Although the book is a revisitation of Hurst’s original memoir “She’s Still Here”, I appreciated how she altered it for the younger generations. I’m closer to her age, so I wasn’t the target audience for this one. But, I found her anecdotes funny and motivational; I definitely could’ve appreciated a book like this when I was a teenager battling against my spirit and my flesh. I really liked how relatable she made it and can easily see youth Bible study groups using this in their curriculum. I do wish she’d delved a bit deeper into her own insecurities from childhood and how they impacted her as an adult for better context, but again, still a great book. 4 stars!
Good book to read with your teenage/young adult daughters, but I struggled with the very beginning where she says, "You are the author of your own life story..." I know, I know, context, but it just swayed my attitude to the rest of the book.
Each section was packed with powerful, profound prose on life lessons we've been told plentiful about over the years growing up. But sometimes, all it takes is another person to recount these lessons through her own perspective, expressed through a unique combination of words, all derived from her own individualized life experiences, to once more, refresh our perceptions of these timeless lessons. Also, it helps that the reader was in a despairing life-pickle to receive these tips humbly and with a welcoming heart.
I think every young girl, but even some women, can benefit from reading this book. While I'm an adult, and have already learned many of the things discussed in this book, it serves as a good motivational reminder to keep going and doing what you feel you are meant to do non matter how difficult things feel sometimes.
I didn't realise that this book targeted teenage girls until I realised the anecdotes seemed very much about camp and school. However, I enjoyed this book as a middle aged woman. It was refreshing and it applies to any age.
This is one book I’m very glad I got a hard copy of, rather than an ebook. It’s even a hardback! Ha!
In all seriousness, though, Show Up for Your Life is just a beautifully produced book. I love the glossy cover, and the teal text and blue illustrations throughout … so much fun. Delightfully feminine.
Each chapter features a quick summary, reflections, and Bible verses – a great recap and prompt to move forward.
The one thing I would note: Hurst writes several times about how we are the authors of our stories. I would add … God is the ultimate author, and it’s critical that we (and I include myself in this) commune closely with him to make our stories good ones. I’d almost rephrase it more that we are coauthors with God. Hurst’s statement initially read to me as though God wasn’t part of the equation (though he very much is, and the rest of the book certainly–thankfully!–indicates that as well).
This is a great read for teen and adult women alike. I certainly wish I’d had it in junior high and beyond; thankfully, I can still apply takeaways now and in the future.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
By far one the best books I've read this was right on time for life sewed and knitted together perfect for the girls who have become a woman who feels that there is no purpose for life Thank u Crystal
