Understanding Alice Du-Kane

Rate this book
My name is Alice Du-Kane. I am your typical Daddy’s girl, and I’ve never wanted for anything my entire life. Well, except for love, understanding, and some freaking peace. You see, Daddy is, or was, the owner of the largest Grow-Op in the country. That’s a marijuana farm if you aren’t hip to the lingo. This business has been in my family for generations, and now that Daddy is gone, it’s up to me to keep it going.

You would think that the legalization of pot would make my life easier, but hell no. Now I’m dealing with corporate bull crap, espionage, and never ending drama. On top of all this, I’ve got competition snapping at my heels. The CronCorp is trying to take everything I have, and the four brothers that run it? They are nothing but ruthless pricks.

Or so I thought.

What am I supposed to do when the going gets tough? I’ll tell you what I’m going to do: Put on my big girl panties and fight like a girl.

Complimentary copy given by author for an honest review. Thank you RW

I loved this story of Alice Du-Kane and the Michaelson brothers: Cash, Oren, Ridge and North. It has a mysterious death, marijuana, men, money and mayhem. It starts with Alice coming home after hearing of her father's passing and being the new owner of the Du-Kane Inc. She finds help in the most unexpected places. She takes her resources and Fights Like A Girl, with the help of men C.,O.,R.,N. - LOL - I made an acronym. I can't wait for the next one.

Ok 1st off I really did enjoy this book and I hope there is more in the future. Whether it's more of Alice and those 4 smoking hot brothers, or a book about Zoe and Ben.

On with my review: The book starts off with Alice who is in law school and loses her daddy unexpectedly. She goes home even after her Uncle tells her she doesn't need too. Now he is shifty character as you will learn. I will not spoil that for you, but tell you will want to thunder punch him in the throat.

Enter those hot as sin Michaelson brothers. Now Alice knows kinda sorta the baby of the bunch North since he is attending the same law school. However, there is Ridge, Cash, and Oren as well. They also own and operate the same kind of business that has been in her family for generations. The brothers step up to lend a helping hand whenever they can. Feelings begin to grow and things happen.

Now the reason why I only gave it 4 stars is because I felt that the slow burn between all 4 of them was not what I was expecting. Do not get me wrong I loved this book and it flowed really really well, but I thought there would be more. I also liked how she finished the book with the possibility of more. No there is no cliffhanger.

The secondary characters in the book were incredible. Her best friend is the type of friend we all should be and it have. She is there when she is needed, sticks up for you when you need it, and leaves you be when you need a minute. The women they helped and how they did in my opinion was wonderful. I loved the message that anybody can turn their life around if they want.

3 1\2

I liked the book, it wasn't a typical RH it had good story line however I felt some of the mundane details where unnecessary while that word count could have been used on other parts. It has a open ending in the epilogue so we might get more however it didn't feel like a cliffhanger.

I'd definitely pick up another book by author since there is amazing potential here, I won't discourage anyone from picking this story, I will say it had some funny scenes and I personally feel the cover is misleading especially for anyone looking for a funny/silly moments read.

This was a very different kind of reverse harem. I liked it !!!
It was fun, and keeps you entertained.
Alice is a very good main female and her best friend is funny.
The men are very different one from de the other but complete her.
This a light read, funny and easy to read

Alice Du-Kane is not your everyday girl. After all how many girls can say that their daddy is one of the largest Grow-Op businesses in the country. Never having to want for anything, she has lead a nice life. Until, her father passes away suddenly. Now she is in charge of a business that she does not know how to run, and is in financial trouble. With the help of her best friend and partner in crime Zoe, Alice sets out to save her dad's company and make it thrive. Enter the Michaelson brothers, who just so happen to run the competing business. What do you do when the four hottest guys you have ever seen want to buy your company? Not only have they expressed interest in the company, they make it known that they want her. There is danger in the air, was her father's death really a heart attack? And if not, will they be coming for her next?

I really enjoyed Understanding Alice Du-Kane, and I give it a solid 4.5 rating. The premise is one that I had not read before, a girl inheriting her dad's marijuana business. There were so many funny moments in this story that had me rolling in laughter. Alice and her best friend Zoe together are gold!! Especially during a certain baking scene, tears rolling down my face I was laughing so hard, that tells you of the kind of relationship that these two have. And the guys Ridge, North, Oren and Cash. These guys are the competition but that doesn't mean that they can not be sweet and hot and so available. Of course not all of them are sweet, cough cough North, but I overall enjoyed them and their personalities and how they treated Alice.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this hot reverse harem read. Alice is a law student, doing well at law school and plans to be a lawyer. Her father, with who she has a great relationship with, is a big name in Marujauna. Personal tragedy changes Alice’s life, but she actually comes into her own.

Alice is a fantastic heroine, she is snarky, strong and hilarious at times. She has her bestie and along the way finds three hot guys. The story is great and flows beautifully, I found myself running the whole gamut of feelings. From touched to excited, angry on Alice’s behalf to proud of her achievements and a couple of scenes made me absolutely cry with laughter. This book was nothing like I expected, it was way better!!

This is the first book by Riley Walker that I've read. I originally had received an ARC of this, but had gone on to purchase it because I couldn't get to the ARC in the time allotted. First, I'll say that this is nowhere near a romance. I know it hits all the buttons that the RWA says it has to have, but just because it contains all the parts, doesn't mean it made it there. This is more like a non-menage menage, if there IS such a thing.

The book was a young (VERY young) look at someone whose father has died and she takes over a legal marijuana operation in Tennessee. It was a little too juvenile for me to get into, and I understand the the authors wrote it for fun, rather than the literary content. I was waiting for "Alice and the boys" to grow up a little, but they never did, but they possibly will in the next book. The pacing was ok in some parts of the book, but I like to be shown the story, not told about the story, so I thought there was too much narrative and what dialogue there was really didn't tell the story.

I know that others who liked the book are going to look at this review and say, oh this wasn't juvenile at all. Well, when someone assumes that a man in his late forties is old and looking good for his age, and has a head of dark grey hair, that tells me they should get out more. I find stuff like that screams juvenile to me and immediately pulls my attention away from the story itself. That's exactly what happened here. The second our heroine, who is supposedly in law school but wants to make sure her boy shorts are very short and very tight (I read that as something a teenager would do, worrying about how the shorts show off her butt???), meets up with Detective Duff, that pretty much sealed the deal for me. I get this was all fantasy, but please, let's get the story moving a bit, don't wait until half way through the book or farther, to get the heroine involved with the supposed heroes (just how many times was she going to kiss them before it went farther - and then when it did, she's the one stripping her clothes off and being the aggressor - nope), and don't tell the story, let it tell itself through good dialogue.

Overall it needed to step up the pace a bit and not drag out the beginning of the story into the middle. And it needed the heroine to take the plunge into her 20's with better dialogue and less acting like 15 year olds.

✨ 4.5-5 Stars ✨

I was pleasantly surprised by Understanding Alice Du-Kane!! I loved it and wish it wasn't a standalone to be honest. My favorite of Riley Walker's so far ❤️ The idea was so refreshing and new, I didn't know anything about grow farms and stores and I was intrigued (yes I did get a little nerdy, but I am an engineer so thats par for the course haha) with the nuances of the process.

This story focuses on Alice and having to take over the family business of now legal growing and selling of marijuana. She was completing law school when her world is turned upside down and she has to uproot her life to continue on her family's legacy. Alice is snarky and hilarious, her best friend is the epitome of hippy but with a ton of sass, and the men Alice falls in love with are so different, but so delicious. I was having a tough time picking my favorite brother, they all kept me on my toes and each chapter brought out a different side to them (I was particular to the hunky computer nerd...sense a theme here 😉😁😊). And I loved the puppers hahaha. I really enjoyed seeing the business side to everything (her picking out things for the store, the guys helping her out with different things, etc.) Favorite details were the store shirts, the nicknames, the group texts, and the taste testing 😂

Like I said, it was amazing to read something so different but was signature Riley Walker (hilarity and steam, mixed with inappropriateness and southern charm haha). I am super excited to see what these ladies do in the future. BTW, definitely made me curious to fly to one of the legalized states and experience these stores personally.

good but not great...

The book was good but it could have been great. First off I really enjoyed the main female character. Alice and her best friend were amazing and had some hilariously scenes, such as the baking scene. I laughed so hard at that one. They both were strong female characters, though Alice seemed a bit naive trusting her competitors immediately, but I could overlook that. The story itself was also very nice, sometimes with reverse harem themes they are a bit short on the story itself, lacking in plot details. THis was not the case here.
The main reason, why I can't give 5 stars, which I would love is the fact, that there was just not enough sex for me in this book. The first one was at about 50% and up until the end I was missing a sex scene with all or at least more than one of the guys. And yes I know they are brothers but for me Reverse Harem have their appeal that multiple partners have sex at the same time.... If that doesn't bother you I would highly recommend this book and if you feel the same as I do about the sex, I would still recommend it but be aware that this is missing :)

This is my first book by Riley Walker and I absolutely loved it. The character Alice going after what she wants in life to have a successful future. Then her dad dies and leaves her the family Grow-Op of growing Marijuana. That's when the four brothers come into her life the run the same kind of Grow-Op. North, who Alice was in college with, Ridge, Oren, who are twins and Cash who are all brothers of the competitive Grow-Op. All the brothers want a relationship with Alice so the dating begins. Then Alice has a big idea about a new product and calls in her best friend Zoe. The part where Alice wants to try making deserts with pot is so hilarious it's priceless. I laughed so hard I was in tears. Alice does nice things for her community but at a price. Someone goes after her and kidnappes her. She's found beaten up but ok. The brothers take care of her and help her with her visions she has. Alice moves in with the brothers who all live in the same house. The ending, well I knew it would happen. I so want to read Becoming Alice Du Kane. I highly recommend this book.

Understanding Alice DuKane by Riley Walker

Alice’s law school days come to an abrupt halt when her father suddenly dies leaving her, his only child, heir to his estate and businesses. Alice quits school to try to save the failing legal marijuana corporation. She discovers problems in accounting, her uncle is being sneaky and so is the board of director's. So she calls her beat friend Zoe in and they go to work to figure things out.

Meanwhile, she meets the Michaelson boys, her main competitors. The four men decide to help her and become friends, then they become more than friends !
Into the picture comes danger, lies, secrets, half truths, some sadness and laughter. The love and happiness between the four characters is handled with great finesse by this author. It ended with a happy ever after for now and I hope this author will return us another book. ….pat….

I simply loved Understanding Alice DuKane.
At the beginning of the story, Alice lived away and was preparing for her final year of law school when tragedy struck. She found herself going home to run the family business. After she realized the business is about to tank, she invites her best hippie friend Zoe to help her out. The board of this marijuana company gives her one year to succeed or she will be voted out of her Dad’s business. When ultimate betrayal occurs, she seeks the help of a computer geek and his 3 brothers. Can Alice DuKane save her fathers business while entertaining with the competitors in the pot growing business. Moreover, can she survive the ultimate betrayal with her father’s brother? You must read it to find out.
This author writes a witty, lol, and suspenseful book. Her charaters are well developed and defined. Her story never falls short and I beg more will be written by her. Well done!!!

A well-told story of RH romance!
Beneath the surface of the ‘spoiled rich girl’ façade, Alice has a heart of gold. I love her take-charge attitude as she works to get her dad’s business back on solid ground. Helping single moms make a better life for themselves brings tears to my eyes. This is not to say that she makes no errors; she does. Don’t we all? Some of those errors are responsible for her on/off relationship with the Michaelsons. Overcoming her enemies (yes, more than one!) shows she has the courage of her convictions.
I love the personalities of each of the Michaelson brothers, although they could brush up on some of those listening skills! It would be hard to pick a favorite, but pushed for a decision, I’d choose Oren.
It’s a very exciting story! Often light-hearted, laced with wit and humor.

Don't pass this up!
Alice is a fun, sexy and engaging romance that covers all the bases
I laughed until my sides hurt - the "test " night baking is hilarious
I teared up when reality trampled on our heroines happiness
And I awww'd in delight when our gal got her men
Great characters that hopefully will extend to a second book
A touch of suspense that smolders in the background
And a whole lot of lovin' that warms the insides
I want to add how refreshing I found their relationship - reverse harem has a tendency to lose the romance aspect - definitely not the case here-this was a slow build romance for each of the characters - each brother brought a different personality and perspective to the relationship and it was highlighted as the relationship progressed forward - all the answers were not magically there and they had a few bumps and bruises along the way

Fantastic Contemporary Romance

The Riley Walker girls have done it again, I love their writing , sense of humor and characters! Alice Du-Kane is a seriously awesome female character, with her ever present red lipstick and chucks in every color, she is definitely my mind of girl, someone I can relate to and could see myself being best friends with. The Michaelson's are every woman's wet dream come to life, seriously there is something for everyone between the four of them. And that shower scene....I wish there had been more of that! The steam level of this book was perfect, the action, mystery and sleuthing were all fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed every entertaining moment of this read and highly recommend it!

Sorry no spoilers of any kind because I’m not the type that does that.
So this is all I’m going to say about this book and that is it’s freaking AWESOME!
The duo team of Riley Walker are absolutely amazing at weaving their fantastic stories together!
Which is probably why they are in my favorite authors list.
They know how to create the perfect blend of vulnerable and kick butt of all their characters and the realities that they live in are just as perfect.
So yes I most definitely recommend this book to anyone who’s looking for a fantastic story to crawl into and totally get lost within its pages.

As far as female main characters go, Alice Du-Kane isn’t as broken as they come, but she hasn’t had the best of backgrounds. Given we meet her in personal tragedy, she’s very strong-minded, assertive, and knows her own mind. The guys are all interesting and have their own personalities which work with Alice in very different ways. There are some aspects of this book that feel a little unbelievable and a little rushed, but you may not notice it. I certainly don’t think it detracts from the novel, especially if you’re reading to be entertained. I read this book to break up a longer series I was reading that was getting a bit heavy, and it absolutely did the trick.

OMG! I absolutely could not put this book down. Read it in one day. The plot and scenes in which the story is written is original, intriguing and realistic. I can not shout it loud enough about how wonderful this story of Alice and the four Michaelson brother is. The characters have real genuine personalities and the relationships are what many women dream of. Alice is a strong, motivated and successful FMC. So wonderful to see her success. ABSOLUTELY THE NEXT BOOK EVERYONE NEED TO READ.

This was kind of a different style book than I usually read, but I enjoyed it... it was a really fun story! It was a little dark in one or two spots, but overall it had more of a humorous, fun loving tone to it. Which I guess sounds a bit strange, since the story starts with the death of Alice's father. But it was really entertaining. She has her quirky, faithful to the end, BFF Zoe. Lovable Dobey. And her pack of lovable, sexy men who all adore her. It was a good read, I'd read more books by this author!

Loved Alice and her guys! But please I need Zoe to have her own thing cause that girl was Hillarious!
Do not leave me hanging, ladies!
This duo is without question a force to be reckoned with.

I absolutely loved this book!

This book took me by complete surprise in the best way possible! Alice is a fighter and protector in the complete sense of the words! She cares so much for others even at risk to herself. Add in 4 sinfully hot brothers, who while I wanted to slap made up for being asses. Then toss in her best friend Zoe, and a certain (now legal) substance and you have one kick-ass scene that literally had me in tears from laughter!
Can't wait for the next one!

So I didn't really know what to expect, this is my first read from this author. I did like this book. It's a good story. The men are genuine people, they help the competition! Like who does that? It was very odd at the beginning of the book because....well they're competitors? But after that I really liked the idea that even though you are competing against one other doesn't mean you can't be friends. I do like Alice and I hope there is another one coming out? I would read it.

Overall: 4/5

Fun, fantastic, and 4.5 Stars!

A very strong 4.5 Stars! A different take on your usual reverse harem read this was fun and I was pleasantly surprise with how much I enjoyed it. The characters weren’t your typical wham bam then they are all together in bed. This story had chemistry, attraction and heat with the characters having intelligent interaction and a modern setting. You need to read this story that will have you believing in HEA in a fun setting.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but it's a 5-star review even before I got halfway through.
the girls have a unique dynamic that has you squealing with laughter and loving the bestie in your life.
the baking scene was hilarious, I was laughing so much I cried.
the boys are in a unique league of their own and each brings a different card to the table in his own way and they interact with Alice and how they make her fell.
amazing book and I hope to see more in this series.

Brilliant

I started reading this book in the wee hours of the morning, thinking I'd just read a few pages before turning the light off. Well, it's now 6.30am and I've finished it. Could not put it down at one point I was laughing that loud I was expecting my neighbour to complain. Brilliant book from start to finish. I'm hopeful that there's going to be a second book, as I need to know what happens to Alice.

Great story, Alice is sassy, independent and gets things done. The Michaelson brothers are Hot! They compliment each other personality wise. Their businesses are awesome, different with the Gro-Ops incorporated. What would you do to save to save your family business? Alice did everything she could and then some! I loved this book and hope there will be more with Alice and the Michaelsons.
