The Fox family returns from Scotland to find Sugarbury Falls mourning the mysterious death of a young college student. When teenager Maddy’s friend Robby is accused of the murder, Emily and Henry try to clear his name. After all, they’d do anything to help their newly adopted daughter. The more they investigate, however, the less certain they are of Robby’s innocence. With a detour leading to a long buried family secret, the path of the investigation is convoluted and dangerous. Can they clear the course and arrive at the truth, or is it too late?
I thought that the action, and mystery conclusion at the end of the book where a little rushed, but overall the story is interesting and the characters are fun, I’ll definitely be checking out more from the series
I liked this book because of the characters and the detailed mystery. There were a lot of suspects which made the book interesting. It was the first book I read in the series but I didn't feel like I was missing anything. Seeing the mother and teenage daughter grow in their relationship resonated with me.
It is no secret that I like Diane Weiner's Sugarbury Falls series. It is my favorite of her two series. I have been remiss in posting this review. I finished the book as soon as it came out because of course, I wanted to be one of the first to review and then life got in the way. I want to apologize for this being so late.
I have grown to love the main characters in this series, Emily, Henry, and Maddy. They are likable and I think the adoption story resonates with many. Not only is this mystery set in the idyllic cozy town but it weaves a tale of a family secret buried which endangers the lives of the entire Fox family.
If I can't connect with the characters in a mystery and I don't begin to care about them as any series progresses then I lose interest. A reader will not lose interest in this series. If you haven't read the first two books, A Deadly Course and Murder of Course then I urge you to buy the set. You won't be disappointed. I have Clearing The Course five stars.
I liked the characters who interacted well with each other. It was an interesting mystery that had twists in it that kept me guessing. I haven't read the first two books but still enjoyed it.
I'm a big fan of this series and Clearing the Course did not disappoint me. The characters in this family have their own unique styles and the author has done a wonderful job creating each one of them. The Fox family are still settling in after adopting their teen daughter. As if life isn't difficult enough, a murder shakes up the small town and leaves the family in a precarious position. I like these books because the characters feel real. When I read a book by Diane Weiner, I know I'm going to be in good company.
I volunteered to read and review an ARC of this book provided by the author.
Emily and Henry Cox are living in a small town in Vermont. Emily is an author of crime mystery books and Henry is a retired doctor who works part time at the local hospital. They love to investigate murders when they happen in their town. When a young girl is found dead in the lake and her ex-boyfriend is the only suspect their adopted daughter Maddy beseeches them to help prove her friend's innocence. We more suspects are uncovered and more people are being killed it becomes a confusing whodunit that keeps you turning the page to the very end.
This is the first Sugarbury Falls mystery that I have read so I am not familiar with the character, but it still works very well as a standalone.
The Fox family return home from an extended trip to Scotland. Unfortunately, they miss one of the town's important holidays, but it was during this holiday that one of the college girls was found drowned in a nearby lake. Ruled as a possible accident at first, it became increasingly possible that Robby, a young man that Maddy befriended, may have murdered the student. Emily and Henry try to help clear his name, mainly for Maddy's sake.
This is a well written mystery, with good well rounded characters. I really like the ambiguity that Diane has instilled into the adopted parent-daughter relationship; it is always difficult to deal with moody teenagers, but I would imagine much harder when the prickly child is not your own - how far can you push your point, how heavy handed can you appear before you are accused of being controlling instead of loving. I think Emily Henry and Maddy have found a good working boundary against which they are able to slowly build a strong relationship. I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to more of her work. I received this ARC but my review is my honest opinion
The family returns from a vacation in Scotland with their adopted daughter. To find a young teen funeral they didn’t know how at first. Then to find it was murder, which upsets the town. I liked the plot and the characters as though one knew them.
A lockbox, a silver chain in the family Bible, an ace of spades card, and a village mystery. All this on top of a serial killer working out of the regional hospital. How does it all tie together?
I know this is writer's procitive and without spoiling the book. Emily and Henry could have easily broken the old gate. As we are both parents, if our child is sick, one parent always stay or trade off.
I really enjoyed this book. This is book three in the Sugarbury Falls Mystery series but the first book by this author that I have read or listened too but it won't be my the last, as it was a lot of fun. It didn't matter that I started with book three and I had no problems working out who everybody was and there connections because it was nicely written. I liked the fact that so much was going on with this story and every time I began to suspect someone something would happen and I changed my mind. The characters were like able and I liked the family life it was just the right amount and enhanced the mystery as opposed to taking over, I especially liked working out the meaning of the clues on the treasure hunt. As for the mystery there was plenty of suspects and I liked how it played out and kept you guessing at not only who the killer was but also the motive. I will be keeping an eye out for more books by this author. The Fox family return home to the sad news that a local teenager that they know died while they were away. There is a question over what happened, was it suicide? Murder or an accident? She was an experienced swimmer and her friends claim she wasn't depressed, which leads the police to examine her body more closely. When the police start to take a closer look at her ex boyfriend Roddy, Maddy begs her adoptive parents, Emily and Henry, to hire a lawyer and clear her friends name. Things don't look good when evidence starts to pile up on the boy and an eye witnesses comes forward. Can Emily and Henry keep him out of jail? Then a nurse is hurt and a doctor is killed, what is the connection? And does that mean Roddy's name is cleared? Things start to point to a connection at the hospital And the killer hasn't finished yet. At the same time the Fox's also find a box hidden inside a wall, with strange items inside. In order to help distract Maddy from here worry over her friend they start following the clues, which leads them to investigate Henry's family and the secrets they held. Will they be able to solve both mysteries. I liked the narrator and thought she did a good job bringing the characters to life. I was given free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
While I appreciated that this book was quite as cluttered as the previous ones, I just found the entire book boring. I trudged through to the end though, in hopes it would get better. Unfortunately, I just don't care about the characters (especially Maddie- whom I found rude, disrespectful and at times, plain mean. She was quite an unsympathetic character). While the editing was pretty good, with the exception of one obvious error, that wasn't enough to save this book. And the series for me. Others may find this their cup of tea.
This was another great mystery by Diane Weiner. There is never a shortage of suspects and suspense from her books. The murderer is never who you think it is and I love that. Very complex and unpredictable storyline that kept me guessing throughout the entire story. Number four will be just as intriguing, can't wait to start it.
After reading Sugarbury Falls book one and two I'm hooked on this series. Book three did not disappoint, the story line was believable, the characters felt like old friends and like 1 and 2, 3 was a cliff hanger! Ordering 4 right now!
Who killed Damari and why??? Artificial Insemination??? Our daughter used that and we have a lovely grandson!!! I enjoyed this story and recommend the book.
