I prepared myself for a disconnected narrative and confusing historical account of the Black Forces in Southeastern Ukraine. What I found was an itemised account of military tactics and the political events surrounding the life of Maria Nikiforova, specifically, and the history of Anarchist Ukraine in general.
This interpretation might be a reflection of my own reading style and shouldn't influence how others interact with the book.
One overall problem I have with the book is that the cover clearly states that the focus will be on Maria Nikiforova. Instead, the book, especially in the latter half, is primarily centred on the role/legacy of Nestor Makhno. Which I found to be somewhat distracting. Besides this, I would offer a slight amendment to its subtitle, 'The Odyssey of an Anarchist Through Ukraine', to 'An Odyssey through Anarchist Ukraine'.
I contend that this book should be on any shelf dedicated to Anarchist history.
