A Galaxy Unknown #12

The Invasion Begins

Rate this book
When Space Command learned the Denubbewa were responsible for the destruction of two Scout-Destroyers in G.A. space, new weapons & tactics were developed to take on the only enemy yet encountered who had weapons that could penetrate the Dakinium plating used to cover the hulls of all Space Command warships.

Since the Denubbewa had attacked without first making a declaration of war, the order was given to destroy every Denubbewa ship found in G.A. space without warning and without mercy.

The new weapons and tactics ensured that Space Command would be victorious, if only they could locate all of the Denubbewa ships before the enemy managed to establish a foothold in G.A. Space. When an enormous armada was discovered in Region Three, Space Command dispatched all available ships to engage the overwhelming force.

Despite the odds, the Space Command force was victorious, but they knew this was not the end of the war. Space Command Intelligence has learned that the Denubbewa military have hundreds of thousands of warships, staffed by trillions of mindless cyborg slaves ready to die on command for their masters. The arrival of the armada was merely a final test of a wormhole technology advancement, and the ships sent ahead would be waiting to join the full armada when it arrived.

When I read the previous book Changing of the Guard it felt like the whole story was about setting the scene for the next installment. Although this book was better and had a little more action, it still feels like we waiting for the real story to begin.
I also found it quite annoying that the book ended on a cliff-hanger with yet another ‘Denubbewa’ fleet just disappearing.

The book is filled with wierd dialogue filled with an extreme amount of explainers that make no sense what so ever in said dialogue. I'm not sure if the author thinks the reader is "slow" or just can't help himself. I'm not certain if the author has gotten worse on this or if I've just read books with better dialogue in recent years and thus more used to this not being such an "issue".

To be fair, this is a pet peeve of mine so. But it in my opinion it just destroys what could be a rather ok story.

This is the 12th book in the A Galaxy Unknown series and I still like these books although I have to admit that I did like the first half of the series better than the last couple of books.

In the first books there was a clear protagonist to root for and the stories were much more centered around the adventures of this hero. Now there are really a bit too many people and too many threads to follow for my taste. The author even cloned the main protagonist so we now have three of them for Christ sake!

Having said that the books are still good. It is not exact hard core science fiction in that much of the technology is very much fiction and not so much science. It is still reasonably well kept together though and the ship to ship action is not too far out in the land of fantasy. On the subject of action the book is fairly well balanced between action and more quiet segments.

Despite the plethora of people of interest I quite like most of them. We are not talking about very deep characters here, these books are fairly simple after all, but they make for a pleasant read nonetheless.

Sadly the book ends in a bit of a cliffhanger. Not the totally ridiculous Hollywood style kind of cliffhanger but a cliffhanger nonetheless. A bit annoying actually.

Speaking of annoying, I wish the author would stop this silly Kindle boycott of his. I do not understand it. He is talking about Amazon requiring exclusivity but I know plenty of authors that have their books on Kindle as well as elsewhere. It is just so annoying to have to buy somewhere else, download and then either read it on a different reader or take the hassle of uploading it to Kindle as a personal document. Of course Kindle’s reading progress sync doesn’t work on these books as well.

Anyway, an entertaining book. Not five out of five kind of entertaining by a decent four at least.

The books ok, just a shame it all ends as a cliffhanger rather than completing its story in one book.

I was eagerly anticipating this installment of AGU, one of my favorite series; but the writing has degraded. The story is great! The series is Awesome!
The problem is the author's strange change in prose. He has written multiple great books, but for some inexplicable reason his dialogue style has changed. Instead of his previous fleshed out characters with interesting conversations that you want to read, we get monolog info dumps in the guise of conversation. Some of these are multi-page long! It just took all the momentum out of the story.
This isn't hard science fiction. He didn't need to explain the alien boxes in exhaustive boring detail, multiple times!

Still, the series is great and I plan to purchase the next book. After that????

Time to call it on this author. His homepage hasn't been updated in three years. No news of any kind anywhere can be found.
I think he died. There will be no new books in this series, or anything else by him.
