It's hard to defend yourself when you have memory lapses, and everyone thinks you are crazy. Journalist, Megan Roach, is given a story by an old man in a nursing home that could make her famous. When her carefully constructed life starts to unravel, she is forced to confront her childhood demons and the possibility she could be a murderer. DCI Peter Hatherall uncovers a conspiracy that confronts his own beliefs and goes far deeper than Megan Roach imagined. But can he believe anything she says?
Megan Roach is a journalist working with her University photographer friend, Rob, for a local newspaper. Not quite what Megan had envisaged as a career. Their present brief is to show care homes in a good light after the recent scandals. While packing up the equipment, Megan’s attention is caught by an elderly man in a wheelchair. She was amazed when the man jumped out of the wheelchair and shut the door, before handing her a package, saying he had evidence of a murder. Megan was skeptical but the man was insistent, and Megan was still searching for her big break. What could she lose by taking a look at the package?
DCI Peter Hatherall is very reluctantly attending a pagan wedding with his wife and partner DI Fiona Williams. The description of the wedding is fabulous and, judging by the one I watched at Glastonbury Abbey, it’s pretty spot on and although there wasn’t a maypole it was a sight to behold. Peter is approached by the groom, who’s worried because two of the guests who apparently possess some disturbing information, hadn’t made it to the wedding. He believes they are in terrible danger and wants Peter to investigate.
As Megan tries to make sense of the contents of the package, she begins asking questions about the evidence contained in the included notes, not realising she is at risk of losing her job…even her life. The deeper she digs the more she loses her grip on reality and the more her life spirals out of control.
Megan is portrayed very well as an unreliable character, her credibility is compromised fairly quickly. An incident outside a shop when an elderly man is being tormented by a group of youths seems to be the catalyst for Megan’s instability. She sometimes appears quite unappealing and quite often I found myself rolling my eyes at her questionable behaviour, sometimes wanting to give her a good shake. Given her upbringing it was understandable up to a point, she is quite vulnerable and seems very immature. I did find myself sympathising with her a little more as the narrative progresses.
Meanwhile Peter and Fiona are investing reports of a runaway, as well as the disappearance of Dick’s friends. The plot is well constructed and told from various perspectives, tying the threads up neatly in the end. I enjoyed learning more about Peter and Fiona’s personal circumstances. Both are having personal issues, and Fiona’s final decision really surprised me. Nevertheless, I enjoyed catching up with them both and look forward to more.
I chose to read and review Twisted Truth for Rosie Amber’s book review team, based on a digital copy from the author.
Diana J. Febry knows how to twist a tale into a multi-layered mystery that grabs readers by the throat and hangs on, because just maybe the answers are just around the next flip of the page!
Megan Roach wanted to make her mark in journalism, to be more than a fluff piece writer and her big chance arrives when a mysterious man in a nursing home gives her “the story of a lifetime,” if it is true. If he is real…if Megan can stay alive and sane long enough to unearth an incredible tale of dark deceit. She may need the expertise of DCI Peter Hatherall, a man who has seen more, done more and learned to accept the unbelievable as he digs his way to the truth and justice.
TWISTED TRUTH has that “English” flavor that makes feels just dark enough, just edgy enough to hold readers enthralled to the very end without being over-the-top.
I do love a good mystery that allows me to follow the clues, feel the adventure, the danger and Diana J. Febry keeps those bread crumbs coming, page after well-written page!
I received a complimentary copy from Diana J. Febry!

Twists and turns kept me on my toes to the very end
I've read several of the Peter Hatherall Mystery books and I've come back for more because I enjoyed the previous ones. Happily, this is another brilliant story and more is revealed about recurring characters Peter and Fiona, which I liked. In this episode, a young journalist, Megan, is drawn into an investigative journalism project, and the more she digs, the more she becomes consumed by the unfolding story. A dark and dangerous murder/mystery unfolds and is combined with some clever sub-plots to produce a book that it difficult to put down. Well drawn characters provide great suspects for this classic 'who did it'. Twists and turns kept me on my toes to the very end. Highly recommended.
If you love a good English mystery, you must read Diana Febry’s books! She’s my go-to author whenever I feel like diving into a brain-storming session and try to figure out “who done it.” “Twisted Truth” is the newest installment in her Peter Hatherall series, and just like the previous books in the series, it was impossible to put down. A young journalist Megan Roach was dreaming of a good scoop that would propel her career to new heights. What she didn’t expect, however, was that the story which an elderly man handed her (together with a box containing supposed evidence) could not only cost Megan her career but endanger her life as well. As she starts digging deeper, strange things start to happen, and soon Megan starts questioning her very sanity… The plot was dark and haunting, and the use of an unreliable protagonist technique was wonderfully executed. I admit I was wondering a few times if Megan was indeed simply paranoid and certain events were a mere fruit of her imagination. And of course, I got it all wrong in the end, suspecting a completely different motive from a completely different person. Brilliantly done! I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series!
Megan Roach is a young reporter for a small town newspaper in Britain who finds a murder mystery dropped at her feet when she really wasn't looking for one. Given a tip from a source that isn't terribly reliable nor that she can track down later, Megan finally reviews the information and decides that it might be a career making story. Delving deeper into the mystery of an accidental car crash that may actually have been a murder, Megan finds herself at odds with the police, the rich and powerful, and even her fiance.
This is a fun thriller that meanders a bit and has enough characters to challenge Game of Thrones. So be prepared for that. However, I did find Megan to be an engaging flawed character who gets in over her head. Peter, the lead cop, and Rob, her photograph, have some of the best scenes.
Each book in this fabulous series just keeps getting better and better. Megan, a journalist for a small newspaper is given a tip off about a so-called accident, and decides to do some investigating. This leads to so many dire consequences; she finds herself being stalked, and is not sure who to trust. This is an extremely well written story which had me on the edge of my seat until the very end. I cannot recommend this, and the rest of the series highly enough.
Megan Roach is a journalist working with her friend, a photographer, doing a story at a local nursing home. She is approached by an elderly resident who hands her a package and tells her that it contains information about a murder and evidence of a cover-up. Later, Megan discovers newspaper clippings, a notebook and cassette tape in the box.
Should she take it seriously, or is it the overactive imagination of an elderly gentleman who is possibly mentally frail?
However, Megan needs a break, her personal life is crumbling around her and her career is at a standstill. If the information is true it could catapult her career as a journalist and give her a welcome step up the career ladder.
Meanwhile, DCI Peter Hatherall and DI Fiona Williams are attending a pagan wedding in the woods of familiar characters Gladys and Dick who met in later life. Dick takes Peter to one side and tells him he is very concerned about two guests who should have attended the wedding but haven't turned up. He believes that the gentleman and his granddaughter are in great danger.
The book contains subplots, conspiracy theories, shady characters and a host of unreliable witnesses. How do you separate fact from fiction and solve a crime when elderly, scared and confused people are the only link?
We hear the story from the police point of view but also get to know Peter and Fiona on a personal level too, both have their own struggles to deal with.
Twisted Truth is beautifully written, with an intriguing and complex plot which knits together seamlessly. As well as crime lovers the book will appeal to anyone who likes a whodunnit. I had my suspicions from the start but changed my mind several times as the storyline twists and turns
The characters are believable, flawed and interesting, I loved the fact that Gladys and Dick were featured because they were firm favourites of mine from another book in the series (Who Killed Vivien Morse ) and they provided some refreshingly humourous moments.
As a writer myself I tend to say nothing if I feel that I can't leave a glowing review. But in the case of Diana J Febry's Rural Detective Mystery series, frustration leads me to what I hope will be received in the way it is intended, as constructive criticism. I've read several books in this series and whilst I love the plots, the wonky punctuation and stilted dialogue have brought me to the point where I'm honestly not sure if I can read another one. I often find it hard to know who is speaking because with few exceptions, the characters seen to talk in a style of dialogue reminiscent of Conan Doyle's famous detective, with few of the verbal 'tics ' that we all have. The preponderance of "he said/she said"s after almost every line of dialogue almost meant that I didn't finish this book.
I feel that the author needs a fellow writer to act as a Beta Reader to iron out the punctuation issues. Do a word search for the word 'said' or the phrase 'he said', 'she said ' and then get rid of 75%! :-)
I do not give this advice lightly or for any reason other than wanting to help a fellow writer improve . I would have been glad of similar advice when I started out, and in fact I found peer reviews during the creative writing course to be invaluable for picking up areas in which I needed to improve!
I love the characters, the settings, and the plots.... but the execution of them lets the stories down.
Another boring fluff piece for the local rag put Megan on the trail of the story of a lifetime, or at least that was the promise. The idea was to rejuvenate the image of a nursing home, but the staff weren't the only ones to know of her upcoming visit. Through deception and carefully planned timing, suggestions of foul play are handed to her. Implications of a covered up crime involving people of such standing that the messenger feared there were few places he could turn. The seed of corruption runs deep, and there are those who would do anything to keep their secrets buried. Megan is determined to uncover the truth, but she's going to need help, not only to uncover the mystery, but also to stay alive.
Twisted Truth by Diana J Febry is a gripping murder mystery that will keep you on your toes. Subplots and events really add to the feel you are part of the setting. Diversions, red herrings, hints, cover ups, and fabricated reports all add to the engagement, drawing you in, making you want to piece together what really happened, is everything as it seems, an innocent accident, or is someone covering up the truth for their own gains? And if so, what exactly are they hiding. Well written, captivating , with well-developed characters, this is a murder mystery you won't soon forget.
This book reunites the readers with DCI Peter Hatherall and DI Fiona Wiliams as they try to solve a puzzling case.
With Twisted Truth, Diana J. Febry has once again created a thrilling British mystery with expertly woven plot lines. It is a compelling read, drawing you close to DCI Hatherall and DI Wiliams as they proceed with their investigation. Diana J. Febry paints a clear picture of the main characters' mindsets while the story evolves. I was again drawn close to Peter and Fiona and – enjoyed deeper insights in some bizarre characters. They are of sufficient depth, believable with their flaws and virtues. The story mainly focusses on journalist Megan Roach, her having her own ways, and the situations she is getting herself in. Even if I would have made different choices, I just had to keep my fingers crossed for her. The story is an expertly woven combination of British mystery and human behaviour, and has a wonderful flow; it was easy to get hooked.
This is a book for you if you like (British) mysteries with thorough investigation, calm and impressive storytelling, as well as complex and believable characters.
The excellent fifth book in the Peter Hatherall Mystery series!
This is the second book I’ve read by this author. Both were about the policeman Peter Hatherall. Both had a very good mystery I was really enjoying and suddenly both books stop and the mystery was resolved in a few pages, but almost like a reviewer was telling you the ending— the storyteller and telling was gone! It was like suddenly the author realized she had completed her required number of pages or more like she had reached the end of the number of pages allotted and had to tie the ends up. This happened with the first book in the series and I thought maybe she was a new author and since most of the book kept my attention, I gave another one in the series a chance, only to have it happen again. It gives the reader a very disjointed feeling, and leaves you dangling. I will NOT put my time into another of her stories to be disrespected by her strange endings. Awful feeling
I enjoyed the novel. It was interesting how the author steered the story in a different way from other Peter Hatherall Mystery's. Several times the reader (me) was led to believe the guilt of one man, though I really did think it was the mother, because she was so thoroughly unlikable. Several twists later I was really surprised at the end. The first person account of the journalist is believable, though I didn't like that she was wishy-washy for most of the book. The plot took her to great lengths of instability because of her own actions. I kept wanting to shout at her. Really? That many pills? With alcohol? But being young might have had something to do with that. I was sorry to not learn any more about the journalist's own family saga. This could very easily have been a suspense with the strange dealings going on around the journalist. I continue to enjoy books by this author and recommend her novels.
I've now read all of the books in this series, and all of the books from this author. All of them were excellent, but this was my favorite. From the start I was asking questions alongside of Megan and also Peter. We spend a lot of time with Megan and I really grew to care for her as a character, which made not knowing who was framing her, and how far they were willing to go really intense. I suspected with the clout of the people she was looking into things were going to get dangerous and they did. I also sort of guessed who was doing the framing but I didn't guess they extent of who they were. This is a wonderfully tense, page-turner of a mystery. If you want to read it without reading the rest of the series you can as it is self-contained.
I love this series! Just like the previous Peter Hatherall mysteries, this book was impossible to put down. In Twisted Truth, we meet a young journalist, Megan, working toward her big break. When approached with information about a possible murder cover-up, she jumps into the investigation against her fiancé's better judgement. After she comes to the rescue of an elderly man being harassed by teens, strange events begin to happen which cause Megan to question her very sanity. Megan's troubled past comes back to haunt her, leading the reader into a mad chase for the truth. Highly recommended!
Out of the blue, something happens to a journalist, with troubling consequences. Then she gets a tip on deaths classified as accidental, with evidence they were really murders that have been covered up. Her life becomes chaotic, surreal, and overwhelming. She questions the loyalty of her friends, her family, her memories, and her own sanity. You will, too, as you turn the pages of this intimate look into her downward spiral as she valiantly tries to find the killers and put her life back together.
This is another excellent murder / mystery from an author who paints a great picture of English country life. The plot is always excellent but it is the characters I especially love. Peter Hatherfall is a good, solid police inspector, who uses brain rather than brawn to solve his cases. A young journalist - Megan, receives information a fatal car accident may not have been an accident. From that point, Megan's life spirals out of control as the author weaves an intricate web of lies and deceit that leaves the reader uncertain of the truth but desperate to turn the pages. Highly recommended!
YEARS ON I have been following this author for several years, as I like the genre she writes in -English police stories reminiscent of Midsomer Murders. Each book she has published is better than the one before and it’s a delight to see how she has matured as a writer both in creating her characters and in the storylines themselves. I loved the way the book centres on Megan and I bonded with her at the beginning – it brings a fresh twist to the storyline. I shall certainly buy every book this author writes in the future. Recommended.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is one of those tales that keeps you thinking, lots of twists along the way but ultimately a very cleverly written who done it. Importantly the style here is unique, a writer with her own very particular voice with the result that I felt at all times like I was reading something very fresh and new. Far too often books of this genre rely on tired old stereotypes, but Twisted Truth is as original as they come. I read this a couple of weeks ago but it is still fresh in my mind. Happy to recommend this to book lovers. Great book loved it.
Plot was interesting and deceptive, leading the reader astray throughout. However, I found the ending convoluted and hurried - the explanation for all that was done murky at best. If course, it was supposed to be the reasoning of a delusional mind .....still, it did not suit me. Added to this was my frustration with the journalist. It could just be me, but for the logical, deductive person she was supposed to be, she was entirely too gullible and needy.
Twisted Truth is a suspenseful detective story which will keep you guessing until the last page. Characters are well-crafted with interesting pasts reflected in their present behaviours, which also adds to the layer of possible suspects, but never beyond the point of believability. This is the second of Diana Febry's novels I've read, and she seems to be an expert in crafting top quality murder mysteries.
Having read Febry's other books, I have to say I'm a big fan of this one. The story starts out with just the whispers of a mystery before it delves deeper and deeper until you're completely unsure what's true and what's not. I love that it's told just as much from the police's POV as the other people involved. It was truly a page turner and I loved every bit of it! Recommended for anyone looking for a good mystery!
A Pagan wedding, a mysterious hooded stranger and a young journalist hungry for a good story gel together to make this a wonderful page-turner not unlike ‘Midsomer Murders’. The story is tightly knitted, leaving the reader guessing until the last chapter, as detectives try to fathom who’s behind the countryside crimes. A very relaxing & enjoyable read, which left me in no doubt that I shall be reading more by this very talented author.
Longer than previous books, but needed to be with a lot of loose strings that do end into one. I found myself doing a search on various character names to refresh my old brain cells who some of the characters were, but I got through it.
Not a big surprise as to who would be shown to be bad at the end. Wish they would have given more of a closure to Megan since she was more of the story than anyone else, but still a good one.
'Twisted Truth' by Diana J Febry is a cleverly crafted "who dunnit". I loved the fact that, Ms. Febry's characters were able to make me feel angst, which in turn encouraged me to want to play detective & see if I could solve the case, before the answer was revealed.
I believe 'Twisted Truth' will appeal to readers who love crime books or thrillers.
An excellent mystery suspense novel that should turn into a British TV series. The storyline is intense and with every step and turn of the page you find out more and more in a way that makes you realize you’ve been holding your breath this entire time. This story is so rich in details and deep characters that it’ll make your head spin.
I've loved all the Peter Hatherall Mysteries. If you enjoy a detailed mystery with lots of voices and twists, deeply drawn characters, you'll love Twisted Truth. This one kept me turning the pages all the way through.
This book left me very frustrated. So many characters hard to keep up unless you read the whole book at once which was not one of those can’t put down books. I’m still not sure what all happened here. No conclusions for me.
This series is excellent! Another intricate situation, involving coverup by police and government. It is extremely complicated and not completely resolved until final police standoff!
