I have three of these coffee table books about the last significant earthquake to this date in Southern California, the magnitude 6.7 Northridge earthquake on January 17, 1994. This one, published by the Los Angeles Times, is the best and most comprehensive of the lot.
I pull these books out from time to time, usually around the anniversary, to reignite some of the memories I have of that day and that week. It is very surprising to note how dated and far removed these images look, especially seeing some of the CSUN students on the street in the aftermath, still dressed in their sleep clothes. It just doesn't seem that long ago, even today.
It is also interesting to note that the 1994 earthquake came nearly 23 years after the last big earthquake in Los Angeles prior to that point--the 1971 Sylmar earthquake (which I also lived through)--and that we're now coming up on 22 years since the Northridge earthquake. The probability of another strong earthquake in Southern California looms a little larger with each passing year.
