Don't know really how to review this book - on one level it's an on-off romance but the time frame moves into a different dimension & there were bits which didn't ring true. Relegated by one star on re-read.
Sometimes people take a journey toward the future, but not before they revisit what haunts them from their past.
Halfway Home plunks (the devil may care) Casey Day into the path of (the lives to work) Savannah Burns. Savannah is a. k. a. the closer in her career as a high powered D. C. lobbyist. Casey is a pink haired rebel rollerskating through every state to raise money. She aged out of foster care without anyone to help her. She wants to raise funds for a program to help foster kids when they enter the system and assigns them pen pals.
Their lives collide and their hearts find true joy, until they don't. Anna Cove deals with several interlocking issues in Halfway Home. Within a joyful lesbian romance, there are serious social concerns. Sometimes the same things that bring people into relationships can then force them to confront long buried pain or breaks them apart. This is a short novel and long stretches of time are condensed in the plot. The pace seemed overly rushed to me, but I found the story very involving. Though it might have been better as a longer book, I believe that it is an impressive work of lesfic.
After the first chapter I thought this impulse download might turn out to be a reasonable read, unfortunately it went downhill very quickly. I started thinking Savannah might be interesting but by chapter five I really didn’t understand her anymore and just couldn’t be bothered to continue. This is clearly my fault as everybody else seems to love the book, still nothing ventured nothing gained.
Savannah is a high-powered DC lobbyist on the side of the good guys. Feeling not totally happy in her job and less than happy in her relationship, she literally runs into Casey, a free-spirited pink-haired quirky girl on roller skates who is just passing through on her 50-state tour project. An initial attraction continues to grow through a series of unanticipated meetings, but Savannah must first contend with her existing relationship and then with an even bigger problem that threatens to tear apart everything she's has and could have with Casey.
A well-plotted book, with a few flaws, mostly having to do with minor credibility issues (how Casey was able to check into a hotel room reserved in Savannah's name; how Casey was able to have a cell phone with virtually no income), you can't help rooting for these two main characters, each of whom grows quite a bit through the course of this solid romance.
I received an advanced review copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Foster children. Addiction. Two issues that affect the lives of many people in the US today. This F/F romance takes them both on, and does a very good job illuminating both.
Both main characters are activists but in very different ways. One is skating in every state to raise money to help foster kids. The other works for an agency which is fighting for legislation to combat the illicit use of drugs, including the growing national opiod addiction. They meet; chemistry happens. The drug activitst helps the skater to find a way to dramatically increase the efficiency of the latter's fundraiding.
Everything's going great until... well, no spoilers. But this story is well worth a read. Great work by Anna Cove!
Thank you so much for writing this I also agree it needs to be talked about more personally I have struggled with drug and alcohol addiction for 25+ years I can say I am clean and sober for four years and the people that have forgiven me and the work I put into gaining back their trust to read about it other people overcoming it thank you it is a real struggle in our society today and the stigmatism of it is uncalled for specially today somebody knows somebody who has died or has been affected by drug and alcohol addiction and to be judgmental and better than what does that help anybody but thank you for being brave and writing about this hard subject I applaud you
This book takes on some very serious issues without dwelling completely on them and without shorting them. It’s a great depiction of how addiction can taint everything from the life of the addict to the people that love them. Underneath all of that is sweet love story that you will be very glad you read. I have read all of her books and liked all of them, but this is the one that will stick with you for a long time after you finish reading it. Read it, you won’t be sorry.
Casey and Savannah are both people with issues. The story takes us on a journey with some heavy items. But also with a very big declaration of love. And a epiloge! Casey was such a great person, Savannah however i had some issues with and that is the reason i could not give this book a higher rating. I got this book from the author for my honest review.
This story was absolutely astonishing. You managed to cover two controversial topics, and it was done with such finesse that I couldn’t help but become totally invested in the reading of this book. The characters, so opposite of each other made this story even more interesting. Great writing.
The characters are easy to love and the story line is great. Something I think most of us can relate to one way or another because we all know someone struggling with addiction.
I really liked Anna's way of writing dialogue...snappy, quirky, fun. The relationship between Sav and Casey was real and true. It wasn't smooth going but what relationship in real life is? I look forward to reading more of Anna's books.
Quiet romance against a backdrop of drug addiction. The story arc also delves into some of the weaknesses and limitations of the foster care system. After a fair amount of angst on both sides the main characters finally achieve their HEA.
Out of the five stories, this one was the best. Very realistic as far as the separation. Would have liked more hospital scenes but the story was well paced. Some comedy, some sadness a well written story. Highly recommended.
Yet another example of how talented Anna Cove is this book holds you from start to finish Sav and Casey's story is a tale that leaves you thinking about the world we live in read it and see what I mean
I really like Anna's Cove style and this book is so beautiful. The story is so different and unique and I love how the characters are changing slowly in the story. Loveable characters and a book that I couldnt put down. Just Excellent
