The virus CO-D4 rages across the globe with debilitating effects. Authorities, scientists and medical personnel scramble to find a cure. Those who fall victim to the virus, experience a fast and insufferable death and then they come back.
Chaos erupts and the world moves to the brink of extinction until the realization that a cure is not the answer, containing the crises is. The virus is not just a pandemic, it’s a war. The battle is on, front lines are drawn and mankind holds the upper hand. Controlling the victims before they rise is the only way to stop it.
But Doctor June Mannis doesn’t believe that. She sees something else in the victims … hope. She is a lone soldier in a private war that will prove to be either insanity or humanity’s turning point.
Initially I tagged this in the 'hum-drum' another zombie story, particularly as I didn't connect right away with the protagonist, a female doctor, wife, and mother of 3 young kids when a flu-like zombie epidemic breaks out. The writing and the pacing seemed hurried, and I wanted to feel more emotion, experience more of the surroundings, immerse myself into the world that only seemed half built.
But I lost that feeling about halfway through. Something shifted for me, and I finally found myself lost in the story. You know how that feels. That's why we're addicted to reading.
Solid plot and with a couple of twists in the plot. The characters were pretty well written and I liked the concept. I read 1 and 2 and i will probably read the next book
I'm sick. It's a chronic autoimmune disease that is incurable. Only the symptoms can be treated but sometimes, even medications don't work. Mostly it is a slow downhill race filled with pain and a quality of life that Slides lower and lower. Some books are like this but speeded up high gear. We don't die of course but sometimes you wish you would. Vascular Dementia is something I have to look forward to unless I Stroke out and die. My biggest fear is losing myself with dementia. My Mother is slowly dying from the disease too. I understand her agony in her bones and body. How do you cope with this downhill hill race? You live, you laugh and go on hurting. I talk with Mom knowing she is fast losing her self. She gets with me because she knows what she is losing as her brain is slowly being destroyed. I understand her. I cry and tell her I know what she is going thru. We are broken. Doctors often misdiagnosed or dismiss the disease onset. No treatment can kill you early on with organ damage or failure. The medication causes more problems before one is found to slow the disease. Normal aging adds to the disease too. Sometimes the self might survive but the body fails. As you read the book, think of the term fiction it is written under ask yourself is it really? Most stories I use a man-made virus, but Ebola isn't man-made. Listen to the warning about flu able to mutate to something else. Our bodies mutate or are born broken like I was. This story touches on the attitude of doctors and everyone dismissing the early signs of illness. That happens every day to millions of people. I related to this story a lot and recommend it as a great lead-in for the next book. It has the reader shivering and thinking of that what if in our lives...
I chose this rating because all through the story I felt like screaming, "Check your emotions at the door and do what is necessary, dummy!" I hated that such an obviously intelligent character would not only place herself in danger, but couldn't or wouldn't realize that life without experience and expression isn't worth living. Author Drug a definitely got under my skin with the emotions the main character felt for her patients and children. I felt her anguish through Ms. Druga's words and that is why I'll read anything she writes. She connects you to her characters in a visceral way that is hardcore and very rare. If you like apocalyptic fiction in a novella format. Try "Rectify: A Novella."
Another saga well done. BUT, I wanted more, more, more. I know Novellas are so often sweet but too short. Odd & peculiar story of a Doctor caring for the sick as a horrid plague of pandemic proportions covers the world. A mother’s instincts to protect her children is her downfall. There is apparently a final chapter not included with the novella that I must contact the author to see. That’s enticing! Also, now there is a sequel I understand, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. My only objection is, as a mother myself, I can’t believe she would be so stupid as to put herself at risk. Druga is never one to disappoint.
Rectify Rectify #1 Sci-Fi Jacqueline Druga ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really do enjoy Jacqueline Druga's writing style. Although she writes about apocalyptic events, she manages to include real life situations and more importantly, very human responses.
I did like the multiple POVs and I wish the book was longer so that I could read more from Major Tom's POV.
The pacing was great and I finished reading this book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down.
There were a few errors here and there but that could easily be fixed with another round of editing.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. I liked the different approach to zombies, how they're created and the research that Dr Mannis was doing.
A well-crafted zombie (but not a zombie) story. The book is really about how different people respond to societally seismic events in different ways. Sure, there are 'zombies', head shots and human munchies, but the real action is in the exploration of how people react and what they value.
There are various spots in the plot when you can see things like a slow-motion train wreck, and you are hoping for the best and thinking 'don't do that' but can see all the tragedy coming (and no more so than right at end). I really enjoyed the finale in this book. Scientist has a problem; scientist finds a kind of solution to the problem (the hard way), scientist ... (no spoilers here).
I had a long Covid – my health meant I had to avoid people more than most and, even when the danger had mostly passed, I had an elderly family member who continued to need protection from the disease. So, it lasted longer for me than most. So, reading a novella which replaces Covid with something similar only those who die become Zombies wasn't a good idea. “Rectify” depressed the hell outta me. If you are looking for a happy read, choose something else. Pretty much everyone dies. 2 Stars.
Audible:This was a really good 2 book series! There is a virus, then zombies, who are never called zombies.Great characters!I listened straight through with no stops.Andrew B Wehrlen was a good narrator for this series.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
Fascinating characters, loved the fast paced action...but Ms. Druga for the love of all of the un-dead please GET A FREAKING EDITOR!! I always tell myself I won’t continue on to the next in her series but I’m not a quitter and her story writing is fantastic. I just hate having to read and re-read a sentence over and over again to try and figure out what the heck she is saying. It’s so frustrating at times I’ve completely given up on many of her books for days.
Great storyline, a mysterious illness is taking over. Causing a speedy death and a revival of the dead. This story is about a woman Dr and her family. Very interesting
Jackie has done it again. It may be the end of the world but we also see The Human Side. A mother's love for her children ,family sticking together I've never read a book buy her that was not wonderful
The story was somewhat interesting but it was just too hard to read with all the misspellings and lack of editing. Even the names of characters changed at least once. This could be a decent novella if it were edited.
Part 2 is as good as book 1. It's a fast read and totally enjoyable! I hope you, Ms. Druga are writing as I write this! You look like a kind woman and would never leave me hanging in midair???
Pulls you in from the first line and doesn’t let you go! Is a novella so it’s a quick one but it was amazing. I’m already on to book two! Read by one of my favorite narrators Andrew B Wehrlen.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review
Seeing as this is two novellas together, I don't want to say too much about the plot because I'll spoil it!! The first novella is about Dr June Mannis and takes place a few years after the first outbreak. Not much is known about CO-D4 other than people die, and reawaken changed. They call them Cody's. It took them years, but mankind believe they have they outbreak handled and are curtailing the spread. There doesn't seem to be a cure, so it's become law to Rectify (kill) any one affected. Dr Mannis believes that they people infected can retain some of their humanity and there's hope for them. In the second novella, it's a continuation of the first but the MC is Dr James Ung, a friend and college of Dr Mannis. I'm not going to get into the plot of that one because it will spoil the first!!
I'm glad these were bundled together because they were so short! The plot is fast paced and flows nicely. With it being so short I was afraid in case either plot development or character development suffered, but it didn't. All the characters were well written and developed and it was easy to become invested in their story. I really liked both Dr Mannis and Dr. Ung. The plot was unique and intriguing. I liked the spin the author put on the typical zombies. After the ending, I'm really looking forward to the next one to see where the story goes.
Andrew B. Wehrlen reads this well. He is clear and easy to follow and has plenty of tones and voices for the different characters. I always enjoy his performance and this was no different.
I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
Here we have another end-of-the-world apocalypse due to a virus that reanimated the dead. The virus started out innocent enough, but people did not recover. Enter Dr. June Mannis who believed that there was some conscience or spirit remaining of the person within the infected body. She believed this so strongly that she could not let her daughter go when she became infected. This proved her theory to be both right and wrong. Book two follows the spreading virus along with June’s friend Dr. James Ung as he carries on her work. June’s work, now called the Mannis Syndrome is gaining traction and supporters. The books are not long but well written and fast-paced. Andrew Wehrlen does an excellent job as usual. I don’t write reviews often but this was so disappointing that I am/. the lead makes such terrible decisions, one ridiculous action after another. What a waste of time reading
Listening to this story after the coronavirus outbreak is probably not the smartest thing LOL Narrator was pretty good although a man doing a woman's voice always seems to sound ridiculous
