A Skunk in My Bunk!

Rate this book
A playful easy reader in the tradition of Dr. Seuss's Hop on Pop that teaches the basics of word construction.

From award-winning humorist Christopher Cerf comes a super-simple, delightfully silly Beginner Book in which the rhymed text and the position of the words on the page teach the basics of word construction. Written in the style of Dr. Seuss's classic Hop on Pop with rhyming words placed directly above each other to show their shared construction, A Skunk in My Bunk! combines phonics and word recognition to make learning to read easy--and fun! With bright, charming illustrations by Nicola Slater, kids will be delighted to read for themselves about a goat in a coat in a boat in a moat, a pig in a wig dancing a jig, a skunk in a bunk, and much, much more!

Launched in 1957 with The Cat in the Hat and written specifically for emergent readers, Beginner Books combine an exacting blend of simple words and fun pictures that encourage children to read--all by themselves.

First sentence: GOAT. GOAT COAT. A goat in a coat.

Premise/plot: Can a Beginner Reader be entertaining and instructional?! Yes! This one features a series of stories all told in rhyme. The stories have a classic, almost vintage feel to them. Perhaps because of the illustration style. Perhaps because these are the same old rhymes that have been used to teach reading forever. (For example, pigs wearing wigs.)

My thoughts: I loved this one. Most of the stories were enjoyable. A few made me giggle. I loved, loved, loved the one starring a skunk! This is how it begins:
SMELL YELL/ “My bunk has a smell that’s so bad I could yell!”/ SMELL TELL/ “Why does it smell? I don’t know. Can YOU tell?”/ SKUNK BUNK/ “There’s a skunk in my bunk!”/ BUNK STUNK/ “THAT’S why my bunk stunk!”

A Skunk in My Bunk is a very good concept picture book for rhyming words as well as using rhyming words in sentences. The book takes us through multiple scenarios, with different characters including people and animals who may be eating, sleeping, bathing, or driving, and it starts out with rhyming words. Those words are put into sentences to make sense of the situation and why those characters and words are being used. The words are fairly simple and can be understood by kindergarteners and possibly even younger, and I chose this book because it can be fun to read aloud to a classroom and it can be good to lead into a lesson plan about the concept of rhyme words and how you can use them in sentences. I also just liked the book a lot and how it was put together! I thought the book would only be about a boy who found a skunk in his bed, but it wasn't really that at all so it was a nice surprise. I would recommend this book for students aged 4-7.

Using rhyming words from various word families, this beginning reader creates wacky phrases and silly sentences in the tradition of Dr. Seuss.

In an impressive feat of multitasking, this beginning reader entertains while teaching common vocabulary and phonological awareness. Words from the word families -oat, -ish, -ig, -ub, -op, -uck, -ell, -unk, and -ight are featured. I particularly liked how the vocabulary words were listed at the top of the page for each section, and they are arranged so that the letters of their common spelling pattern are aligned to clearly show that same letter combinations are present in each word, making the same sound. Something as simple as this can be the key for a struggling reader to understand the concept.

This book was a pleasant surprise! Delightful and entertaining and will no doubt become a beloved “first reader.” The rhyming (so important in early literacy) and the wonderful illustrations draws the reader in! This one will be read over and over. I highly recommend for your child's classroom teacher, your own family, and friends!

Fun book. Has a great rhythm to read aloud. I did have to practice reading it several times to get the cadence right in some spots. Have to add some extras rests between words to keep the rhythm going right. Once I figured that out for some of the pages that didn't flow right, it was fun!

Super cute...the back of the book was my favorite reaction to one having a skunk in their bunk. This is a great read-aloud book so share with your friends!

Though I probably do not appreciate the rhyming as much as other reviewers, I do appreciate the retro-style illustrations, made modern, by Nicola Slater.

I love how it preps you with the rhyming words for the page before it gives you the sentence.

Like Hop on Pop, this introduces the rhyming words and then uses them in a sentence. Some sequences are more interesting than others.

"Delish" is not a word.

My kids love this book, and they think the author is the next Dr. Suess. The words are simple and fun to read out loud with your kids. “Boat. Goat. Coat. Moat. Float. The boat with the goat in the coat in the moat does not float.”

Kids will have so much fun reading this Beginner Book and finding out about a pig in a wig dancing a jig, and a skunk in a bunk. This is for parents who want to instill a love of books and reading with their children. A Skunk in a Bunk is a great place to start!

A very fun book that is Seussian in tone; another trip back to when I was younger (for some reason I always like reading books for children during the summer). I can see this book being a favorite of mine when I was a kid. So be careful - don't let a skunk get in your bunk over the summer!
