The vibe was completely off in the opening chapters of Little Christmas Elf, like showing up to a party where everybody already has inside jokes. Stick with it, though. Eileen Curran slowly peels back the weirdness, and by the time you reach the scene in the flooded basement, you're all in. It's messy and the worldbuilding takes real effort, but the payoff is worth the confusion. For readers who like to work for it. Pass if you want to be eased in.
I walked into Little Christmas Elf looking for a story, but Eileen Curran gave me a ruthless dissection of how economic leverage dictates moral choices.
