Piotr Sommer is one of Poland’s leading poets. Continued extends and enlarges the achievement of his earlier Bloodaxe selection, Things to Translate, and spans his whole career to date. The translations were made with the help of leading British and American poets, including John Ashbery, Douglas Dunn and D.J. Enright.
I haven’t read much poetry by Polish authors but I really enjoyed Sommer’s exploration of family and local Polish life. His techniques follow an experimental form which I like to use in my own writing
Hard to find language this fresh. Even in translation this outshines most American poetry, overburdened as it is with the unfortunate trappings of poetry.
