About the author

Eric Carle was an American author, designer and illustrator of children's books. His picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first published in 1969, has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies. Carle's career as an illustrator and children's book author accelerated after he collaborated on Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?. Carle illustrated more than 70 books, most of which he also wrote, and more than 145 million copies of his books have been sold around the world.
In 2003, the American Library Association awarded Carle the biennial Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal (now called the Children's Literature Legacy Award), a prize for writers or illustrators of children's books published in the U.S. who have made lasting contributions to the field. Carle was also a U.S. nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2010.

Een echte klassieker. In 1 dag uitgelezen. Het vingerpopje is geniaal. Je kan ermee echter maar tot 5 tellen, omdat op het einde Rupsje in een (1) vlinder verandert, in de plaats van nog een zesde fruitsoort te introduceren.

This story is about a caterpillar who is very hungry and goes around taking bites of everything. There is only one character and it is the caterpillar, this caterpillar seems very eager. The illustrations are very simple, mainly containing the caterpillar and the food that he is eating. I really enjoyed how engaging this book was and it kept you wanting to know what was going to happen next. I feel like this book would be used for preschoolers and kindergarten. It could be used for counting or showing the use of repetition with how many things he eats. You could also use this book for a special occasion if you were to have snacks in the classroom, making it a fun activity.

I have always loved this book and the finger puppet version is fun with a little baby. My baby liked the sharp contrasts and bright colours of the fruit shapes, and enjoyed playing with the puppet. I missed the ice-cream and the cake from the normal version. When I first got the book I thought the puppet was a bit scary, but over time, I have become accustomed to it and it scares me no longer.

Een mooi boek voor de kleuters met mooie kleurrijke afbeeldingen.
Daarnaast is het een leerzaam boek waarin de kinderen leren tellen, maar ook oorzaak-gevolg relaties kunnen leggen. Het boek is goed te gebruiken als educatief lesmateriaal.
Zeker een aanrader om in de boekenkast te hebben bij de kleuters en voor thuis!

Cute book for 1-3 yo that teaches kids familiarity with numbers and fruits through Eric Carle's famous content. The hungry caterpillar is a finger puppet placed at the right spot every page to eat through a fruit. Sound effects recommended.

The version I have is now tattered through heavy cardboard binding getting munched away, even though this is a 2010 published book.

Another variation on the Hungry Caterpillar - this time a finger book. Flo loves the fact that the caterpillar’s Head could wiggle and much through the fruit just like the book. There was an audible groan of disappointment though when, after only five fruit, the book ended.

At first I thought this was a silly overly-simple book, but my baby enjoyed looking at the colorful fruits. And I enjoyed making voices and playing the caterpillar, saying "yum yum" and eating the fruit.

2. This is a wonderful story . Best of all, the text is very simple as are the illustrations, so the book will appeal to toddlers as well as the pre-K and kindergarten crowd. In fact, it may appeal more to toddlers, because the story is so very simple and to the point.

3. Critique
A. The illustrations in this book are always fantastic. It is the brief story of a caterpillar's feeding frenzy before he makes his metamorphosis into a butterfly. The book introduces children to the days of the week, the names of fruits, and numbers as the caterpillar eats through different foods each day --two pears on Tuesday, three plums on Wednesday, etc.-- until he finally weaves his cocoon and emerges as a beautiful butterfly.
B. Carle's bright colors and clever die-cut artwork never cease to entertain even the youngest child, and there is surely nothing in nature closer to magic than the emergence of a butterfly. This is a beautiful and fun book that will enthrall any child.
C. Caterpillars are really like what they say they are in the book " Hungary" .

4. This was one of my favorite books when I was younger. It has very bright colors and that makes the book more enjoyable. I enjoy reading this book it is a very good book for kids because it has good illustrations and colors. It is also something that really happens in real life so kids can relate to it.

This is a book I STILL enjoy reading after three kids and using it every year in a spring unit in a ballet class I taught. I've read the story, acted the story, danced the story and used finger puppets for the story. It also translates into beautifully into sign language. Although the younger ones sometimes would get impatient with the eating part and I'd have to skip to it growing and becoming a butterfly.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar in a soft book forms presents a perfect opportunity to refine motor skills in addition to promoting the child’s skills of print motivation, and print awareness. Of course we all know about the original "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" but this book takes it to a new level with finger puppets in each page. The book is about a caterpillar as he eats different amounts of different foods on each page. It is a great way to introduce numbers and now allows children to physically get involved by putting their finger in the puppet on each page!
