The monumental Zizhi Tongjian (“Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government”), a general chronicle of Chinese history, is considered one of the finest single historical works in Chinese. Compiled by Sima Guang, who was known for his scholarship in several disciplines and prominence in government, as well as moral uprightness, the collection chronologically narrates the history of China from the Warring States to the Five Dynasties (403 B.C.-959 C.E). In writing these works Sima Guang left behind the traditional methods of Chinese historiography. For almost 1,000 years and the Shiji, standard Chinese dynastic histories, primarily divided chapters between annals of rulers and biographies of officials. In Chinese terms, the book changed the format of histories from biographical style to chronological style, which is better suited for analysis and scholarship. According to Endymion Porter Wilkinson, "It had an enormous influence on later Chinese historical writing, either directly or through its many abbreviations, continuations, and adaptations. It remains an extraordinarily useful first reference for a quick and reliable coverage of events at a particular time."

This book has the misfortune of being read by me after I've already consumed a large amount of warring states material including various pieces from the Zhan Guo Ce, television series, and of course the various anecdotes of figures like Mengzi, Xunzi, and so forth that contain the episodes noted within this text. There's a certain boredom that comes from already experiencing and knowing something, and that's what I felt when I was reading this. Three Kingdoms material also suffers from this for me.

The Warring States period has the additional trouble of being much more murky and vague in nature than the periods both before and after it. The Han Dynasty is very well detailed, and the Spring & Autumn as recorded in the Zuozhuan is one of the legendary pieces of history, the piece that inspired this piece after all.

The translation has an issue with not having been proofread properly. There are issues with verbs and tenses here and there that are distracting but don't prevent the text from being readable. Some of the decisions like the choice to list the ruler of a specific state for a specific year are very useful and helpful as a resource. The year by year nature of this text also illustrates just how few records of certain years exist compared to the Zuozhuan before.

As a piece of history, this text on the Warring States could never have compared to the Zuozhuan before it in quality because of the reduced pieces of evidence and records of events that survived. I think that as a work of reading for pleasure, Mengzi is actually a better way to consume the information on Mengzi than this text.

If someone is purchasing this text, they've probably got a strong passion for the time period and for Chinese history, which means that many of the episodes recorded here they've probably learned about through osmosis or indirectly because they're among the most famous episodes of history, I don't think that this is too necessary a purchase for that reason.

I found the Feng Menglong text: Kingdoms in Peril a much more pleasurable way to consume the overall flow of events that occurred during this time period even for someone who already knows about these events and what supposedly happened during the time. While the Feng Menglong texts abbreviates certain later events and history, it still was a much more enjoyable text than this. I think that because of the murkiness of history in this time period, that the Zizhi Tongjian chapters on the Warring States and Qin are not as high quality as other materials on other time periods are. The fact that Kingdoms in Peril was a work of historical fiction, allowed it to sensationalize a bit more to make the reading of some of these events more pleasurable.

Tầm này năm ngoái, mình từng nói với một người: "Em nhất định sẽ mua Tư trị thông giám, nếu không có tiền thì sẽ không mua các sách khác, chỉ mua Tư trị thông giám mà thôi".

Ngay từ lúc nghe tin quyển Tư trị thông giám sẽ xuất bản, mình đã biết đó là một hành trình dài đầy thấp thỏm của kẻ mê sách. Với mình, đó là thử thách với tính nóng vội, với sự kiên trì của bản thân, mình thường không nhẫn nại với sách. Nhưng hơn hết, đó là thử thách với nhóm dịch, với nhà phát hành và với tất cả những người yêu mến và đang đóng góp công sức vào việc cuốn sách ra đời.

Ở cái thời nay, khi sách hay ra từng ngày, sử bị thất sủng, sách sử "Tàu" càng bị đẩy vào lãnh cung, mà một quyển sử vào loại khó đọc, khó thấm và khô khan như Tư trị thông giám thì càng là loại thất sủng của thất sủng trong tận cùng cái lãnh cung ấy.

Việc dám dịch đã là cái tột cùng của đam mê, dám bỏ tiền phát hành là dũng khí tột cùng của doanh nhân, dù chưa hề biết đến nhóm dịch ấy, mình vẫn xin cúi đầu khâm phục. Trong khi kẻ như mình, chỉ việc bỏ tiền ra mua, mà còn đắn đo không dám đặt bản đặc biệt 😂

Đến tận nay, sau hơn 1 năm, 3 quyển đã ra đời, để ra cả bộ có lẽ còn cần thêm nhiều năm nữa, hi vọng lúc đó dịch giả vẫn còn tâm huyết, nhà phát hành ngày càng lớn mạnh, bản thân mình vẫn còn có thể bớt xén tiền sữa bột để theo đuổi.

Tư trị thông giám với mình là khó đọc. Bản thân có thể say mê đọc ngày qua ngày Sử ký của Tư Mã Thiên, nhưng để mình đọc ngày qua ngày Tư trị thì rất khó. Sách được viết theo thể biên niên, người đọc sẽ đọc theo từng năm, từng sự kiện theo tuần tự thời gian chứ không như Sử ký.

Mình thường dùng nó làm tư liệu gốc, như đang dùng với Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư, đọc các sách khác nghi vấn thứ gì thường đem sách ra đối chiếu, tham khảo. Nhất là thói quen hay đọc trên wikipedia của mình, thấy gì nghi vấn hay muốn tìm rõ hơn thì đem ra tra cứu luôn.

Mỗi người cũng tùy vào nhu cầu mà có cách đọc khác nhau 😶

Nói qua về ngoại hình, ngoài quyển 3 mình chưa mua nhưng đã ướm hỏi thì hình thức không thay đổi nhiều, 2 quyển mình có đúng là tiêu chuẩn cho một cuốn sách đẹp mà các nhà cần tham khảo 😂

Sách được in trên giấy tốt, vàng nhạt, nhưng không xốp, đọc dưới đèn rất thích.

Bìa là bìa đỏ, quyển 1 của mình bọc sẵn bookcare nên không dám chắc nhưng bìa 2 sơ rất tuyệt, cảm giác như bọc vải (chưa dám dùng dao thử) vân rồng mây cực kỳ cực kỳ đẹp, nhũ vàng sang trọng.

Nếu như sau này không có thời gian đọc, mua một bộ về để ở kệ sách sau lưng, chữ vàng lấp lánh, rồng mây đan cài, khí chất ấy ... 🤔🤔🤔
