The Dossiers of Asset 108 #4

Cascading Error: Critical

Rate this book
A madman, broken by otherworldly horror. A cult that worships the Names of Lamentation. A twisted cosmology bent on the ending of all things... For some, death is but a doorway.

Following a trail of plague corpses and inhuman wretches, suave cyber-badass Michael Bishop seduces and quips his way to Istanbul. Once there, he discovers an old foe who has crafted himself a new face.

Amir Cadavas: a depraved occultist and Class I Jerk.

Michael has dealt with this clown before- only six years earlier, in the Yucatan. There, Amir sadistically slaughted most of his cadre. Michael responded by murdering the cultist to death.

Now, in Istanbul, the psychopath has returned.

Soon, a beartrap of deceit springs around Michael, plummetting him and his cadre into the depths of human madness. They struggle against masked worshippers of inhuman darkness; they wander through misbegotten temples and rituals of blood. All this as they are mocked and toyed with by Amir.

Yet the web of schemes quickly becomes apparent. Bishop has to make choices, choices which will shape the future of our world. If he fails...

An ancient city will rise. The time of man will come to an end.

The Equation is not complete.

JM Guillen was just an average Joe when he worked at a Necromancy factory in 2018. After his job was outsourced to Mexico, he has been driven irrevocably mad and gifted with strange, terrible power.

Today he spends his time creating sentient velociraptors in his secret lair and summoning fell powers best left alone. His goal of absolute world domination is almost within his grasp. Soon, nothing will stop him.

Occasionally, he writes.

I loved it as usual with the Asset 108 books, but this one needs a little more polish. I happen to know JM Guillen is working on just that for the whole series, so I am not going to fuss much over it or get nit-picky about it like I might otherwise! He's a good egg and I love his sense of humor and the dark yet hopeful message that I find in his books thus far. The character of Michael Bishop speaks to me in a way that only a wild and untamed soul can. I have spent my life restrained by rules that I felt hindered me from doing my best job and that have kept me from being my best self, and reading about characters like "Bitch-op"(a friendly nickname given to him by one of his cadre members) who get to sometimes lead with their heart and creativity and still get to get up and do their jobs without getting told they are a total failure and hidden away in a hole behind three doors and two walls frees my soul vicariously. His ability to function on the fly is totally reminiscent of the MacGyver style of making things work with whatever you have on hand in whatever situation you may find yourself. But unlike MacGyver, he really needs his cadre, thus also showing how no one human being can truly function in isolation without his or her "family" unit- be it a work family or a home family or some sort of unique hybrid. People need people and all have their place in the ebb and flow of life.

The 4th book in the series which basically includes anyone and anything (including carried-overs from other books in the author's main series) all brought to gather, killing a major characters which sets the story in motion for the series' lead character, with all types of things and people added as well into a plot that is meant as The Stars Are Right and Those Damn Great Old Ones Are Returning but different names then the typical Cthulhu Mythos one and I think a sink gets mentioned at some point, but it's not in the kitchen.

The latest of Michael Bishop’s adventures pits our Facility Asset and his cadre against yet another Irrational plot against our fragile dimension. This time, the chase takes them into the catacombs beneath the Vatican itself. From there, the cadre of old faces from the first book and new ones from more recent entries counter a multi-pronged irrational assault. A series of dungeon crawls fallows, punctuated by the sort of banter RPG players will be familiar with as their characters try out new equipment and techniques to forge ahead.

Bishop must also accustom himself on the fly to a new role and new responsibilities, while dealing with a continued eldritch influence on his person. An added turn came in the investigation of the irrational plot behind the scenes and the atrocities they will commit in service of their ends.

It’s also becoming clear that the erstwhile cadre is gathering in their civilian roles and forming bonds that may continue into active duty.
