I never wanted to be tied down. No commitments. No family. Until baby Emma showed up on my doorstep... I was just a man and his boat, wild and free, roaming the Carolina coastlines. I wasn't tied down or bound to anyone. Until she appeared — the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen. Bright green eyes, just like mine. And a smile that melted my heart. Emma, my baby girl, abandoned at my estate in the middle of a scorching day. That was the day my world changed. And the day I needed Maddie more than ever. Maddie's a single mom. She's been through hell. And she's the most beautiful, smart-mouthed woman I've ever met. When she offers to help me through the sleepless nights, I can't refuse her. Soon, Emma isn't the only person I want to cherish and protect. And Maddie is making my nights sleepless in a whole different way. Somehow, they’re becoming the family I never expected. When custody for Emma is in jeopardy — and Maddie's future is on the line, I know I was a man meant to be tied down. And I'll do anything to keep us all together. Low Country Daddy is the sweetest, steamiest beach read you’ll need for the month of June. School is out, the pool is open, and this hot single dad is sunbathing shirtless on his boat. Lexi hates cheating and cliffhangers, so you won’t find that here. Enjoy!
Lexi Whitlow is a small-town girl with big dreams. She spent her early years growing up between Virginia and North Carolina, playing in the dark rich dirt of Eastern North Carolina at her granddaddy's farm. She's a Southern as can be, and she spends her days chasing her five-year-old and her puggle (that's a pug-beagle hybrid, folks) and writing her ass off.
She holds a master's degree in English literature, and her mom is so proud she's "using her degree."
Lexi harbors a not-so-secret love for bad boys. She loves fighters, tough-as-nails cowboys, bikers, and criminals. Her husband is a scientist... but he has the heart of a bad boy for sure. She spends what little free time she has crocheting, painting, and going on long walks with her family.
Jeb is an ex- Marine and is now happily farming for oysters in South Carolina in his business, Sweet Maiden Oysters. Nothing to tie him down until one morning a baby with his bright green eyes is left on his doorstep and he falls in love with her. Emma may be his but he knew nothing about her till now. he has no idea what to do so he needs a nanny and who better than Maddie. he meets Maddie who is a single Mum to Justin, who works in a bar when he goes for food with his friend Stu. Jeb thinks she's gorgeous but he has Emma now to think of and what he is going to do with her plus Maddie must be taken . But Stu encourages him to ask her out and he finds out that she is single and living in an RV. This could be the perfect arrangement for the two of them plus their children if Maddie becomes his nanny! Attraction between Jeb and Maddie develop quickly and things are going so well when... Nope no spoilers form me. Let's just say that this is so much more than I expected and I LOVED this storyline from Lexi Whitlow. This story perfectly illustrates why she is one of the USA's top best selling authors. Fantastic characters and a storyline that is realistic and no cheating or cliffhanger to top it off. I didn't put this down till I'd read it all as it was so compelling. I cannot give it too much praise. I received a reader’s copy of this book and voluntarily leave my honest opinion of it here.

I was granted an ARC of Lexi Whitlow's "Low Country Daddy: A Surprise Baby Romance." I thoroughly enjoyed this book, & find Lexi to be a talented writer. I'm looking forward to the book Lexi writes. I definitely recommend this book to others based upon its own merits. All opinions expressed within this review are uniquely my own & freely given! Until next time... Happy Reading!
What I liked - This book is a unique take on single parent romance novels. I liked both main characters for the most part, and the secondary characters also weren't bad. Maddie is a strong person with recent bad luck trying to make a good life for herself and her son. Jeb ended up being a good dad and was incredibly sweet and generous to Maddie and Justin. Overall, I liked the general story.
What I didn't like - While I liked the general story, I didn't like many details. Maddie was harsh about not letting Justin come with her on the interview. Rose was incredibly cheap and not understanding about Maddie's pay. The book started out with Jeb sleeping with some random woman, and I don't like stuff like that in romance novels at all. Then later he tells Maddie it's been a long time for him and that any rumors implying otherwise weren't true. How long is a long time to him? 2 months? I'm confused. Why does he cover for Emma's mother? Did she ever try to reach him to let him know about Emma? She should be charged with neglect, abandonment, and endangering a child. Why let her off? If he's not a manwhore, why was he leaving a woman's house at the beginning of the book, mention having to do the same thing at other women's homes, and have a baby with some random girl. Gross. Maddie can too harsh, and Jeb can't decide if he's a slut or not. There are some punctuation errors.
My recommendation - It's not horrible, and you might like it more than I did. I don't recommend it, but I don't recommend against it, either.
Jeb Ballentine's father was a mean, volatile drunk who took his frustrations out on his wife. Jeb needed an escape - the Marine Corps was the answer.
While on deployment in Afghanistan, his father died so when Jeb left the Corps, he returned home to South Carolina to help his mother with what was left of their family home.
Hard work and a strong will led him in the right direction and a few years later he was seeing the light of day as the debt that had been pulling them down was being lifted and oyster farming was their saving grace.
About that same time, Maddie James and her son Justin landed in town. She is looking for a job and Flo's Bar Seafood, etc. might just be an answer to her prayers. Maddie is beautiful, smart and prickly as a porcupine - a great combination for a waitress...this just might work!
And so the story begins...
This one is soulful, filled with deep emotion, and wonderful characters who drift through the story effortlessly, stealing your heart as they move through life. Some you will love...and they may feel like family while others evoke fear or darker thoughts. The mix is totally magic and the story feels real on many levels.
There is a lot going on right from the beginning and it doesn't stop until the Epilogue is completed. This is quite possibly one of the best books I have read, ever...and is now holding place in my top ten favorite books of all time.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
If you think this is just a romance, you would be wrong – it is so much more! This is an amazing journey into the lives of Maddie James and Jeb Ballentine. Maddie runs from her life in Indianapolis to Beaufort, South Carolina, to protect her son and herself from an abusive relationship. Jeb has lived in Beaufort his whole life. It’s where his family has their oyster farm, which he has spent the last several years rebuilding after his father died. Although Maddie is reluctant to form a relationship with Jeb, she knows he needs her help when he’s confronted with an unexpected consequence from his past, and so their story really begins.
Lexi Whitlow has written a wonderfully engaging and appealing tale. She effortlessly pulls you into the lives of her characters. The depth of the descriptive language she uses easily draws you into their surroundings, making it feel as if you have been there. The narrative is such an integral part of the storyline that it blends in and flows easily throughout. You can feel the love as it develops between Maddie and Jeb. The emotions are strong throughout the book, taking you to highs and lows, and quite possibly bringing you to tears. Be prepared, once you start reading you will find it hard to put down. I highly recommend this book! It is another must read by an incredible author!!
I am voluntarily providing an honest, unbiased review of an ARC of this book. I also purchased a copy of this book in support of the author’s work.
This book was wonderful it was slow paced but kept you entertained right through, I love a good book that makes you believe that anything is possible if you give it a try and that’s what I got from this book. Jeb Ballantine came home from the war with bad dreams and a passion to rebuild what is left of his home and that’s where Sweet Maiden Oysters are born and after 7yrs they are the best oysters ever produced and are in high demand but his friends think he needs more in his life, his best friend Stu takes him to the club In hopes he will meet someone and sure enough there is a new waitress that’s just started and is a firecracker with a smart mouth and he is interested. Maddie has just started her new job at the club after leaving Indiana from her ex Joe that is very dangerous and tried to kill her and her son Justin, now she wants to live a quiet life here she hopes and then in walk two men and one is as hot as and Maddie is drawn to him but doesn’t know why but with her life in a mess now is not the time for romance. Can theses two torcheded souls find happiness in each other arms and make there dreams come true, through in a baby left and an ex that doesn’t get the message and your in for a great treat with this book. I voluntarily reviewed an arc copy of this book for an honest review.
Wow!! This is not just a love story but a journey of two broken people who find one another and find themselves belonging to the other with pure love and trust. Jeb is a local boy from Beaufort South Carolina who served in the Marines, returned home with some bad memories and working hard day in and out on his oyster farm. Maddie is a woman who finds herself in abussive marriage to a mean drunk of a man. After her husband beats both her and their 7 year old son a very kind policeman gives her some money to get away. Maddie and Justin find themselves in Beaufort and finding ways to make a new life for themselves. Along the way she finds friends, work and even a man who is so much more than meets the eye. One day Jeb’s mama finds a baby on their front step and the beautiful little girl has Jeb’s eyes and birthmark. He finds out quickly he needs helps with raising her and Maddie ends up offering her services and things go from rocky to pretty amazing between them. I loved Justin’s ability to adapt to his new surroundings and how he falls in love with Jeb and this new life! Jeb makes a promise to Maddie and goes above and beyond what is humanly possible to keep it. Will Maddie's past catch up with her and Justin and can Jeb do what is necessary to keep them and the town safe? This is one pretty amazing journey! I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
GRAB THE TISSUE AND COMFY SEAT!!! OMG! I have to say I can't remember crying through one of Lexi's books before. I'm not a cry baby ok? Seriously, this is one read that cuts soul deep. Gut wretching as well as heaven sent. Man, what an incredible gift. Lexi doesn't beat around the bush either. I can totally relate. This is an exceptional read that really takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride that changes the way you look at some things. Lexi weaves a world around you until everything else ceases to exist except this world she's pulled you into. You can go from heartbreak, gut wretching and on your knees one second. The next you find yourself floating and in a dreamy haze. The characters were realistic, intriguing and complex with an electrifying chemistry between the two main characters. The scenes were so vividly detailed and descriptive that it gives the illusion you were right there in ground zero with them. Following the characters along totally absorbed, witnessing their personalities transform and shine. Phenomenal job Lexi, thanks for sharing this magnificent tale with us.
I absolutely enjoyed this book. Jeb and Maddie are such a wonderful couple. Both have had heartache in their lives and are trying to survive and make a better life. Jeb is a former marine and is still haunted by his time in the service. He is trying to make a living in the low country of South Carolina. Maddie has moved from Indiana with her son Justin trying to escape an abusive past. I really like how these two slowly become trusting of one another and their love slowly evolves. I also liked the back story of the oyster farming Jeb does. I like that he may have come from money but he doesn't look down on others. In fact he seems to want to help others and employees people of all kinds. Maddie is a wonderful mother just trying to take care of Justin and be the best mother she can be. These two are so well matched. This is a very well written book and the chemistry between Jeb and Maddie is great. I like how Jeb is so protective of Maddie and Justin as well as his baby daughter, Emma. Grat HEA!
Such a great story! I loved the setting, the quiet and lush surroundings of South Carolina. The author portrayed a wonderful community with hard working respectable people. I liked that Jeb was a cornerstone of the community. His whole being was so deeply rooted in the history and the present of Beaufort. It was simply wonderful. He was a great character. I also loved Maddie. She was a hard working single mom down on her luck but without the slightest inkling of ever giving up. She was a true survivor. She also was a young woman with lots of love to give. At times the prose was wonderful in this book all the other times it was simply great :-) After reading so many insta love or high octane romances Maddie and Jeb's slow burning passion was really refreshing and absolutely perfect. Did I mention the writing was great? Never knew oyster farming could be so interesting! This book was one of my best reading experiences, and all those feelings the story evoked will surely stay with me for a while. Congratulations to the author, great job.
Love Lexi's new book. Jeb deals with nightmares since he returned from Afghanistan and works as oyster farmer now. Maddie and her seven year old son are fleeing from Indianapolis to escape a violent ex. She starts to work as a waitress at a restaurant where she meets Jeb, yet their first encounter doesn't go too well. When Jeb finds himself to be the father to a cute 9 month old baby girl that ends up on his porch, he's slightly out of his depths so Maddie offers to help out until he can find a nanny. Jeb and his mama do employ Maddie as daytime nanny so she can work her restaurant shifts in the evening and she and Justin can move into a guest cottage. Everything seems to look up for Maddie when one day Joe walks into the restaurant. He wants his family back but that's not gonna happen, no matter what tricks he has in store. Just find out what happens when a storm's going to hit Beaufort.
I wish I could give it more stars!!! This book was so deep and so refreshing. It was a slow build up to true romance. Most romance books these days have more sex than romance. This book has a real story. Jeb is former military with bad dreams from Afghanistan and a drunken abusive father. But he is a responsible, caring, hard working, stand up guy. He meets Maddie who is running from her abusive husband with her 7 year old son. She is a firecracker, loving, and wary. Jeb is attracted but she shoots him down when he asks for a date. She likes him though. Their build up is slow. Maddie accepts the job as nanny when baby Emma is left on Jeb's doorstep, Jeb steps in when Maddie has trouble with living out of her RV and offers her and Jason a place to live. Their love is rock solid and they have their HEA. I learned a lot about oyster farming and the low country. Great Job Lexi. I loved it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a second chance romance with an exciting plot, nail-biting action by the hero and a really bad guy to stir things up. Jeb Ballentine was such a man’s man with a strong sense of honor, right and wrong and a heart for those he loved and cared about. Maddie and her son, Justin, had been through so much because of her husband, Joe who was a really mean dude. When Maddie ended up in North Carolina she found a safe haven not only with the people of the area but by Jeb, his mother and all those who worked for Jeb. Low Country Daddy is an absolutely heart melting story with an ending that kept a grin on my face for hours after finishing this book. This is such a lovely story. I receive an ARC for an honest review.
Wow! This book totally blew me away. I was drawn in right from the start and couldn't let go. Setting the scene of two broken people with a strong story from each of them to tell I just couldn't stop reading. It was a totally beautiful and moving story. Jeb and Maddie just completed each other so perfectly. Honestly, this book wasn't what I was expecting, I thought it would be more about Jeb suddenly having his daughter in his life and the story would revolve more around them with Maddie showing him how to be a dad and then they would fall in love. Emma and Jebs relationship didn't really feature heavily as the story was more on Jeb and Justin's relationship which was great and unexpected. I really loved this book.
4.5 Stars This story features Jeb and Maddie. This book is filled with fabulous characters! Maddie and her young son are running from her abusive husband. I love that Jeb accepts her decision to not date him and is ready to hire her anyways. Jeb is a hard-working oyster farmer and ex-Marine who suffers from PTSD nightmares. To say Jeb is an ordinary oyster farmer is so far from the truth. He’s so much more! This author did an amazing research job on what Jeb does for a living.
I could actually picture the scenery as I was reading the descriptions. The action is great as is the sweet romance that just flows easily throughout the story. I can’t wait to read more from this fantastic author.
When Maddie and her son Justin end up at Flo's Bar, Seafood & Etc, she had no idea that the Oyster lovin` town in South Carolina would put Jeb Ballentine directly in her path just when she didn't know she would need him. Trust issues, babies, Oysters, moms, boats, P.T.S.D. Hurricanes, exes, humor, danger GAH --you name it this swoon-worthy instant lovefest has it! Low Country Daddy, not only captivated my attention but my heart as well. The passionate, heartfelt journey Maddie, Jeb, and son, Justin go on is a goosebump-inducing, uplifting humor-laden one that I could not put down! One stellar story I encourage other readers to check out for themselves!
This book manages to cover such a wide range of emotions. To me, it’s not a roller-coaster ride because there’s not a lot of swinging back and forth between the extremes. But the journey this story goes through progresses from one end to the other. When we’re first introduced to Maddie, she’s in a dark and dangerous place. We travel with her while she and her son escape her abusive ex, meets Jeb, and several other spoiler-inducing situations. (In other words, I’m not going to tell you so that you can still enjoy the book for yourself.) Where everyone ends up is one of the sweetest Father’s Day-inspired epilogues I’ve ever read. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book.
Lexi Whitlow grabbed my attention in the prologue and kept to the epilogue. I loved the relationship Maddie and Jeb, I loved how it grew. In my opinion Lexi Whitlow wrote great main characters and great secondary characters. In my opinion Lexi Whitlow wrote a suspenseful, fun, steamy read. In my opinion if you are a Lexi Whitlow fan she did not disappoint. She introduced the villain in the beginning then you don't hear from him till the end. The suspense for me came when I knew he would be back, so she keeps you turning the pages wondering when. In my opinion this is a fun, worthy read. I received an ARC edition for my honest and voluntary review.
Jeb was a marine but now he’s done with that life and now he owns Sweet Maiden Oysters and he loves it. Maddie and her son moved to South Carolina to start a new life and to protect her son from her abusive ex. She starts a job at Flo’s bar and that’s where she meets Jeb. This is such a fantastic read but I won’t give anymore spoilers because I don’t want to ruin the rest of the story. I love the chemistry between Jeb and Maddie and you go through so many emotions with this story and you feel like your a part of it. Thank you Lexi on another wonderful read I loved it. I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
This is a story that has so many emotions as it unfolds. When Jeb meets Maddie, sparks begin to fly, but Maddie and her son are running from an abusive life. Add in surprise baby Emma on Jeb's doorstep, and you have all kinds of twists to a beautiful story. Kind and caring, Jeb is a man so easy to fall in love with as he protects them from the harm that has followed them. As they fall in love, there is a healing for her and her son as they make a new life in the Carolinas with Jeb and Emma. Great storytelling with a depth in their journey to a HEA, I would like to thank the author for gifting me "Low Country Daddy". My opinion is my own. This is mine. 5 Stars!
This is yet another example of the wonderful written books by Lexi Whitlow. Low Country Daddy is a fabulous book with rich characters, depth of storyline and excitement and romance aplenty.
The beautiful scenery, relationships and descriptions of southern coastal life, made for a captivating story, and made me want to visit South Carolina.
The book has regret, torment, love and redemption, and I highly recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
A sweet southern romance. A single mom, Maddie gets away from her abusive ex and makes a life for her and her boy Justin. Jeb is a good ol'southern man who finds himself suddenly a father when his baby girl Emma is dropped off on his porch. Enlisting the help of Maddie these two grow close. But what happens when the ex comes back, and when a category 3 hurricane comes threatening the island. Can these two find their HEA, or will it all be swept away. A must read if you like some southern heat mixed with some Deep South lovin. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Such a wonderful read. Maddie & her son Justin run from an abusive ex all the way from Indiana to South Carolina. There she meets Jeb who is a great guy. She hasn't been treated very nice in the past & is unsure of what Jeb wants. She doesn't trust easily & keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop. Jeb on the other hand is a loner who works constantly on the water for his oyster business. He's not sure how Maddie & Justin fit in his life. This is not your typical romance read, it is so much more. I voluntarily received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
I have read several books by Ms. Whitlow and liked them all but this has to be my favorite. Jeb and Maddie were both wonderful characters. Even though they were both attracted to the other, their relationship wasn't instantaneous but built over time. They built friendship, trust and finally a family. When a threat from Maddie's past comes to visit, Jeb does what any good father would do- protect his family. This one is definitely going on the "keeper shelf".
*I received an Advance Reader's Copy of this book which I am voluntarily reviewing*
When i saw the cover of the book i was expecting a cowboy type romance. Wow was i mistaken! This is a fantastic book with an amazing storyline and wonderful characters. A woman on a run with her son from an abusive man returns to a place where she remembers going on holidays with her parents and being happy as a child. A broken ex marine and oyster farmers life is turned upside down when he falls for the new woman in town and finds himself becoming a father. I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.
If I could give this more than a five Stars I would !!
This was absolutely the best book I have read in a while. I recommend it if you love romance takes and family values! Jeb becomes a daddy with a 9 month old baby girl out of the blue. He was recently in the military , now an oyster farmer and a daddy! Needing a nanny to help with the baby he finds a female who turns out to need a place to live and has a 7 year old son to raise, she also is kind of in the run from her crazy ex husband!! It's a steamy, sexy, and a great read!! Recommend it with 5 Stars rating
Maddie is a single mom who works hard to support herself, and Jeb is happy farming his oysters, until he finds baby Emma on his doorstep. Having a baby that he knew nothing about leaves his needing a nanny, and Maddie fits the bill perfectly. This is a well written flawless story, which had me totally captivated throughout, and I cannot wait to read more from this talented author, and I highly recommend her work for all readers.
I wasn't sure I would get into this book how wrong I was Jeb and Maddie are two people who've had a troubled past an abusive husband is just one of the bad parts I also loved reading about the children Justin and Emma and other characters in the Story it's a slow build up to their happy ending and I loved how the surrounding areas in the story was told I could picture it I can definitely recommend this book. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book.
I was given this book for an honest review! Lexi Whitlow is an author that takes you in to the world of her chats & the places where they live. Jeb & Maddie are the latest. Maddie has escape from her husband Joe, he been through he'll when he hit her & her son Justin. Jeb works on the water of the Carolina coastline when baby is left on his doorstep. This book is about they get through all that is chucked at them & come out the other side.
