After finishing the fight with the Acceleration Research Society, Kuroyukihime and the other members of Nega Nebulous have finally found the resolve to face the White Legion, Oscillatory Universe!
In preparation to challenge White Cosmos, they know that a peace treaty with the Green Legion is something they must have. In order to hold talks with the Green Legion's Leader, Green Grande, Haruyuki heads toward their home base located in Shibuya, but the one lying in wait for him there is...Kuroyukihime in a swimsuit?!?
A slower paced volume as the cast takes a breather from the long Metatron arc and setting up the new plot threads to confront the ultimate antagonists. This book is a welcome reprieve from the lengthiness of the previous arc, taking the time to develop the new additions to the cast a bit more, as well as the regular stalwarts.
As a consequence, it tends to jump on a bunch of different plot threads, some seemingly out of nowhere, but Kawahara Reki eventually does manage to tie most of them up nicely in a way that contributes to the overall picture.
There's even the inclusion of a small side-story, wrote to commemorate the anime adaptation in Japan, that recalls the heydays of Kuroyukihime which is something that's still sorely lacking in relation to how hyped her past was.
Accel World volume 17 Cradle of Stars is a volume that largely focuses on giving us a time out from the action of the Incarnate System Study Kit arc and allows us to see our favorite characters live out their middle school lives as middle schoolers should. There are reflections on the school festival of a few weeks ago, stress over final exams, concerns about the next school year, student elections, and how to spend summer vacation. Lastly, as the cover shows, there is even some fun in the sun/pool.
I like this type of volume to give u time to catch our breath because it always has some bit of backstory to explain Negabu and it always provides some insight into the future of the world. This volume does that but also goes a step further, it includes two backstory chapters for both Haruyuki and Kuroyukihime.
I also liked the tease of the next part of the main story. It will be interesting to see how the writer handles the next step in the take down or the assault on the Acceleration Research Society.
Overall, I liked this volume and do believe it did its job well giving us some time to relax with our characters.
As other reviews have mentioned, Vol 16 ended a major arc, and Vol 17 does a great job not starting another major arc but having a slower pace story development. It ties in some characters and plots from earlier, as well as shows again Haruyuki's growth from when he started.
It does have a side story at the end which was prob about a 3/5 star story-- it's not great or terrible. My issue with the side stories is that they aren't anywhere close to the current timeline chronologically so it feels like 'what's the point' although this side story does introduce a rather important character in a new way.
Overall, not his greatest book-- just a book to get through to continue the series.
Super short slice of life volume, wrapping up previous arc and launching the next one. It includes a side story at the end, not bad, not great. Overall a pretty average volume
