Measurement and Assessment in Teaching, 10/e

M. David Miller, Robert L. Linn, and Norman Gronlund

Measurement and Assessment in Teaching, tenth edition, introduces the elements of measurement and assessment that are essential to good teaching. In a presentation that assumes no previous knowledge of assessment or measurement, the text provides crystal clear step-by-step instruction on such topics as constructing test questions, aligning assessment with learning goals, and interpreting standardized tests.

The tenth edition includes:

Significant coverage of the Standards Movement and No Child Left Behind legislation

For example, see Chapter 1 for discussions of the changing context of testing and the assessments required to meet state and federal mandates.

Detailed, straightforward guidelines for how to construct test items with many concrete examples

Step-by-step Checklists and Guidelines are provided to help students apply content.  These provide quick reference guides for how to write items, provide feedback to students, and more.  (See, for example, pp. 60, 179, 212 and 321.)

Coverage of both formative and summative assessment and of all practical aspects of classroom assessment teachers need

Including informal assessment procedures like observation (Chapter 13), methods for constructing objective test items(Chapters 7 and 8), measuring complex achievement (Chapters 9-11), assessing portfolios (Chapter 12), grading (Chapter 15), and evaluating published tests (Chapters 16-19).

I had to read this one for a grad class on educational testing. It informational overload. I get the purpose and don’t necessarily have any issues with the content. It was just a burden to read. Would recommend to someone who has a vested interest in the nuts and bolts of test analysis.

Well, it's a lot of information --- some of it helpful --- but it's delivered in a very dry style. Hard to read and keep one's focus.

This is a textbook, so naturally it was very dry and information-heavy. Additionally, I find measurement and assessment to be a rather boring topic. However, it is an important topic that is integral to teaching. Therefore this was a very useful text, and it should be noted that it was very well-written. This text covers topics such as the role of measurement and assessment in teaching, its context and uses, the foundations for assessment, what kinds of assessments there are as well as what purposes they serve, and the reliability and validity of assessments. It also goes into specifically when and how to perform assessments, as well as practical information on how to construct fair and well-written tests. I found this text to be both broad enough and specific enough, which makes it very useful.

Again, it might be boring, but it's great information presented in a highly satisfactory manner.

Required reading for my grad school class, I found this book laborious to read, being distracted by so many typos, grammatical confusion, and even 2 chapters with the same chapter number in the heading.

I did get through it, though.

Hate the class, hate the book, hate the prof. The only good thing about him is that he doesn't give any homework or tests... which is why I'm still in the class.
