This is quite simply the best body and beauty book of all time, despite the fact that it was written in 1976. Part of its strength is that it isn't pushing a particular philosophy, product or celebrity, but is just jam-packed with helpful information, much of which is still relevant today. The info includes: lists of vitamins and minerals and their sources, how various parts of the body work, sets of well-diagrammed exercises (each in an easy-to-follow double page, and including yoga, bed exercises, classic exercises, isometric exercises, sculpting exercises, water exercises and various others), hair treatments and styles, makeup use for various face types, recipes for home-made toiletries and perfumes, meditations and loads more. Admittedly some of the recipes are a bit outdated, but just swap their lanolin and lard for your shea butter and coconut oil and they work very well. Surprisingly little else has dated, and the whole is illustrated with delightful covers and cartoons from Vogue magazine through the decades. Avoid the diets though, which give one more of a shudder than an appetitite - steak tartare, anyone?! I do the exercises, I make the toiletries (with those adjustments mentioned!) and I use much of the information. It's really been a wonderful, useful book for me, and I haven't found any other to match it. You might be able to fnd the info on the internet, but it would take ages and be less charming. Here it's all in one place. Recommended and well done to Bronwen Meredith.
For a book written in the late 70’s it is pretty informative. Written mostly for a female reader, it’s still interesting enough to cover various aspects of the body and aesthetics.
