Wow, this is some creative repackaging... because it's just a graphic novelization of the first Ant-Man movie! *sigh* I enjoyed the first Ant-Man movie, don't get me wrong. I was just hoping this was a new story, and not a retelling of the same one I'd watched.

The art is pretty good, though it seems they chose to draw the characters nothing like the ones in the movie. I know some people are harder to draw than others (see Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics, where artists have widely differing abilities to draw Sarah Michelle Gellar), but when Scott, Hank and Hope all look nothing like their movie counterparts, I figure it must be a choice.

Luckily, I flipped through the book and found there are three bonus comics, so the collection isn't a total retread for me. The first one, though, seems to be a reprint of an 80s comic set - the Mighty Avengers: Assault on a Mind-Cage. It's kind of jarring now to see the super bright colors comics used to use!

The second one is Avengers Origins: Ant-Man and the Wasp. It tells the story of how Janet became the Wasp, and the art is great! Reminds me of some of the Sandman comics... fluid and watercolor-esque, but in dark colors.

The third is a preview of The Astonishing Ant-Man #1. It was okay. I may read it if I come across it, but I won't be actively looking for it.

All in all, 3.5 stars (mainly for the extras, especially the Origin story), rounded down to 3 for the misleading cover/title.

Haven't seen the movie yet, so I don't have the full idea of how this ties in to the movie. The first Ant-Man is summed up in two comics, as per usual, which is a good refresher if you don't want to watch the whole movie again. Considering Ant-Man is pretty low down on my list of heroes, it's a good comic actually, and I didn't even mind the Stan Lee ones they included--I'm curious now if Taskmaster will be a prominent character in the movie. The idea of a villain henchman training facility is honestly genius, and would explain so much if they were really a thing in all hero comics.

These preludes used to have 2 wonderful functions, introduce readers to the comics world and give some backstory that would add to the movie experience. The first Ant-man prelude showed a Hank Pym mission. The Guardians vol 1 prelude showed a scene of Nebula and Gamora growing up. This just re-tells the first Ant-man movie. It does it well but also doesn't add anything- no cut scenes or added motivations.

Starts off with an adaptation of the first Ant-man movie - ok story, decent artwork, but nothing special. Next are a couple of Avengers 80s issues - Ant-man and Yellowjacket teaming up to save the Wasp. The campiness of the dialogue amused me, but nothing else of note aside from the introduction of Taskmaster. My favourite part of the book was the Avengers Origins issue - gorgeous painted-like art, cool story about the beginning of Hank Pym and Janet, as Ant-Man and the Wasp. Finally, a modern Scott Lang Ant-man story which I didn't care much for - while it's the first of a longer arc, it didn't hook me in, and the art didn't do it for me either.

The collection as a whole is a 3, the reprints of Avengers 195-196 by themselves would be far higher. The collection is ok, obviously just designed to drum up publicity for the new movie. The actual main story, the adaptation of the first film, isn’t actually very good. Average writing and art, and poorly adapted. The Avengers reprints are superb, classic Ant-Man and Hank Pym, the Ant-Man Year One is nicely done, and the Nick Spencer reboot I’m on the fence about. A lot of humour in there.
I’ve read better, I’ve read worse. Fair.

It includes a very brief retelling of the first Ant-Man movie (though it’s so scattered that it wouldn’t make sense without seeing the movie) and reprints of four older Ant-Man comics. No new material included, unfortunately.

A fun comic book version of the events in MCU's Ant-Man. It was a lot of fun reading it in this form. I can't wait for the sequel. I hope it's just as fun as the first!
