THE FUTURE AWAITS! It’s time for Yamada’s university entrance exams, and she’s super nervous! All her hard work is about to be put to the test. Will she get to follow her dreams and join Kase-san in Tokyo come spring?
Super sweet high school romance gets a warm and fuzzy denouement and a sexy send off. Except the series may continue into college. That feels unnecessary, but I'm totally on board with it.
This seems to be the last volume of the series, at least following the story in its chronological order. Both Yamada and Kase-san are at the university in Tokyo, away from parents and living alone, treading the path to adulthood. It is interesting to see the relationship maturing along with them, a pity that this volume was quite rushed.
I feel like this is such an underrated series. It's so cute. And very funny, especially whenever one is so flustered by the other. And this was so different. It was cute
This volume in transition, between the earlier school romance and whatever comes next, and I've really enjoyed it -- not only for more cute scenes of the two characters, but because of the promise and anticipation of the future. There's a flashback to an early memorable meeting, christmas gifts, exams, cherry-blossom viewing, moving, and Kase and Yamada taking their relationship to the next level; thematically, very much about milestones and hopeful futures, and it makes me really excited for more of them growing together. The art continues to be exuberantly cute and really delightful, and I'm extremely happy to be getting more of everything.
This entire series is...just *so* sweet. I really enjoyed seeing the girls interact, and how their relationship progressed. I think what I enjoyed the most is the casual style of storytelling; each chapter was like a small moment photographed in their lives; yes, the story was moving forward in time, but everything seemed to be made of small, meaningful moments. This is perfect for when you need something happy or easy to digest. This is technically the last in the series, however I did see on Amazon that a continuation is coming in the Spring!! I'm excited to see where they go from here.
A great return to form! I really liked this volume. The first two volumes were my favorite while the previous two were a mixed bag. This one is probably the 3rd best so far. WARNING: I GO INTO WAY TOO MUCH DETAIL OVER THIS SORRY.
Art: It’s still very cute, expressive, and with a personal flair. The art in this series really makes it for me- it’s had a charm and a nice warm feeling while also adding some detail. I feel like the backgrounds are becoming more detailed and the drawings are cleaner. I also love the outfit designs. This takes place over multiple seasons so we get to see some different get ups for our characters.
Character: I’m a sucker for Yamada’s arc. I really think she’s grown during the series. The romance isn’t the only thing about her. I liked seeing her adjust to life in the city. I think the character moments really make the volume and the series as a whole. I’ll go more into that later. Kase is alright. She’s not as fleshed out here, oddly, which does take a bit away from it being perfect (but still 5 stars for me). She does refrain from being just a standard love interest at least. Also Mikawacchi is here!
Story: This one is more of a transition and I guess a finale, but it’s not too story heavy. It’s just a a lot of fluff, but there’s still substance. The ladies are finishing high school and transitioning to college. I like that the series is going to follow them in college, rather than just end it there. And the college part is a big pay off, it’s been being built up for a while, and seeing it all conclude is very nice. Go Yamada! I am very much looking forward to the next volume, as the high school formula felt a bit limited. Now the character moments. I think Takashima is quite good at writing these characters simply but effectively thorough character moments. Like further advancements in Kase and Yamadas relationship. Or just little things like Yamada being Yamada. One really little moment I am going to over praise is when Kase and Yamada stop at a convience store in Tokyo. Yamada remarks that she never really got to do stuff like that at high school. It’s so stupidly simple but it just works. It shows that they’re growing up and adjusting to a new kinda life already.
So yeah I think Kase-San is definetly worth checking out. Yuri tends to be a mixed bag especially the more fanservicey ones. This one however I approve!
Kase-san and Morning Glories was originally published as a one-shot - I purchased it thinking that's all there is to it. I found out about the continuation of it before I actually got around to reading my copy. At that stage, I was really torn about what to do: I can't stand reading incomplete series, but the following volumes were quite pricey. I had half a mind to get rid of my copy again but eventually settled for giving it a try first - after all, it might just be good enough as the one-shot I thought it was.
Volume one was adorable - it didn't take much more convincing and I was up and ordering the rest of the series. Having read it as a whole now, I can say that each volume is equally beautiful and that I have absolutely no regrets for investing in this rather pricey series - it was worth every cent!
The main characters Kase and Yamada are quite different from one another, yet they make such a harmonious couple that won my reader's heart in an instant. Kase is athletic and keeps a feminine side despite being very much a tomboy. She is very protective of Yamada but is surprisingly generous and empathetic. Yamada can only be described as adorable and a bit of a goofball - she's had me laughing many a time with how much joy she takes out the simple things. She's definitely the naive and clumsy type but she also manages to stand her ground and make her own decisions when something is important to her.
As a couple, despite their differences, they couldn't have been better matched. Kase seems very much aware of her sexuality while Yamada only seems to understand hers gradually. It's clear from the start, though, that Yamada is in awe with Kase and the author did such a great job with how their relationship unfolds. It just has such a warm and sweet feeling to it! Although Yamada occasionally points out that they are both girls, the story never treats this as an 'Oh my god!' realisation. I feel as though a lot of stories with LGBT characters use it more as a trope for extra drama, but Kase-san and the Morning Glories is plain and simple an adorable story about two people in love who both happen to be girls.
I also have to mention how cute the art is. I really appreciated Takashima Hiromi art style, be it the cute and dainty girls or the hilarious expressions the characters wore during comedic moments. I thought it was a shame that, apart from a mid-aged teacher, there was never a proper drawing of a male character. It's another thing I noticed in LGBT focused stories; characters from the opposite gender are either non-present, unimportant or just nasty - I find that both a shame and unrealistic. But anyway, moving on, as far as art goes, I would love to see more of it!
As it happens, there is a sequel called Kase-san and Yamada. As much as I loved the original series, I am yet undecided on whether I will read the sequel. Takashima Hiromi seems to be one of those authors who manage to dish out a volume every 1.5 years. Depending on the length of the series, I might honestly not have the patience for this to conclude. That being said, Kase-san and Morning Glories is an episodic kind of story with a slice of life feel to it, which makes it an easy series to stop and consider concluded at any given time.
Very pleased with what I thought (sadly) was going to be the final volume. These two characters have really grown on me. They’re so likable and their relationship has been emotionally engaging to follow. I was totally crying during the last couple pages which I thought was going to be the conclusion to the series. If that somehow happens to be the ending it’d be perfect in my opinion. One thing I really loved is how both characters would talk about and promise a future together.
Big thanks to Hiromi Takashima for creating such a beautiful story with wonderful characters. At one point I stopped and started thinking about famous duos/pairings in the world of fiction. Kase-San and Yamada would totally be in my “top 3” if I was going to create a list.
I was so HAPPY when I saw the “ad” at the very end promoting future stories following these two characters into their adulthood.
Also, the author’s afterword totally made me shed a tear. It’s so cool to see an creator emotionally acknowledging her own characters.
It’s going to be tough waiting for the next volume...but I’ll be very excited when it does come out!
Oh how I have loved this series. So adorable. I feel it should get more recognition. And it got a wee sexy there toward the end but then right back to fluff cuteness. One of my favorite parts in this particular volume was the couple of pages with Yamada wondering about the hotel, why the "rest" vs "stay" and her innocent ponderings on it, while Kase-san was O_O.
While I think this is a perfect ending to the series... I am kind of glad that they decided to make a new series with these two in college. They're precious and I need more.
It is incredible how all these little vignettes into this couple's first year together can build such a connection that I ended up busting out crying multiple times in this (feels) short volume! I really care about these fictional people and their wee relationship!
I have praised the visual clarity of the series before, but, there is a moment in this where we wordlessly see the character try to hide their feelings and then see her teary face, and it was fucking heart-rending!
This is a beginning, yes, but also serves as a satisfying conclusion. Even though, for me, it felt like it went too fast.
Alright. I have finished the og Kase-San manga and I can definitely say: this is so freaking adorable and cozy. I adore it. ♥ now. will I continue on with the spin-off? probably not. maybe eventually but I am pretty content at the end of this volume and don't feel any need or want to. This series is nothing extraordinary and I feel like the chances of me growing tired of the same old would dampen how much I like this og series.
This was such a good-feel and precious manga series and I am very happy to have read it.
4 stars. The girls are finally in university and they take their relationship to the next level. I loved this volume so much and it is easily my favorite in the series so far. The growth in Yamada has been wonderful to see and the romance between her and Kase is just the most precious thing ever. I’m excited for their university adventures.
Just as cute as previous volumes, but we really see Yamada start to come out of her shell in this one, thankfully. I was starting to get frustrated with her lack of growth, but this volume helps make up for that.
This was kind of an epilogue rather than a full final volume, but it was okay!!! Not much happened but at least we didn't get the disgusting bits. Glad to see that my girls are alive, well and finally free of their author!!!!!! Go thrive girls!!!!!!!
This was a satisfying ending to the manga, and a great set-up to the new Kase-san and Yamada series. I love how the two communicate their feelings. There's still messy miscommunication, but that's okay. Yamada is cute enough for me to forgive them. ;)
A very beautiful story about two high school girls that fall in love with each other and start dating. This manga manages to talk about a lot of worrisome issues that come with being in a lesbian relationship and how the characters work through them. Very worth the read!
the fifth and last volume - that is more an epilogue than a full closing circle - was pretty uneventful but i can see it serves more as a transition to the life they're going to live in tokyo as young adults and it does gently just as the previous moments of them together
“ever since we met… kase-san has been like a sunflower.”
“ever since that time before summer break in eleventh grade, I’ve been swearing it on the morning glories, the sunflowers, the hydrangeas, the tulips, on all the flowers at school.”
