.

God’s timing

Bria made some mistakes she will be paying for indefinitely! Brandon has never had enough nerve to do anything he could regret. When these two old friends meet up after almost ten years they are both surprised by the connection, only neither is willing to confess those feelings.
This book is sweeter than a hot fudge sundae with more sparks than a sparkler on the Fourth of July. Faith and family step in and save the day! In the end we are reminded that prayer works!

Still Waters Run Deep
This is the second book in the Spark Brothers Series. This is a fun story with our hero being a male romance book writer. This is a clean, sweet and Christian story. The plot is well executed. The characters, both new and old, are deep and realistic. I really enjoyed the story and I enjoyed seeing how the author got to the HEA ending. I have read several of this authors books and have always found them to be of the highest quality. This book does not disappoint. I received this ARC book for free and this is my honest review.

This is an interesting story whose tale will surprise you as you fall in love with the three main characters, Brandon, Bria, and Seth. I really like the Christian values that show forgiveness, and hope, and that no matter how far one strays they can return to God. This story is unusual because Brandon writes romance novels yet he is very awkward in social settings especially around women. I really enjoyed how his character evolved once Bria and her son Seth came into his life. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

How often does the shy, socially awkward guy get the girl? Liwen Ho has written a story that definitely makes him the hero worth looking up to. I loved the characters, how God worked in their lives, and their relationships with friends and family in this second chance friends to romance story. A Sudden Spark is well-written: the pacing is perfect and the plot interesting. I definitely plan to read more of Liwen Ho's work. I received an ARC. I chose to write a review and share my opinion: Don't miss this one!

This is the first book I've read by this author. She now has a new fan! This book is absolutely wonderful. It is a Christian romance. It has just the right amount of reference to the bible or God. Some books can be overwhelming with the references. There is so much I enjoyed in the book. The characters were outstanding! I fell in love with how in credibly sweet Brandon is. Her was blessed with patience. I highly recommend this book!

I received a copy of this book for an honest review. I have purchased and read other books by this author. However, I have not read book one in this series. I liked that I didn’t feel I was missing a big chunk of the story for having not read the first book. I would say this is a stand alone book. I appreciate that this is a clean book. It is Christian based but I don’t think any particular religion was named. I enjoyed the story and look froward to reading more from this author.

That was the sweetest romance story I have read this year, I fell in love with Brandon and Bria. Second chance romance always hit me hard but this one was exactly what I wanted. The shy guy, the strong woman, a friend helping a friend. The magic, love, vulnerability shown by the characters are out of this world, I really felt transported into this book as one of the characters. They are developed with great care and it shows, sweet, heartwarming romance.

I had a free copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Romance writer, Brandon Spark can write romance, but doesn’t relate well to women and can’t forget Bria Montgomery from college. When she walks into one of his book signings, he decides to look her up. She has not had happen endings in her life so far, but has a great son who really hits it off with Brandon. A touching story about love, helping others, and finding love.

I love the Spark family. Each of the five brother's has a distinct personality. Brandon in the shy quiet type that hates the lime light and yet is a romance author. While at a book signing event, he runs into his best friend from college. Bria kissed him and disappeared a decade ago. They renew their friendship and when Bria's ex comes threatening her, Brandon proposes a marriage of convenience. I love this sweet romance and the growth the characters make.

As soon as I finished "A Single Spark", the first book in this series, I couldn't wait to get this one. And I loved it! For once, it wasn't the perfect hero, at least not in the sense of being the strong, confident character most often portrayed in books. While confident and successful behind a keyboard, he was awkward in person but still managed to be the hero Bria needed. Now I can't wait to get the next book in the series.

Enjoyable

I could relate to Brandon’s social anxiety issues as a fellow introvert. He turned out to be quite the hero. Bria’s life had not turned out like she’d thought. She was living with the consequences and guilt of her prodigal years. This was an enjoyable story and I’m looking forward to reading more from the Spark family.

Sometimes forever love is staring you in the face. Loved Brandon and really felt for him - so refreshing for a 30 year old man to be pure and inexperienced. Wish Bria had opened her eyes in college but then she wouldn't have Seth - a great kid. Can a marriage of convenience turn into a forever kind of love? Gotta read.
