Rate this book
Mewranters: Attack of the Sea Monster uniquely blends adventure with an engaging fast-paced writing style to present readers with an action-packed story of wits, wisdom, and sheer force of will.

Every Mew in the country is out to kill Perry, and the sea monster is calling him out to the sea. Therefore, he must quickly learn why every Mew is threatened by the existence of an eagle Mew if he is to stand a chance at saving his parents and killing the monster. On the day of his initiation, he shifts into a huge Golden Eagle. However, this is a bad thing since no eagle Mew makes it past the age of twelve. To complicate his life, his shifting into an eagle Mew has reawakened the sea monster. A tentative partnership is formed between the different clans. But when Perry Johnson realizes that this partnership could mean the death of his parents, he has a decision to make.

With every Mew in the country out to kill him, and the sea monster calling him out to the sea, Perry must quickly learn why every Mew is threatened by the existence of an eagle Mew if he is to stand a chance at saving his parents and killing the monster. If he fails, it may very well be the end of his family… and the rest of the world. This fast-paced story, with its intriguing plot and original fantastical world, keeps every zoo-going, animal-loving kid wanting more as they follow Perry’s adventure.

Writing has always been my passion. When I was twelve, while my mates still flipped through picture books and comics, I took an interest in thick-sized, picture-less “story books” that opened me up to a whole new world of possibilities and adventures. However, I did not publish my first book until my second year in Pharmacy School when I’d usually learn about drugs in the day and write fiction in the night.

I love writing because I relish the power it gives to create a world of my own where anything and everything is possible. I guess this explains my proclivity for the fantastical.

Mewranters: Attack of the Sea Monster by Kachi Ugo is the story of Perry Johnson, a boy who wakes up on his twelfth birthday to an austere coming of age ritual that only a child who is also a Mew - the protectors of the planet from fantastical creatures unknown to everyday humans - would have no choice but to participate in. Having barely skated by as just average his whole life, Perry is pushed off of a cliff during his initiation and takes the surprising form of a giant golden eagle to the shock and horror of his parents and clan chieftain. With the reawakening of a sea monster, Perry is thrust to the center of warring clans he does not know, a monster he doesn't have the experience to defeat, and the probability of consequences that may likely prove fatal to those he loves most.

Mewranters is a unique work of fantasy with all the right elements to engross younger readers and their parents, as Kachi Ugo has crafted his storyline to reach a wide audience in the genre. Perry's mediocrity makes him a comfortable character to identify with and root for, particularly as he grows into who he is meant to be and what he is capable of achieving. Ugo writes in a crisp, clean voice that provides an uncluttered narrative without detracting from the books tension, authentic dialogue, and lifelike creatures. I'd recommend this book to those who a looking for a fresh twist in youthful fantasy, packaged up nicely as a coming of age story that the whole family will love.

Kachi Ugo's Mewranters: Attack of the Sea Monster follows Perry Johnson, a twelve year old boy who, like the rest of his family, is a Mewranter:

“Mews have existed since the dawn of time...We are like a force for good, preventing evil from growing rampant in the world.”

Perry only knew that his family was special, but just how special they were was the shock of a lifetime. His first test is to learn his aerial form and, morphing into a giant golden eagle that brings with it an immediate danger to himself, his parents, his clan, and coincidentally, also to a rousing monster who Perry alone is meant to face off against.

It took no longer than the first page of Kachi Ugo's debut novel to become hooked into Perry Johnson's world in Mewranters: Attack of the Sea Monster. The build up and climax were as worthy of a read as all great fiction, but I loved the premise of an “average Perry” having (quite literally) the weight of the world on his shoulders and reading along as he (again, literally) rises to the occasion. As a mother I found the theme particularly stirring and relatable, a feeling that was heightened as I saw my own teen daughter become happily invested in Perry's plight. Ugo has wrapped up a tale into a spellbinding world that drives the plot through land, air, and sea, breathing life into the unknown and laying the foundation for what a parent and her child would hope to be the start of an excellent series.

3.5 stars

Mewranters was a fun read. There's people that turn into birds, a sea monster that attacks, and... that's pretty much it. I liked Mewranters because of the action and the middle-grade-esque plot, which isn't a bad thing; in fact, middle-grade is one of my favorite genres, so don't think of this as a bad thing. I liked this book; however, it was so short that I felt there could have been a lot more pumped into the story if it were even just 50 pages longer than it was. If there were more to this short novel, it would get four stars from me.

My biggest concern was the ending-- Mewranters spends its time leading up to the giant fight between Perry and the sea monster, and the climax starts and finishes in what seemed like ten pages. I was a little disappointed in the fight scene, but on the other hand, it's all written pretty well. The action is thoroughly described and the characters are developed well all throughout the story. I think that Mewranters' high point is the writing style, in fact.

The plot wasn't unique, but I still liked reading Mewranters: Attack of the Sea Monster. I would recommend this book, even if it's not one of the more popular middle-grade series. It has the same feel as them, though, and that's what made me enjoy it overall.

It's Perry's birthday and he finds out he himself is a Mewranter. But the other mews are threatened by him and he needs to survive. This is a great middle grade fantasy book that is full of action and great characters. It is a bit of a coming of age story if you were a sea-monster. I am giving this a 3.5 star rating rounded to 4.

I personally love middle-grade books. One of my favourite all time series is a middle grade series. With middle-grade books I just adore how easily the writing flows off the pages and how I don't really have to overthink things.

This book is about a boy named Perry Johnson. It starts off with Perry on his birthday, knowing he's about to take a test he will most likely fail. Turns out he's a Mewranter just like the rest of family. If you love sea monsters, birds and action filled fights this is definitely a book right for you.

I'm going to be honest though and say that this could've done better with more editing. Might have made the story much better in the end. Especially the fighting scene could've been longer and would've felt more realistic to me.

Also recently been in a bit of a reading slump but today is the day this book comes out so I wanted to finish it and review it so I quite literally pushed myself to read this one in like two days.
However, even with my slump I really enjoyed it and it's quite short so if you're into short books like me since I'm all over the place sometimes be sure to pick it up some time.

A coming of age story the entire family will love - this is written with clarity and magic that even very young readers will understand and appreciate for all of the values that Ms. Ugo teaches here. Lots of adventure for little Perry and which force him to make choices that may put his loved ones in peril. Keeps you on the edge of your seat to see if he has the courage within him to defeat the monster he didn't expect to encounter. A lovely fantasy depicting that even in the darkest of situations, choosing to be brave and face the monsters is the strongest asset you can have.

Mewranter is a story of Perry Johnson, who when wakes up on his 11th birthday knows something is going to happen, a ritual to be precise. A ritual about which he knows nothing but knows his siblings totally nailed whatever the ritual is. Being average for most of life Perry desperately wants to give his best in ritual. However, after ritual his life turns upside down.

I absolutely loved Mewranters. In terms of story, book was quite predictable but what made this book awesome was the universe building, it is not difficult to notice that author put great efforts in building this universe and his efforts were evident and flawless. I as a reader I need proper reasoning for everything that results in some kind of twist or turn and here I got perfect reasoning for every incident.

Perry Johnson is very relatable character, who is fedup being average. I particularly like the fact that here protagonist is a timid kid. He is scared and confused. He wanted to save the world but his life is in threat too. James is the only other character which I like.

Book was fast paced and author has successfully created a tension and suspense in story which will keep reader on edge wanting more. Although, there were few aspects of the story which according to me were not needed. I just hope there is a sequel as I really want to be a part of Perry Johnson's journey.

Perry is a young man who finds out quite unexpectedly that he is a Mewranter, a shape shifter who finds out he can turn into a bird. And not just any bird - an eagle. Mewranters protect the world from the monsters that humans believe only exist in books and movies. But why are other mewranters trying to kill him? What is the giant sea monster that has appeared off the east coast? And what - if anything - does Perry have to do with it? Follow Perry as he learns more about who he is and what his purpose is on earth. With the help of his family, and friends Sarah and James, find out if the balance between good and evil can be restored.
I read the entire book in one sitting. It is by far the best young adult fiction I have read in a very long time. Kachi Ugo doesn't talk down to his readers like so many of the authors I have read, and he doesn't just throw in random things to legends we already know (I'm looking at you, sparkly vampires). I have read voraciously since I learned how at age 7, and this is the first book I can remember that deals with shape shifters in this manner. I like how the author actually believes teens know the meaning of words, or that they at least know how to look up definitions. I had to look up the meaning of the word "gleeds" myself. He writes as though teens have read further than basic chapter books. Kudos! I like this book so much that I have recommended it to my local library for purchase, and I will be purchasing it as a gift for my niece's 15th birthday this month. I will be looking to read more of his books. Excellent book suitable for anyone aged 12 and up.

I wanted to love this book. It started off fantastic and completely sucked me in. However, my excitement was premature, as it seemed to stall around the 15-20% point. I think a few more rounds of editing could have elevated this story from mediocre to amazing as well as resolving some of the plot inconsistencies, grammatical errors, pacing and tone.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.

From the description of this book, I really thought that I would love it. Unfortunately, I found the writing style to be very stilted and lacking detail. There wasn't enough world building and the dialogue between the characters didn't seem realistic. It felt more like an outline than an actual book which was very disappointing because it has such potential to be a great story.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Magical adventure

This is a great story, and it brings to life the character of Perry. He's an interesting character, on an adventure. He has a purpose, to save his parents from a sea monster, but only if he transforms into an Eagle. It's a wonderful fantasy with hints of action and the strength of the characters, but no only the protagonist, the antagonist as well. A well-written tale of adventure and conflict with the sea monster.
