Rembrandts Portret van een jonge man

Toen het oog van kunsthandelaar Jan Six op het Portret van een jonge man in een veilingcatalogus van Christie’s viel, wist hij meteen dat het niet een werk uit ‘the circle of Rembrandt’ was, maar dat de meester het zélf had geschilderd. De laatste keer dat een totaal onbekende Rembrandt werd ontdekt was in 1974 (De doop van de eunuch). Hoe overtuig je de wereld van zo’n ontdekking? Bestaat er zoiets als een absoluut oog? Hoe bijzonder is dit schilderij in verhouding tot het overige werk van Nederlands beroemdste schilder? Jan Six neemt in dit boek de lezer op meeslepende en erudiete wijze mee in die spannende ontdekkingstocht en jongensdroom die werkelijkheid werd en laat het Portret van een jonge man zien door het oog van zijn ontdekker.

Jan Six, ook wel Jan Six XI, (1978) studeerde kunstgeschiedenis en werkte bij veilinghuis Sotheby’s in Londen en Amsterdam, als hoofd van de afdeling Oude Meesters. Sinds 2008 is hij kunsthandelaar en heeft hij zijn eigen galerie, gespecialiseerd in schilderijen en tekeningen van Hollandse en Vlaamse Oude Meesters.

Jan Six, also known as Jan Six XI, (1978) studied art history and worked at Sotheby’s London and in Amsterdam as head of the Old Master Paintings department. Since 2008 he operates as an art dealer and runs his own gallery, specialised in Dutch and Flemish Old Master Paintings and Drawings.

Normaal ben ik niet zo geïnteresseerd in boeken over Rembrandt, omdat het vaak algemene overzichten zijn van steeds dezelfde wereldberoemde kunstwerken. Dit boek is echter anders: het is niet het verhaal van Rembrandt maar het verhaal van een onderzoeksproces. Jan Six schenkt ons hiermee een uniek perspectief op de identificatie van een kunstwerk, en daarmee ook een bijzondere invalshoek op het werk van Rembrandt.

The back cover promises this account of how Jan Six discovered a new portrait by Rembrandt to be a "thriller": sadly this is not the case. Six's writing is dull and bland, and there is simply no tension whatsoever present, except at the very beginning, when Six spots the painting at Christie's - it's ironic that exactly that turns out to be a false account, but more on that later.

If you've read anything about Rembrandt by Ernst Van de Wetering - the leading Rembrandt expert - there won't be that much to learn from this book about the practice of how 17th century paintings are ascribed to a painter, or on Rembrandt's painterly processes. If you're new to reading Rembrandt scholarship, this is an easy and quick crash course though. So, your milage may vary.

That said, the discovery of a new Rembrandt is of interest to any serious Rembrandt enthousiast, and as a way to acquaint oneself with this new portrait the little booklet - it can be read easily in under 2 hours - serves its purpose fairly well. There's plenty of illustrations, and Six includes a good share of paintings by other painters for comparison. The few pages on the restauration, including pictures of the different stages, are the highlight of this booklet.

I would have liked a few more close-ups - it would have suited a publication dedicated to just one painting. All and all, I think this would have benifited tremendously from more detail and depth, but in that case it would have been harder to market and its price would've been steeper. Instead the publisher and Six opted for the easy money.

A final remark: the cultural significance of this book most of all lies in its sociological value - it is to say, in its relevance as an example of how our society works. Today's Jan Six wouldn't have had the same stature were it not for inherited money and status, him being Jan Six XI, a direct descendant of Jan Six I, who was an heir to a wealthy cloth merchant, and became a magistrat of Amsterdam, and obviously very rich.. Jan Six was an art collector himself, and a friend of Rembrandt - who portrayed him in 1654 in an magnificent portrait that is still owned by the Six family. Some might think it poetic that a descendant of Jan Six I discovers a new Rembrandt, but I think it tragic.

It's all the more tragic as reports in the Dutch press uncovered that Six XI was not fully truthful in this book about how he managed to buy the painting, and that there are serious indications that he double crossed a partner to do so - to the extent that Van de Wetering has publicly called for Six to share the ownership with his partner, and a few days later even denounced his friendship with Six, calling him a liar. I'm with Van de Wetering on this one, as he has no money or reputation at stake at all in this feud between former business partners.

Dit boek las ik op dezelfde dag dat ik Rembrandts nieuw ontdekte Portret van een jonge man zag in de Hermitage Amsterdam, waar het een maandje tentoongesteld wordt. Kunsthandelaar en eigenaar Jan Six licht hierin toe hoe hij tot zijn toeschrijving gekomen is. Het draait dan ook vooral om de schilderstechniek en om de context. Zonder kennersoog gaat het nog steeds niet. Dit boek gaat niet alleen over Rembrandt, maar biedt ook een inkijk in de wereld van de professionele kunstkenner. Dat maakt het tot een bijzonder document.

More a longread than a book, a lot of padding (empty pages), but also a lot of images; x-ray and UV pictures, and pictures of many other relevant Rembrandt and contemoraries paintings.

Convincing case that indeed it is a Rembrandt. Especially the painting technique of the collar of the young man (conveniently only in fashion around 1634, when Flinck or Bol were not accomplished enough).

Review in English because that’s the language the University library had it in.

Ik geloof dat ik al te veel kunstprogramma’s zag waarin spanning en entertainment op een goede manier samengebracht worden om kunst te verkopen. Six probeerde dat ook, maar het komt toch voornamelijk over als een poging om zoveel mogelijk mensen ervan te overtuigen dat zijn vondst ‘klopt’.
Ik wil hem graag geloven en het is een vermakelijk boekje met vele foto’s en blikken achter de schermen, maar dit had evengoed in een YouTube-filmpje van een kwartier gekund.

Enjoyed learning about the techniques used to attribute this painting to Rembrandt and liked the story of the cloak and dagger secrecy before Yan Six acquired it. Would have liked to know whether the original owners or Christie’s had any recorded reaction after it was shown that they’d failed to identify the painter for the sale. It needed a little more context, I thought.

Aardig verslag van zijn vondst en interessant om te lezen waar je zoal naar kunt kijken.
Het zijn veel foto's maar die geven wel goed inzicht in alle verschillen.
