D'Entremont, a writer and photographer for Lighthouse Digest and webmaster of New England Lighthouses (http: //lighthouse.cc), has meticulously updated this dramatic, romantic history. For lighthouse fans and lovers of New England lore, it is a must.
Edward Rowe Snow was an American author, lecturer, and historian. He spent most of his life studying the legends, lighthouses, and islands of New England. He wrote many pamphlets, books, and articles, and made lecturers and tours throughout the area with his wife.
I love lighthouses. I am thoroughly enjoying this book. I started reading this book last year but aborted it due to moving. I am trying to finish it before moving again.
Every good lighthouse story has a storm attached and there are plenty here for any avid reader of sea stories. The book starts from Maine and moves southward to Connecticut. I have been fortunate to go on a few lighthouse cruises from Boston Harbor and have seen and photographed many of the Massachusetts lighthouses mentioned and been to a few in Maine. My goal is to see as many as I can. I have a more detailed Lighthouse book to take with me when I travel.
Edward Rowe Snow is a well known authority on the lighouses of New England, having been the original flying Santa who brought Christmas gifts to the lighthouse keepers and their families. This is a must read for lighthouse fans. It is a good idea to join the Lighthouse Preservation Society as well.
Done with this now. Been done with it for a few weeks before I moved to China. Have another lighthouse book I brought with me.
A detailed historical overview of significant lighthouses from Maine to Connecticut, with engaging stories of the lighthouses themselves, their keepers and families and the isolated lives they led, shipwrecks and other disasters, and so forth. The book includes photographs of most of the outlined lighthouses. Definitely worth a read by anyone interested in maritime and/or New England history.
