A beautiful book with a nice introduction. You all know Bilibin's work if you know anything about fairytale illustration. Contains a broad set of images from across his work and life. My one small (or not?) complaint is that the otherwise excellent introductory text omits page numbers for the images it is discussing. Those would be most useful.

Bilibin was primarily a book illustrator, embellishing the pages of many Russian folk tales with his own particular style of art nouveau, a fusion of medieval and Slavic folk art motifs. He also turned out numerous cover and frontispiece illustrations for books and journals. This edition is a valuable resource for these particular sides to his work and also contains a number of his excellent landscapes (or landscape portraits as Bilibin dubbed them) and examples of his stage design work, most notably for Rimsky-Korsakov's 'The Golden Cockerel'. Highly recommended for the quality of the reproductions as well as being the only English language overview of his work.

Beautifully illustrated and comprehensive volume on the life and work of Russian artist Ivan Bilibin. His work influenced many of today's genre artists.Best known for his illustrations for Russian folklore, he was also a graphic artist and stage designer.
