On some days, you are no less than Sherlock Holmes. But on others, you are just a regular policeman on bundobast duty. Me against the Mumbai Underworld is the story of Isaque Bagwan, three-time recipient of the President's Police Medal for Gallantry and a small-town boy who pursued his big-city dreams and ambitions as an upright police officer. Bagwan, who is credited with carrying out the first encounter in the history of Mumbai Police, was witness to several of the city's defining moments-the 1980s when smuggling was at an all-time high, the blasts that tore through Bombay in the '90s, the gang wars that marked the city, and the devastating 26/11 terror attack. His life, which has captured the imagination of many writers and filmmakers, is presented here with all its gut-wrenching details.
My faith in police has been restored after reading this book. The author was just a mid level officer but he remained active in the field solving crimes in Mumbai with brilliant policing, net of informer's and repulsing efforts to buy his connivance. Written in simple English with short readable chapters it's not recommended as a literary effort but a downright Street level honest narration of police work which includes empathy and support for the people approaching a police station.
I ordered this book to get reality about many surve encounter. This book provides rwal insights about underworld in 1980s n 90s. It also shows how the bagwan sir had worked honestly in his entire career. It's a must read for all IPS officers and those who aspire to become one. The police force really needed hard-working and honest officers like isaque bagwan.
Overall the book is not mystifying or scintillating as such. It is a documentary of events that has happened in the writer’s career and life. Most of the incidents are the true and the non-spiced/non-faked versions of the story written in Dongri to Dubai and the movie “Shootout at Wadala”.
A wonderful book that goes deep into the Mumbai underworld and some memorable events of the history. It's really good to read the story of a highly dutiful and dedicated police officer Isaque Bagwan written by himself with so much precision and clarity.
An engrossing, true account of retired braveheart cop ACP Isaque Bagwan, this cop memoir is truly inspiring, motivating and gives you a glimpse at the risky lives of Mumbai cops. Many Bollywood movies have drawn inspiration from life of braveheart cop Bagwan sir. Be it Ajay Devgan from Singham or John Abraham's role as cop Yashwardhan in movie Force, all onscreen cops are reflection of real life daring cops like Isaaq Bagwan and countless brave officers. This book is an eye opening detail on the crime history and the struggle put by Bagwan sir to bring these criminals to justice. I am just done 50% reading of this book and I can't hold my emotions to share my views on this book. From his journey in Baramati as a young boy to his becoming a courageous Mumbai cop is an inspiring story for every aspiring youngster who desire to enroll in Indian Police Service. The full review on this cop memoir will soon be updated once I complete this book.
An authentic and eye opening account of the Mumbai underworld and single-handed actions of a great Mumbai cop Isaque Bagwan who was both daring, thoughtful and totally honest.
Book is written as a collection of various events/encounters in his police carrier and reads like a breeze/page turner. It also shows that there are some great and truly exceptional police officers in our country.
I did meet the author at Pune LitFest and proud to have his autograph and picture with him.
A good read for anyone interested in Mumbai underworld or in the story of a good, honest and successful cop.
Experiences of a police officer with the Mumbai underworld makes an interesting and informative. He talks candidly about the way police, politicians function and honest officers suffer. Also some officers who support the honest. How sometimes he is made a scapegoat for no fault of his and victimised by transfer. He brings out the importance of informers and how he cultivated them. If only the tribe of such honest and efficient officers are more in the police force!
