But Roak soon finds out that while he is the galaxy's preeminent bounty hunter, it is now his turn to be hunted. And the hunter coming for him is a force from his past that he may not be able to escape!

A good read. Definitely would have been better if I hadn't started reading the series from the end, though 🤦🏻‍♀️ 🤦🏻‍♂️

These are nice facepalm emojis. I hate the word emoji. Instead of girl and boy facepalming, we have the girl, twice, with gender signs so we can imagine their proper genders. Gods bless emoji creators. I hate the word emoji.

How come that every single time when I think I know what I'm doing it turns out to be the other way around?

Here's the usual train of thoughts: Wow, look at this book. Nice! I'd really like to read it. *Looking at the cover* I think I recall reading something good about "a Roak" once. I'm totally jumping on this, yeah!

And I'll completely miss the fact that there are three whole books before it...

As the matter of fact I did indeed read good things about Roak before and I did want to read it. Just from the 8 million Gods damn beginning 🤣

Still, it wasn't such a big deal, after all. Reading felt like a standalone book and if weren't for Goodreads I wouldn't even notice it's not the book #1. There is an obvious backstory which sets things in motion from the first minute but nothing that would obviously indicate missing required knowledge in order to enjoy this part.

And enjoy it I did. Roak is a badass 😎

Not entirely Bruce Willis / John McClane badass,

although that was my first impression (and last), but throughout the book, he was behaving more like a lunatic hell-bent on revenge:

Yep, something like a Warhammer Inquisitor.

Anyway, the picture is far too graphic for what we're offered in the book. We only know that Roak has light and power armors and that's about it. Though which one he wears has zero bearing on the amount of destruction he'll cause. It's a summer blockbuster "Expendables VII" in a nutshell.

Roak is a mercenary known for being a go-to guy for crap jobs that no sane merc would even consider. He gets shit done and gets paid premium credits.

His intel guy, Bishop, betrayed his trust and ran away with all his money. Think millions of credits. Dozens of millions. That's a lot of money 🤑

Although Roak didn't plan on retiring any time soon and all this money was just a number, the betrayal itself hurt. And showing a weakness is bad for merc business so stubborn Roak turned the galaxy upside-down to find Bishop.

In the end, as expected, he did find him. And, also as expected, the voyage to the finish line was filled with Roak behaving like the Inquisitor above, purging the unclean. And everyone else. Fun times, yeah 😄

It was a non-stop action, non-stop fighting, the good kind of bad jokes and lots of sarcasm. I loved it all.

And once more, as expected, there's a huge twist at the end. Worked pretty nice. Perhaps people who followed the natural order of things, and actually read the first three books before trying this one, would see it coming. Perhaps not. I do not care. Still liked it.

I generally like the way Bible writes. It's simple, enjoyable, and straight to the point. Wehrlen is also standardly good, as I've come to expect of him, so the entire book is a breeze. Particularly awesome was the voice of Hessa, Roak's sentient AI. Lots of burn jokes. Love her.

Hessa, on a bright and sunny day.

All things considered, strong 4* for all.

I liked the book and I'll surely pick up the series one day, properly, from the beginning 😅

May be worthy of note that the Agent Prime, Denman Sno, is the character from this universe. Looking at Bible's series, they all seem to be interconnected in this huge freaking universe! Will take forever to read through 😲

Disclaimer.
I had requested and received audible version of this book for free from the narrator, in exchange for an unbiased review.

What I liked about the book -
I feel like I shouldn't even have to review books that are written by Jake Bible and narrated by Andrew B. Wehrlen. This one is possibly third or fourth such book that I've listened to and this one is a blockbuster too. There's not a single minute in this book that I didn't like or thought "this should've been chopped off on editing table." Every moment in this audiobook contributed to the plot and moved it along. There's no dull moment. It's action packed from start to end. And of course, it has a fantastic story to tell. If you have listened to the previous books of the series, you can dive right in. Or else, I would suggest reading those first for the sake of continuity and for your own entertainment.

What I disliked about the book -
Nothing specific that I can think of.

Narration -
Can narration by Andrew B. Wehrlen ever be bad? I have never came across any book where his narration is bad or even mediocre. He breaths life into whatever he narrates.

Amazing! Easily my favourite of the series so far. Finally, some secondary characters that don’t die - which is awesome because I love them. I’m happy in particular, that Yellow Eyes gets to be a continuing part of the storyline. Not only is he a super cool creature/character, with amazing physical capabilities, his personality is equal parts endearing and hilarious. Roak has finally gone from working as a single entity, to a man with a full team of friends (although he would never call them that) that can help him with his next (self-appointed) mission. Waiting for the next book is going to be torture.

If you are looking for a science fiction story where the gas petal is always held to the floor, “Paradox Slaughter” is one of the many “Roak: Galactic Bounty Hunter” novels that gives the listener a full action experience. The story is written by Jake Bible and the audiobook is expertly narrated by Andrew B. Wehrlen. This is the third book in the Roak series which I have reviewed of the four currently available. I have never once been disappointed when I’m looking for a book containing a solid story and heavy amounts of fighting. It should be noted, if you are one who steers their ship away from graphic violence, I would recommend you take a pass on this book; and series. If instead, you like your science fiction stories rather gritty and dark with over the top violence, this book, and the full series, is for you.

Roak is a man who has issues with revenge and demands payback no matter the outcome. What better person would you want to be a bounty hunter as his day job. He is not someone you would want to bring home for dinner, but if you found yourself in a dire situation, Roak will be the one to get you out. The books is a bit of Star Wars, Blade Runner, and Dog the bounty hunter combined into one. What amazes me is that Mr. Bible is able to create new and exciting adventures and worlds that all feel familiar to the listener, yet they are fresh and different with each story. The author blends in some new creatures while a few of his trusted friends (those that survive earlier adventures) are still at his side; including his trusty and snarky Artificial Intelligence (AI) “Essa”. We are given a view into newer and more exciting technology and weapons; never a bad thing. Always one of my favorite aspects of these stories. Roak has not matured much over the previous titles, he is still a man who mainly thinks of himself or his chits; often at the detriment to his limited number of friends. I feel sorry for anyone who has Roak on their tail, he is relentless I his hunting. Yet, his main nemesis, The Bishop, remains at large.

What I enjoy about this series is that it is predictable in its ability to be unpredictable. They always open with a bang and there are times of story building, but I find I’m always surprised at the number of twists and turns the author is able to weave into them. Even though the books in this series are rather gritty and gruesome, there are times where one is presented with an emotional turn. Often, these come at a time you did not expect. Even though the fight is often non-stop, the author is able to make each encounter fun and exciting. The listener has to wonder how Roak will get out of the current situation he is facing. His character feels a bit like James Bond and a little Dog the bounty hunter blended together. Although Roak may seem invincible, the author gives him enough vulnerability to always keep you wondering if he will survive a given fight.

This story is a bit different from the others in the series as Roak needs to partner with others in a hope to accomplish his goal. This is both different for him, and at times quite humorous as an outcome. I liked this change in direction for this book and look forward too many more to come. For those who like this series, it is clear from the book’s ending that the adventures of Roak and his friends will continue. There will be more in the series as the book leaves a few of the story plots open.

Let me turn your attention to the book’s narration by Andrew B. Wehrlen. I really enjoy listening to this narrator when it comes to the science fiction genre. He is able to voice the many different characters using unique voices that allow the listener to easily distinguish them from one another. Mr. Wehrlen has a rich and clear voice bringing the book’s characters to life. The audio was crisp and clear of any defects. The recording was professionally produced, which is what I now expect from a narrator of this level and skill.

For parents and younger readers, as with the other books in this series. There are vast amounts of vulgar language, gratuitous violence, and a fair amount of sexual content. I would not recommend this title to any but mature readers who are not easily offended.

In summary, if you are looking for full on action space story, the Roak series, and this book, will keep you on the edge of your seat. When I see something written or narrated by this team, I want to pick it up and give it a listen. If you are a fan of others in the series, it is a no brainier that you will want to spend a credit for this one. If you are new to the series, I would recommend you give this or others in the series a try. Well worth the listen.

( Format : audiobook )
"Still alive is how I know I'm winning."
Betrayed and robbed by his old friend Bishop, Roak continues his rampage of slaughter through the galaxy in his search for him. Fast and furious action from the very beginning, with even faster dialogue, replete with humour. The characteristics are superb, the interplay between the main protagonists a thing of sheer pleasure, in particular the ongoing snipes between Roak and his (very independent, with attitude) ship's A.I.
All is performed to perfection by the rapid, slick and perfectly matched-to-text reading of Andrew Werhlen, the voicings of every character suited to them and distinct. The ideal pairing of author and narrator.

At my request, I was freely gifted a complimentary copy of Paradox Slaughter (so aptly named) by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. It so involved me that, caught up in the story and the marvellously immagined aliens and action, I stayed awake all night to listen rather than interupted the reading.
Roak's quest, though altered, will continue. This reader, for one, looks forward to it with great anticipation. Highly recommended to all S.F. and action fans. Or anyone with fairly eclectic tastes.

The Roak series continues to be fun to listen to. Roak is a tough, though not invincible, character who is constantly in the midst of chaos. In this story, however, he learns that he may not be able to complete his mission, one of vengeance rather than seeking a bounty, without help. He is forced to do something he is loathe to do, rely on others.

The plot of this book has Roak traversing the galaxy more than any of the previous stories. Aside from the opening of the first book, he also takes his worst beating. But more importantly, his character undergoes some significant changes. First, he is out for revenge, a mission that doesn't pay well. He also confronts his past, which provides us with a few details about his younger years but opens up new lines of questions. The plot is strong, the dialogue alternates between terse and funny, and Roak grows as an individual. This series keeps getting better!

This review is for the audiobook version.

Roak is a bounty hunter who works alone, except now he isn't working alone. Roak now has a crew and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I always enjoyed the way he survived against impossible odds on his own but now he has help, and he needs it.

Roak likes chits, a lot! So when his chits are stolen he follows the thief. Turns out things aren't as simple as find the thief, beat him up, get the chits back. But the for Roak nothing is ever simple...

This was an action-packed, blood-soaked adventure. Great fun! I look forward to the next one.

I received a free copy of this book and chose to write a review.

Roak is on the hunt and this time nothing will stop him, his loyal friend, if Roak can be said to have friends has betrayed him and taken his chits. Every book before this was just a warm up and now the galaxy will pay until Roak had his man.
Step in new characters and new twists and we also find out some more about Roaks past. What can I say this is the best book Jake Bible has done yet.
Narration ever reliable from Andrew Wehrlen is 5 stars as usual and I have missed his familiar voice of Roak.

Roak returns, still looking for his chits, stolen in the last book. On a rampage across the system, he is killing anyone connected with Bishop, who cannot give him the answers he wants. As usual, nothing is ever as it seems in Roak's world! This is the best book so far, as we learn even more about Roak and his mysterious past. Hessa, is joined by addition new crew members, as Roak is forced to adapt in preparation for going to war!

A quick book full of action. This is a bit of a setup novel for future stories but it is still good on its own. I look forward to the next Roak book!
