Elmer's Friends is a book that tells the story of Elmur, a multi-coloured elephant who is the 'brightest of all the elephants' and follows his journey through meeting his friends. He first comes across a Zebra and notices his striped exterior. He then meets a Giraffe and acknowledges how tall the Giraffe is going on to say "No one is taller than you". Further on into Elmer's journey he comes across a Snake, Kangaroo, Mouse, Lion, Owl, Polar bear and Leopard and realises how each individual animal has certain characteristics or physical traits that reinforce their individuality. It is this uniqueness within each of the animals that helps to unite them as friends.
The book itself purveys a very positive message of how everyone is special and unique in their own way. The book may be considered to be more applicable for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) because of its simplicity, however this does not make it any less appropriate for Children in Key stage one or Key stage two. The visual images within the book and sentences make it accessible for any child within the EYFS stage, regardless of their ability range. Using this book as part of 'guided reading' is one way that this particular book may be used in a class. However, there are other ways that this book can be used in the class too. It can be used as an example of showing 'good values' and respect to other children within the class. Certain themes such as those of identifying animals or colours can also be used within the EYFS and even Key stage one phase.
Overall, I find that Elmer's Friends is one of those books that every child should have the opportunity to be able to read, whether through guided reading, individual or classroom reading. The book has so many positive aspects that can help to support children in their learning.

This is a popular and familiar book for children in EYFS. Elmer takes us through the book introducing us to all his wonderful friends and describing them. It finishes with showing us how all of Elmer’s friends are different but they all love Elmer. This is a colourful book that can be used to encourage discussion at circle time, covering issues such as we are all special (we are different in some ways and similar in some ways), accepting and respecting other. This book can also be used to address and tackle bullying issues. Also fantastic display work can be produced using Elmer as a theme.

In this book Elmer the Elephant says Hello to his different animal friends, saying something about how they are different. It shows that although everyone looks different they can all be friends.

Very simple, very bright. May be too simple for all but the youngest, but still potential to act etc

We've been reading Elmer books for years. Now we get to gift them to our grandkids. So much fun to give a book about Elmer when my husband and son are Elmer III and Elmer IV...for real!
I highly recommend these fun filled stories about the adventures of Elmer the Elephant, they are filled with compassion, kindness, and acceptance.

Nice little, simple board book that teaches kids about different animal attributes from tall and small, long and loud, to wise and bouncy. For a couple of the animals patterns and colors are also discussed. I certainly enjoy the adventures of this multicolored elephant.

Not much story here other than an cute patchwork elephant greeting his equally adorable pals.

I guess the real question is why I'm expecting more depth from a child's board book.

In this board book comparisons are made as Elmer goes to visit his friends. Elmer is the brightest, giraffe is the tallest, snake is the longest, and so on. Nicely illustrated.

Bright colours in otherwise simple illustrations and a simple text engage very young children.
