Amy Beatty grew up in the wilds of Yellowstone National Park as part of an experiment in crossing the genes of a respected research biologist with those of a grammar aficionado. She spent her summers making forts under the sagebrush with her friends and catching garter snakes by the creek to populate elaborate sandbox villages—or holed up in her bunk bed exploring the exotic worlds hidden between the covers of books.

She currently lives in Utah with her husband and their two delightfully unconventional children. For fun, she likes to cut big pieces of cloth into small pieces of cloth and then sew them together again. Several of her quilt projects have been exhibited in juried shows at a local art museum.

Beatty is a solid fantasy writer, by which I mean she knows how to do it; this may be her first published novel, but it's not her first story by any means. She builds a large, complex world holding several societies and a long history; she has original and interesting ideas about those societies and the people inhabiting them; there aren't long breaks in the action for infodumping.

More than that, it's a great story. I usually have to read in short chunks, and I didn't like putting this one down. Finally, I had a morning to myself and decided to read the last third all in one go, because I knew it was going to get too exciting for me to want to stop and go do normal real-life things. Which it did; I was stuck on the couch all morning!

So if you're a dragon fan, or into fantasy novels, this is one to get.

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

I was lucky enough to be a beta reader for this book, and I enjoyed reading it the first time. When I received an ARC, I was interested to see if it held up on a second reading. I am happy to report that it did! The characters are well developed and believable, which is not something you'd generally think to say about dragons. The interactions between hit the right notes of funny, tense, sad, and so on. There are some interesting details about each character that aren't just dumped on the reader, but you get to discover them as your read. The peripheral characters don't feel stuck in—like they're included just because Amy liked them in an earlier draft and didn't want to lose them entirely so she made up a way to work them in. And the resolution is satisfying—except that I want to know what's next!

Would I recommend this book? Yes! It's a fun read, and it's so nice that I can do recommend it without having to qualify any part of it.

Dragon Ascending fits the Sword & Sorcery genre very well. It follows a trio of dragons in human form and their unfortunate dungeon keeper through a world rich in detail and unique fantasy elements, with a heavy focus on romance and Beatty’s interesting take on dragons.

The protagonists are consistent and well drawn with plenty of personal baggage to keep the conflict alive and interesting. As happens with some romance novels, the romantic tension in the latter half felt a little too artificial, littered with important conversations interrupted at exactly the right moment and people who, for some reason, just refuse to talk to each other like adults, or are sometimes a little too clueless to root for.

That, however, is a small gripe about a largely wonderful book. I tore through it faster than any in recent memory, and although I sometimes wanted to strangle the characters for being so dense, I cared about them and kept turning the pages to find out what would happen next. Beatty introduces just enough fantasy and magic to make the world her own (and it truly is) without bogging the story down with overly complex magic systems and rules. She draws history with well-placed storytellers and dialog instead of pages of narrative, and keeps it relevant to the situation at hand, which not only keeps the pace moving, but helps enrich the depth of the characters and the world.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book and look forward to the next in the series.

This was such an amazing story. Great characters & many surprises that you won't see coming. Three dragons are caught & put in the dungeon. Mudge has the job of dungeon keeper & tends to the prisoners and their ailments. Mudge befriends them & they convince Mudge to help them escape. One of them is the king & he must return to his lands and stop his queen from marrying another. Once she does this the new king can steel his magic. Mudge is scared because he knows that if they are caught after escaping he will be killed. After Mudge thinks it over he does help them because he has a very important secret of his own & he needs to leave before it is discovered. This story will keep you turning the pages. Great story & I hope there will be more to come.

Love this book! The characters developed in here are fantastic and I love the way the author unfolds them to her readers. Solid fantasy with adventure and some romance. My husband also loved this book and we can't wait for another one.

I will be the first to say that fantasy is DEFINITELY not my genre, so I was hesitant going into this book. Especially seeing a giant dragon on the cover. However, this was SO much more than fantasy! It was a clean love story above all, and it had a beautiful way of making you fall in love with the characters. I’m blessed enough to know the author, and was excited to see where she would take me on this fantastical adventure. She did not disappoint!

Well Told Adventure

Dragon Ascending is the story of a quest, but told as we've all (heretically?) wished some much longer epic takes had been. We skip right past the back story and set-up to get straight into the good parts.

World-building is strong and rich with multiple cultures and peoples. Each of whom have understandable goals and actions based on their differing perspectives. Of particular interest is the uniquely imagined Alfkin race. The writing is confident. This is an author who knows her story well and has all the needed skill to tell it.

The weakest parts of the book (reason for 4 star rating) are the human relationships. People in real life are thwarted in the process of negotiating wants and desires against external conflicts, expectations and obligations. The people in Dragon Ascending too often are prey to the kind of misunderstandings that would go away if the people would just talk to one another. This trope applied to the main love story as well as the sub-plot / background story that setup the need to have a quest in the first place. These conflicts feel contrived and inspire impatience. There are no steamy scenes.

On the other hand, the characters are likeable and you root for them to each win their happier ever after.

This is titled Book 1, I look forward to the next Installment. Perhaps centered around the former wildling, Finn? His good advice, if he can bring himself to follow it, can cure the weaknesses noted above.

A solid read, recommended to readers of paranormal, fantasy, and fairytale romance.

This was a breeze to read and I very happily sailed through it. I have read my share of Fae and Dragon books and some of the fae terms were new to me; no problem, I was soon absorbed in a new and fun world. Loved the characters and their evolution. This is one of the top fantasy books I have enjoyed, by way more than a smidge.

Update: I read this with my KindleUnlimited subscription, but decided to buy a copy, and have enjoyed reading it again!

A fun twist on the stereotypical dragon kidnaps princess/princess is rescued by hero motifs. Also a completely new sort of dragon, and that's not something you see often.

A quick but well-put-together read with some engaging characters

Romance w/ Wonderful Take on Dragons- +16 read

I really liked how this book started... You're immediately dealing with them (dragons in human form) being thrown in a dungeon and dealing with a twisted dungeon master. It started much more like a fantasy adventure and about halfway through switched gears to a full out romance novel. I'm not complaining because I did really enjoy the book, but the lack of communication/misunderstandings between the two sometimes felt a little too constructed. I really loved adventure plot behind the romance and wanted to see that play out. Overall, it's was a very satisfying romance, dragon adventure and I would absolutely love to read the next book in the series goes.

***Parents: PG13 but suggests 16+ read- This book has some potentially triggering scenes to sexual assault victims. I honestly don't remember any bad language. In terms of violence there are several pretty bloody and graphic scenes surrounding dissections, wound treatment and fights, basically if you are squeamish this one may bother you. The romance side stays fairly tame, although, there is an attempted rape scene, and a sexual assault/murder attempt.

The narrator does a great job with the voices and differentiations - 3.5⭐. I just found the pace a bit slow but turning the speed up to 1.35x helped.

Dragon Ascending is a fantastic book written by Amy Beatty. As you could probably guess the book is Fantasy and about dragons, but once your reach about 1/3 of the way through to about 1/2 you can clearly see another genre taking over with the Fantasy still playing an influential role. In this tale, Edrik in on the hunt to find his lost king, to win the hand of the king's daughter and restore peace in his land. However, Edrik finds himself imprisoned with his companions and his king. Gratefully, no one knows the king's true identity, but unfortunately, they have no way out as their dungeon keeper, Mudge, does a particularly excellent job at keeping them in and away from any chance of escape. However, Mudge has a secret that could help not only save them all from the dungeon but change their fates forever.

Beatty did a fantastic job of pulling me in and introducing me to the characters Edrik and Mudge, and I loved the tension and antics that came about from the secrets that Mudge is hiding from the other characters. I won't give any spoilers as this book as a couple of twists that just need to be discovered as you read (let me know once you do and we can talk our hearts out over it). I love the visuals that she gives, and I love the story as it flows. As a writer there are a few instances that I would change personally as I felt that they dragged out that tension a little too much, but overall, a fantastic story.

Fantasy seems to be hit or miss for me. In the case of Dragon Ascending, I don’t want to call it boring, it was very slow and not all that memorable or interesting.

The entire time I was listening to Dragon Ascending, I felt like I was in a greater fantasy world, but zoomed in on a group of side characters and their slow, meandering, uninteresting story. I was more interested in the stories the characters told each other than I was in the main characters.

The narrator was great overall, but he did say the word “sawr”. If you read any of my reviews, you’ll know I often rant about narrators who can’t pronounce basic words, add or remove letters to them, and how insufferable I find it.

I don’t think this is a bad book, I just don’t know who I’d recommend it to. I doubt kids would have the attention span to listen to this story and adults would likely have 100 other options that would have them far more invested from the very start.

NOTE: This copy was provided to me free of charge as a digital review copy. The opinions stated in this review are mine and mine alone, I was not paid or requested to give this book a certain rating, suggestion, or approval.

I have to admit, I was confused at first trying to figure out who were dragons and who were people. I almost gave in frustration about 1/4 of the way through the book, because it wasn’t making any sense. Then the “secret” was revealed, and it was an absolutely brilliant concept. I don’t want to spoil it for any potential readers/listeners. There was another big twist in the story about 1/2 way through that I didn’t see coming either.
The action was great and full of movement. Parts of the story were predictable, but that did not ruin the it at all. There was enough originality that it holds its own place. I look forward to reading more from this author. Hopefully, the storyline will continue.
The narrator did a terrific job with all the characters and has a very pleasant voice. If you like dragons and battles, I would recommend this to you.

It took me a little while to figure out what was going on in this story, and I almost up on it, but I’m glad I stayed with it. I had trouble figuring out who were dragons and who were humans, but then it all came to light what was happening.
I thought this was such an original idea - shape-shifting dragons, if you will. I enjoyed the characters, and there was plenty of action throughout the story. There was also one major twist in the tale that I did not see coming and really enhanced the story.
I listened to the audio book, and the narrator was fantastic. He did a great job portraying the characters and keeping the tone of what was happening in the story.
I really look forward to reading more from this series. If you enjoy dragons and adventure, along with a little intrigue, this tale is for you!

Dragons, feisty ladies, adventure, fun and romance - what does a story need more? And this one just totally enthralled me, I had to force myself to put it down and picked it back up as soon as I woke up. The plot kept me on my toes, made me bite my nails and laugh and cry and put me through the wringer, the characters, all of them, so deep and if not relatable, then completely understandable. I hated some of them with a vengeance. Other I couldn't help but love from the very first sentence to the end. That Mudge - oh my! Big big big fan here! My favorite side character I somehow hope to read more of is Nik. And I am waiting with bated breath for the next book in line. But never fear! This one has a beautiful beautiful happy end and you can just read it as a stand-alone, so don't wait! I can fully recommend it. And now I will look for more from this author right away!

This is another incredible book that is missing my review, and I reread it, so here is my original review:

Absolutely awesome fantasy with dragons and romance

I have been reading mostly sci fi for the past 4 or 5 years, occasionally reading a UF or PNR. I found out last week that the author had been diagnosed with cancer in September and wanted to help. So, I bought Dancing With The Viper, which I had already read on KU, and posted the book on my FB feed. And I borrowed Dragon on KU. What a fantastically intelligent tale of danger, dragons, romance, and courage. Mudge is just awesome. Eldrick is a sweetheart. Finn shows promise. The worldbuilding is phenomenal; the story had me reading until 6:30am because I had to see what happened next. I'll buy Dragon as soon as my budget allows so that I can reread it.

I was provided an ARC by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Having read many fantasy books, I was excited to read this after hearing such great things from others. I was not disappointed, following dragon-humans on a quest was not something I was expecting and I was blown away with the story.

The characters had such rich personalities, that I felt like I truly knew them as people and could connect with them. It was such a strange twist to the usual tropes that are seen in fantasy books and I was pleasantly surprised and amazed at it.

Overall, this is so much more then a fantasy story, it mixes in romance and some comedy to make for a truly enjoyable read. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to escape into a great adventure.

Dragon Ascending is a fantastic book, and I’m already desperate to read the next one.

Set in a world where dragons can shape-shift from their full dragon form into the form of a human and back again, the novel follows the story of three such dragons and a mysterious human dungeon keeper.

I listened to the book in audiobook format, narrated by the brilliant Christopher Dukes, and I was so invested in the story that when I was listening to it in the car, I was sad each time I reached my destination, and I was immediately impatient to get started listening to the next bit.

I need the next book now!

Really enjoyed this! Lots of interesting world building and magic. Love how women have their own special magic, that was a great touch. The romance was immediate but burned slow enough. As usual, the drama was caused by miscommunication, but I didn't find it to be particularly annoying. I enjoyed the overall plot and the characters. A solid read, and who doesn't love dragons?!

Dragon Ascending

What an excellent story! For once the novel lives up to the hype.
The only drawback seems to be that it's a series of one. I haven't beemn able to find any other books in this series. Hope the writer has another one (or six) tucked away in her brain!

I devoured this book nearly in one sitting. IT is EXCELLENT!! Everything about it was well done, entertaining, imaginative, and heart-rending and I typically dislike stories about dragons. I seriously don't have a single comment beyond that. You all should read this.
