Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
I was actually tearing up a bit around Son Goku's first meeting with Taopaipai, Goku's climb up Korin's Tower, his training with Korin, and a bit into the rematch against Taopaipai. Dragon Balltruly begins here!
It's interesting to consider the balance between levity and gravity in this new turn for the manga. Till now, we've probably had no real deaths, unless we count Grandpa Gohan. Son Goku may or may not have killed any foes, but whether he did isn't seen to have any real magnitude. Taopaipai's defeat of Blue is to show this new enemy means business. His murder of Bora hits hard, not necessarily because we've had enough time to care about Bora or Upa, but because Goku decides to fight more seriously, and to gather the Dragon Balls for a noble purpose, the resurrection of Bora, which will happen soon (contrast Oolong's wish for panties earlier...). So, Goku is defeated by the Dodon-pa, and goes on to train with Korin, completing his training much faster than Kame-Sennin did three hundred years ago. When Taopaipai returns to grab the last Dragon Ball and fight Goku again, the severity of his threat is dampened by Goku's absurd new strength. (While I don't think Toriyama had planned it this far, in retrospect we might say Goku experienced his first Saiya-jin Zenkai boost from his near-death experience.) As the two exchange blows, both show a serious side, but as they receive blows they often lapse into "gag" faces. Taopaipai's pride is even diminished to the point of nearly cheating, using a capsule-summoned sword for a moment to try and catch Goku off-guard. This whole battle is integral to the evolution of the manga as a whole, since Piccolo Daimaou would similarly be surprised at a new power-boost for Goku, but will show stronger resolve himself, and Raditz and Vegeta will later prove unbeatable for an even-stronger Goku, requiring assistance from his allies....
Before Taopaipai, the Red Ribbon Army weren't very tough opponents, and the same especially continues to be true now that Goku is stronger. After defeating Taopaipai, Goku heads toward the RR base to gather their two Dragon Balls. He kicks almost everyone's ass. Some soldiers are said to have run away, and Commander Red himself is dispatched by , which leads to a little battle between Goku and a mecha-suit, and we'll end up seeing a similar machine in the near future (not in this volume). Somewhat notable: Goku uses his Kamehame-ha against Taopaipai in their first battle, which only serves to destroy Tao's clothes; Goku is knocked unconscious by a Dodon-pa that was mostly tanked by the Dragon Ball in Goku's shirt. These are the first major, serious uses of ki attacks against individual opponents, discounting Kamehame-has in the earlier tournament as more a display of strength than a killing technique. Goku would make more liberal use of the Kamehame-ha in his storm against the Red Ribbon base, but only against machinery. Machinery operated by people, who are caught in the explosion, and whom we might assume were killed, just as we're currently meant to believe Taopaipai is dead, but my point here is the Kamehame-ha is still not something to be used lightly.
I forgot about Bulma, Yamcha, Puar, Oolong, Krillin, Muten Roshi, and blonde Lunch heading to the Red Ribbon base to help Goku. The actual speedrun through the base sticks out more in my memory, so I guess it slipped my mind the other characters came by so as to become audience to Goku's massive display of strength, though a little too late....
The seventh Dragon Ball appears to be hidden from the Radar's scan, so the gang must contact Baba Uranai so she can use her fortunetelling to find it for them. This leads to a short arc with Goku, Krillin, Yamcha, Puar, and Upa fighting against a few "classic" monsters, including a kickboxing Dracula, an Invisible Man, and a Mummy. Humorously, Krillin is knocked out of the fray early on, with Yamcha having more of a highlight; Krillin will become a more prominent fighter in the future, while Yamcha basically retires.
(Goku never interacts directly with Red, so it's neat that the new Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero film has Red's son take revenge. Well, I guess it's a little more complex, since Magenta wasn't out for Goku's blood, so much as he just wanted to conquer the world where his father failed, and in theory an Ultra Instinct Goku may have made shorter work of Magenta's forces, but that's neither here nor there, and I'm glad we got more power for Son Gohan and Piccolo....)

EDIT: I (somehow) forgot to mention this when I wrote my review the other day, but it's extremely important. A long time ago, sixteen years, I think, my cousin and I had something of an inside joke, a single word followed by a single number: "Volume 9." I don't remember how it went, but I think one of us would just say "Volume 9" and the other would respond with a wink and/or thumbs-up. This was in reference to the ninth volume of the original run of the manga, which contains the chapter (collected here) where Yamcha defeats the Invisible Man. That is, Volume 9 was the volume where we see the clearest depiction of Bulma's naked boobs. Now, as we all know today, VIZ is the worst company in the history of manga localization (okay, maybe that title actually goes to the old "CMX" imprint of DC...), so contemporary releases slap a bra on Bulma, just as they rip Mr. Popo's lips off. I think this censorship actually happened shortly after my cousin and I started worshipping Volume 9 as an idol, as I recall grabbing a copy of the volume off the shelf at a Waldenbooks to prop it open to The Page in order to make passers-by see the titties, but it was censored. I believe my cousin actually went out of his way to order an older printing from eBay. I only currently own the volume as it exists in the VIZBIG version, which I can't remember whether it's censored, but I feel it was....
On aime voir Goku s’endurcir.
