This is the sixth in the Lola Just and Ingrid Diesel series, but the first that I have read. This meant that, for a while, I struggled to piece together the story, particularly the references to events that occurred previously. However, once I got into this intense and complex French thriller, I was hooked. It begins in 1998 with a young and heartbroken Geraldine who has lost her father due to an apparent terrorist attack that claimed the lives of many in Damascus. Geraldine refuses an honour and lambasts the French authorities and their political machinations. In 2013, the retired Lola is working on some puzzles when she is interrupted by a visit from Captain Phillipe Hardy who informs her of the discovery of the murdered body of Arnaud Mars. He was a senior police officer who went off the grid, in Abidjan in the Ivory Coast. Mars had in his possession scandalous and incendiary notebooks that belonged to Richard Gratien, a lawyer and arms dealer who is now in prison. Snippets from the notebooks were made public after which Mars disappeared.
It turns out that the prime suspect for the Mars murder is Commandant Sacha Duguin, an ex-police colleague of Lola's and previous lover of Ingrid, and he is duly arrested. The gun used to shoot Mars is Sacha's, but Lola is firmly convinced that he is innocent. As Lola begins to investigate, Ingrid returns from the US. The two of them follow a twisted, dark and murky trail that takes in the major players in the Gratien affair, French and US spooks, until connections emerge to the 1998 Damascus killings. There is a trip to the Ivory Coast, where Lola and Ingrid find that their lives are at risk as they delve into Mars and Duguin's presence there and search for Mars's blood brother, Kaspar Koumba. In Hong Kong, Lola and Joseph Berlin obtain vital information that brings them closer to the truth. There are high level political forces that are ruthless and determined that the truth will remain buried, no matter how high the cost.
There is a strong sense of location in the city of Paris. This is a great series that is compelling, gripping and full of action. The characters of Lola and Ingrid are engaging, colourful and make an impression. The plot is intricate and complex and the story has a fast paced narrative. I highly recommend this series, but suggest beginning with the first one. Thanks to Quercus for an ARC.
I really enjoyed the two previous novels I read by this author: The Dark Angel and Dirty War. This is the third novel featuring Lola Jost and Ingrid Diesel, which has been translated into English, but it is apparently (if my research is correct) the sixth in the series. In fact, The Dark Angel is the first novel, but Dirty War is the fifth and this novel follows very much on from what happened in Dirty War. As such, this is not an ideal book to start with, as events from the previous book feature in this. However, I really wish that publishers would treat readers with a little more respect and translate a series in order, which is the way, I am sure, that most of us would like to read them…
This book opens in 1998 with a young girl going with her mother and sister to reclaim the body of her father. He was amongst some other people killed in Damascus and his daughter, Geraldine, is not impressed with the platitudes of the government officials. We then fast forward to 2013, when Lola Just is visited by Captain Philippe Hardy. Arnaud Mars, a police divisionnaire, who was on the run after a scandal concerning defence contracts, has been found shot in the Ivory Coast. The gun that shot him has been traced to Sasha Dugain, Lola’s former colleague and Ingrid’s former lover.
Lola initially believes Richard Gratien, who appeared in the previous book, was responsible for framing Sasha. Ingrid has left Paris for Las Vegas after a frightening attack and it seems that the previous investigation is still very much shadowing their lives. However, Lola has had enough of shuffling around her apartment in her bathrobe, making jigsaw puzzles, and the case invigorates her. Soon, Ingrid has returned and the two set off to discover the true culprit. It is an investigation which will see the pair leaving Paris for far parts of the globe in their attempt to discover the truth.
Like the previous books I have read by this author, this is a complicated plot and you do need to concentrate on what is going on. This is obviously a sequel to Dirty War and, at least the publisher have printed these in order. However, I do feel my reading experience has been somewhat lessened by reading this series in an incomplete form. I like the grumpy Lola and the flamboyant Ingrid and I like this series, which is intelligently written and well translated. I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Quercus Books for an advance copy of Shadows Sun, the third Lola and Ingrid novel to be published in English.
The skeleton of Arnaud Mars, a senior Parisian policeman gone rogue, has been found in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Commissaire Serge Duguin, former protégé of Mars and close friend of Lola, is arrested for the crime when it is discovered that his service weapon fired the fatal shot. Lola starts an investigation to prove his innocence, ably assisted by Ingrid who returns from Las Vegas to help out. It soon becomes apparent that they are swimming in deep and dangerous political waters linked to some explosive diaries kept by Mr Africa, Richard Gratien, an intermediary in arms deals, acquired by Mars and now in the possession of his killer.
Shadows And Sun has a complicated plot so you have to pay attention to keep up and I would recommend any reader to have read the previous novel, Dirty War, before tackling it as they appear to be parts 1&2 of the same novel. I say appear because I haven't read Dirty War and thus felt lost in some of the references in Shadows And Sun, the biggest being how and why Mars went rogue.
Even though I didn't get all the references or history of the novel I enjoyed it. It is well paced, has plenty of thrills and spills, a little romance and some corny humour. There is a warmth to Lola and Ingrid's friendship which is a pleasure to read although this is balanced by some dark but believable political manoeuvrings, the sun and shadows of the title perhaps?
Even though I hadn't read the previous novels in this series I so enjoyed this Lola and Ingrid investigation. Great story, great strong female characters and set in Paris - I couldn't ask for more.
